Your Current TOP 10 Aircraft

Old:

New:

  1. Aerosoft Bombadier CRJ
  2. Flysimware Cessna C414
  3. Aerosoft DHC-6 Twin Otter
  4. Fenix Airbus 320
  5. SWS Kodiak 100

Milviz Cessna 310R out of Top 5 even if a great plane. But if I want to fly VFR I go with the C414 currently.

Yeah I totally see your point. But still think it will make a more interesting and closer battle. I mean if more people mention plane X, then it will rise up. It’s about your favourite on a personal level, but globally it’s about the groups favourite. It is hard to say how it will pan out but I’m sure the same planes will be at the top regardless of points or no points. But it will make it a bit easier for a new plane to come up without having such big margins between positions after time. Right now it looks like the 414 will never get dethroned, right? And rightly so but if people still keep listing it, then it will still be there also.

As I say it’s up to you how many you list but even if you don’t want a “lesser” plane to have the same reward as your top, in the end it doesn’t matter if you did list it also, because what’s gonna be interesting is if others also mention your lesser plane. If they do then globally it deserves to have its position. If they don’t then it will find its natural rank and that will also be justified at the end of the day.

EDIT: also as it’s still “ONLY” 10 aircraft then they really all should deserve a mention otherwise what are they doing in your thoughts? If it’s not a fun plane that you enjoy - out of the I guess ~100+ options you may have in your hangar - then it should not even be considered to be listed. There are many aircraft that you’d never list so why make one that you WOULD list not appear just because you want a different plane to get double points?

You’re a bit all over the place there with the developers for the 40th edition stuff. Asobo/Blackbird Beaver should be Microsoft/Blackbird, the Aeroplane Heaven DC-3 should be Microsoft/Aeroplane Heaven, and the A310 is fine I guess. Or maybe it should be the people who made it first, because these are all basically just Microsoft commissioned planes so Blackbird/Microsoft Beaver, Aeroplane Heaven/Microsoft DC-3 and IniBuilds/Microsoft A310. Or maybe just drop the Microsoft bit altogether :person_shrugging:, like Microsoft are basically just the publisher/producer at the end of the day not day. But as it stands you have three different formats for the three different 40th anniversary planes in your top 10 weekly list which makes my left eye twitch a bit

I like the change and to have it such that there is more movement in the list. In case option C is still on the table that would be my personal preference. It seems like a good way to be able to point out one plane above all the others without complicating the maths too much. But it’s entirely your call, I’ll make sure to participate regularly either way.

I believe a reasonably well-made Beaver would have sky-rocketed in the list either way. For my part I consider the Beaver to be part payware and part freeware. I would massively have preferred a full payware version, or better yet a freeware on the level of complexity of the product we got (being all that 95% of simmers would want), with a payware option for those of us who want the best Beaver that technology will allow. If another developer creates an even better Beaver I’ll get it for sure. In the meantime the Blackbird Beaver will certainly enter my top 5, but I’ll adjust it to be a bit further down the list than my original idea to account for it being a little bit less complete than what we might have gotten if Microsoft hadn’t commissioned it.

Actually the proper names which I have taken my naming from is in the folder names for each as below. Some of which say Asobo and some MS. Make of that what you will. I added the dev names as found it important so the only one I got “wrong” according to that is the Airbus I suppose which should also be MS but yeah I take your point. Thing is there is inconsistency in my other entries too so I might tidy it up for next year lol

I also will vote once or twice per year only. This means I have to come back each month and say “same again”? Can’t this be automatic? Like for the next 6 months?

You are doing an amazing job with this and maintaining the Hours & Hobbs database. You’re not getting paid enough imho. :grinning:

btw. Once a month reset is perfect for the charts imho, (it is a chart after all), if folks cannot take the time to type an updated list each month then the aircraft they voted for should indeed lose a vote for that month, that is how charts work.

The only downside I see is if a great new plane gets released just before the end of the month, I guess in that case though, votes for that aircraft would still be coming in hot at the beginning of the following month.

Only if you want it to count for the month. If that doesn’t bother you then your 1 or 2 updates a year are already in the “all-time” results which is still going to have weight to it, perhaps even more so — as that’s the grand totals. Either way your vote is important.

