Yes, I am just using Chrome, not the app. I have a new-ish computer and I should install dropbox again. I don’t use it that much anymore, but it would be useful here.
I’m considering the Globe Swift a lot, can you speak to what makes it your favorite? I’m really looking for a taildragger with good handling, and the Swift sure looks lovely
New List
- Piper L-4 (Flight Replicas)
- Stearman (DC Designs)
- Bird Dog (BlackBox)
- Beech 18 (Asobo / Carenado)
- Spitfire LF IX (Flying Iron)
Old List
- Hawker Hunter (Dave Garwood)
- Stearman (DC Designs)
- Beech Staggerwing (Asobo / Carenado)
- Beech 18 (Asobo / Carenado)
- Cessna Bird Dog (Blackbox)
My favorite aircraft is the FlyingIron Spitfire, what a blast to fly (once you figure out how to control the beast) :).
Well firstly it fits my personal taste, I like vintage aircraft, prefer steam gauges, I tend to hand fly a lot of my flights, prefer VFR and do a lot of low and slow.
Secondly I have quite a lot of nice tail draggers already but the better ones are either:
- biplanes (such as the Stearman, Bucker Jungman and the Staggerwing)
- or big twins like the Twin beech and the 247D
- or high wing Cessna (c140/c170)
So, for me at least, the single engine, retractable gear, low wing, tail dragger configuration is something a bit different and fun.
Secondly the visuals are quite good and there are some nice options like engine volume control.
Mainly however it behaves well and feels “right” to me and there are no unexpected surprises in ground handling like you get with many tail draggers in game, it lands like a tail dragger should and is very well behaved on the ground.
Disclaimers
…I literally have no idea how historically accurate or “according to the book” the performance and flight model is, as it is not an aircraft I will ever fly in real life so do not care. It is probably correct but if those things bother you, you need to do your own research
… I also have no idea about compatibility with Vatsim or what ILS/AP/etc options are available, because I see this as a “toss around at low level and look at the scenery sort of thing” and never looked into that sort of stuff
… there are some minor teething issues with first release, mainly visual such as aileron weirdness hopefully picked up in the next patch
I’ve been reading this thread every once in a while and now I have finally decided to post my own top 5 to help my favorite aircraft rise in the charts.
1. Cessna 310R - MilViz
Best aircraft for me. I love each stage of flight when I’m in this thing. Landing it well took some practice at first because it drops fast when you pull the throttle all the way back during your flare, which can lead to some hard landings if you don’t smoothly reduce power. According to various real world pilots, this behavior is accurate and I believe it is due to the shape of the wings. I like using the PMS50 GTN 750 mod with this one. The product is considered complete but there is an upcoming service patch that should be released soon ™.
2. Quest Kodiak 100 - SimWorks Studio
This is my go to aircraft when I want to land on some grass strips in the middle of nowhere. I also like to explore mountains with this one. It’s able to clear Denali in Alaska and can also get up to see Everest, although Everest is a few thousand feet higher than the service ceiling. The Kodiak is excellent for exploration and I love the turbo engine sounds.
3. Cessna Citation CJ4 - Working Title
I like this one for anytime I want to go fast or high above the clouds. I usually whip up a flight plan on SimBrief since the Working Title mod lets you import flight plans from there. Love flying IFR with this one, but I also sometimes fly low altitude VFR just for fun.
4. Cessna 152 - Asobo
I need an aircraft that can fly low and slow with a great view and preferably with a yoke. The 152 fit the bill nicely and is also fun to fly. I would love to hear if anyone has recommendations for some payware aircraft that can fly low and slow but also has a yoke.
5. Piper Turbo Arrow 3 - Just Flight
This was my first purchase on MSFS. I like flying the turbo arrow when I want a light and simple aircraft that is fairly unrestricted in where it wants to go. I took this thing up to the first base camps at Everest at just about FL200 which suprised me. Honestly, I haven’t flown the turbo arrow much lately because it tends to be very jumpy from supposed turbulence in most stages of flight (unusually so). Many people believe this behavior is a bug in the flight model according to what I’ve read on forums, so I’ve sorta just shelved it for now until there is maybe a patch or something that changes this.
Welcome! Now do yourself a favor and try the 414AW , if you like the 310R you will love the 414.
It´s faster, in my opinion much more fun to fly and the panel is much better
Also the Analog Caravan is a great plane, after it launched i rarely fly the Kodiak.
cheers!
I second the 414 suggestion. The 414 and the 310 pair extraordinarily well together. And they each have different purposes in spite of their obvious similarities. Like the 152 and 172 but twins. I really can’t get enough of both. They are both full featured, study level craft. I do prefer the 310 myself, but it is close and they both are unique. Both have little features and options you will wish the other had. Cessna twins are killing it these days.
Low and slow with a yoke? That gets tricky. The Warrior comes to mind but you already have the Arrow… I tend to take my Goose sightseeing these days.
Welcome to the forums Cashews!! Great first post and exquisite choice of threads to join in on, I must say lol
Low and slow with a yoke really does cut down the field massively, doesn’t it!!? I’m surprised… and totally stumped for any more suggestions that aren’t obvious. I’d second the Goose I suppose haha.
I wonder why a yoke isn’t more common in that type of plane? Maybe you just need faster reaction times (sometimes) in slower planes, to be safe? (Catch it). And a stick is cheaper / easier to implement, lighter and less prone to failures?
Dannmit guys ok ok I get it. I’d already decided to grab the Caravan mod at the weekend…
…but ok ok I’ll try the 414 too! I had another couple I wanted to pick up too, so an expensive weekend ahead for me it seems!!
Ercoupe maybe, perhaps the Bell helicopter which now has floats, and actually I just remembered that I bought the Nieuport 17 on sale but as I’m on holiday away from my PC, not installed it yet hehe. Was even considering the cheaper PMDG 737 to see what all the fuss is about but I’d never get around to learning it.
EDIT: Oh and the Globe Swift that @EdamllamaB was raving about above sounds interesting too. Doh!
@cashews8444 still thinking about slow yokes! Hmmm
EDIT #2: hey @cashews8444 the Globe Swift has a yoke !!
Check out the JPLogisitics freeware mod for the 152 - it’s great!
Another great payware for low and slow is the Just Flight Piper Warrior II. I have the Turbo Arrow III/IV and they are both great and fast. The Warrior is slow and wonderful!
The Steam Caravan is on my short list. The 414 I am skipping. Great plane, great development, but it is too close to the 310 for me. I am happy with my one great Cessna twin.
Speaking of money (I think I mentioned this above somewhere), the next week or so could be expensive, with two Asobo planes coming out, the Floatiak soon, ATRs likely. I mean, come on, give us a break, hehe
Yeah, about time you got the 414.
I am thinking I might need to finally try the Fenix A320.
Asobo planes are cheap
And we have had a drought for a while.
But I do love my KFC! No guilt there haha
But it all adds up. Right now I am looking at the Steam Caravan, Floatiak, Two Asobo planes (hopefully both good), the Velocity XL (just looks fun) and probably an ATR and maybe the Carenado PC-12 (but I really want to wait for the SWS version).
Anyway, that’s probably close to US$200. As I said, expensive
YOLO!!
Skip the PC-12 and wait for SWS I say. Especially if you have those others to entertain you. There… I saved you 20% of your total lol
You have the better of the two, IME, but I can not emphasize enough, they are vastly different planes in the air. They look similar. But the difference in size, speed, and well, the general desire of the 414 to STAY in the air make it so different to fly than the sporty little 310.
They are NOT like the Arrow and Turbo Arrow, which are different but the same. The 310 is for sporty fun with the family, and the 414 is for flying the rock band around on tour.
If you love one, you will love the other but for different reasons.
Again, I really do feel the 310 is the better plane, and it should be at the top of these charts soon if all is fair, but the 414 has the crown for a reason. Bigger, faster, higher, longer distances, and some really cool advancements beyond the 310’s older tech. It is the other greatest GA plane in the sim right now in spite of being another twin Cessna. I fly both a LOT, and I am always happy when I switch back to the other.
I get pretty passionate, as you can see, when folks think they are too similar to bother with the other.
I just started crossing the Himilayas (Kathmandu) in my latest round the world trip, and that 414 sure comes in handy. Fast. Reliable. High altitudes. Less turbulence. Excellent range. Easy landings. When you want to put some real miles behind you or cross some water. Excellent bird.
I bet both the 310 and 414 are great aircraft but I don’t see a space for them in my hanger at the moment. If I fly VFR I want to be able to see the ground (I love you, old Stearman), not look at two huge engines and wings. If I want to fly IFR, I’d rather take the 737 or CJ4 for a spin.
- bae 146
- kodiak
- milviz 310
- milviz pc6
- JF pipers
@neverlucky5204 Man…one day I will get the 414. The cockpit is really nice looking. I could see myself bouncing frequently between the 310 and the 414.
@Baracus250 The Global Swift is beautiful! I think it would fill the spot of low and slow (with a yoke) real nicely for me
@MojaveHigh2379 I’m gonna give the 152 mod a shot. I’ve seen how popular it is but didn’t jump on it just yet. That reminds me to also try out the TBM 930 mod.
@WellREDBarron I’ve got the honeycomb bravo coming in soon and I’m excited to set that up with the 310. I’ve been wanting a better way to control the twin engines compared to my current logitech single throttle. I’ll probably end up doing a US tour in the 310 afterwards. Would be interesting to do with the random failures and all.