I can’t think of a way to automate re-application every month for 6 months without me tracking the last entry for every user for every plane and cross checking every month when each one needs to come off. That would be a nightmare for me. I’d rather just have one list like this whole thing started as. I only started doing the weekly top 10 because of demand for it. Basically I’m transferring that principal to a month rather than a week so if you’re not coming back every week now, the end result will be exactly the same for you and your planes’ positions in the all time list as it is now.

Hah yeah it’s all a bit of a mess in that Official content folder really. I still find it a bit weird calling MilViz ‘Blackbird’ as well.

So the new format with a top 10 will start in January?

I may update my list before the end of the year as I’ve been flying the DC3 quite a bit and liking it a lot.

Thanks for all the hard work on this @Baracus250!

Yep that’s the plan. Just checked the calendar and rather luckily / coincidentally the 1st of January is a Sunday.

So I will publish the final result of 2022 that morning (hangover permitting!) and the new system will start for any contributions after that point!

Thank you too — for your regular involvement here and your support and interest. Let’s see how things shape up next year and on!

Yeah probably not going to bother doing monthly updates either, I suspect it will turn into a “what is the latest fad” survey, which is useful in it’s own right of course.

Not sure how to get around that without doing something overly complicated like have previous months register at reduced points, which will likely not be worth the time and effort.

I will probably leave it to the crowd who are forever excited by the latest shiney thing  we will see .

I don’t see it that way. If anything it will be less of “fads” than the currently weekly reset which can also be quite random depending on who / how many posts I get in a single week.

We are still going to feature the All-time top as the main chart. Supplemented by the Months votes instead of Weeks. Which given 4x longer to settle will be a more accurate picture of the current top offerings and give newer releases more visibility (which is the main failing of the current system - takes too long for a great plane to get to the top).

So, as an addendum to my plans how about this:

The update post will have the All-time Top 10 chart directly in the page, followed by the monthly Top 20 and then as already mentioned ALL data in the PDF download available for those that want to see everything. The PDF will get an extra page each month but the front page will be the Lifetime chart.

I don’t mind the monthly voting and whoever feels strongly enough about their picks can come back every month or let it go. Their choice.

Like others, though, I feel that the top choice (or the first three) should have higher points than the rest. We all know that we will have favorites within that list of up to 10, so they should be represented as such in the voting.

That was sort of my option B:

  • Option B: top 4 get 5-2pts then 1 each BUT ranking is by vote order unless tied. Basically swapping the importance we have in 2022

But still I’d only use points to distinguish a tie (instead of the youngest plane in a tie). Can’t do both those things and I like the youngest plane idea better as it gives newcomers a nice unforced boost. I expect there will be a few ties all the way down the field so we will see that in action quite a lot

There are so many different ways it could be done. The more you look the more complex it gets hence my idea to keep it simple

Just to show the difference that taking the current top 10 and changing the ranking to votes instead of points order, it comes out roughly the same — exactly the same list of planes with a couple swapped order. That’s all. So once all is said and done, the herd will speak and that will define the order. Your own preference once filtered and averaged by more votes over time barely matters, sorry to say  Stats are Stats

I agree, especially as more and more addons are coming out. Some of the best developers have not even released their full complement of aircraft yet. I’m thinking FSLabs, PMDG, Aerosoft and A2A for GA. Although I have to admit that MSFS 2020 has brought a whole new crop of developers that I had never heard of with excellent aircraft. And others have stepped up their game, thank you Just Flight and Carenado. It’s a bright future for flight simming after so many years of slow growth and stagnation. And VR is going to be the next game changer.

As a newcomer to MSFS 2020 I’ve being blown away by the scenery, flight dynamics, variety and quality of addons. Thus I have installed so many addons (freeware and payware) and bought so many new peripherals and controllers, I wonder when I get to start enjoying this new simulator instead of reading manuals, learning and tweaking settings?

Haha, that’s part of the fun of this hobby for me! You’ve got to be a bit of a “fiddler” (I don’t mean the musical instrument obviously) to get the most out of it

I probably spend half my time just setting things up and trying new things out instead of just getting down to a regular flight. Then the other half troubleshooting this ÂŁ@!„ software. It’s a wonder I get any flight hours in at all!

Lol
exactly! And you’ve been using this simulator for awhile, as a newcomer I wonder what’s in store for me?!
