Sorry. Are you MS store version or Steam?
We’ll get this. It’s bugging me too much to give up.
Edit - are you able to find the LocalState folder in your search?

When you start the sim and see this message what is the first thing you do, what do you click?
Do you select to CONTINUE IN SAFE MODE or CONTINUE IN NORMAL MODE?
I wonder if opting to run in safe mode and upon exiting the sim while in safe mode keeps this message appearing at startup?
Steam Version. I just cleaned the registry, and restarted the game, even though I have LOD=10 LOD was definatly not 10 so I went to appdefault/roaming/microsoftflightsimulator/ to edit useropt file except that it hasnt been changed…Started the sim again it still looked like hell, just killed it in task manager, went back to usercfg.opt to check it again, and now there is a lock file, so now Im gonna restart again and see what happens.
It seems kinda of strange that it was looking for that file that didnt exist wonder if theres a flag in the software that gets set, and for some reason .
Okay after testing again still same results, I deleted the lock file started the sim, watched it remake the lock file, and 2 screens later give me the safe mode screen again. I did notice that the sim is looking really bad at the moment, even with extended LOD’s from out of hopkins heading east just past downtown cleveland is a desert no trees bldgs etc. it looks real bad at the moment.
Guess its time to reboot modem router machine and see if that fixes my LOD’s…
Nope - I tried that many times. That running.lock file is the key. It doesn’t seem to clear out even if a normal session is exited. I just finished creating a Task in Windows to delete the running.lock file every time MSFS crashes. Working great for me, haven’t seen that message since.
I’m so sorry, I’ve not seen that happen in my case. Once I delete that file that message is gone for me. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I’ll keep messing with it and if I find anything new I’ll report back.
I’m now getting it constantly too. It was fine yesterday, now every time I start the game this pops up even though all is ok. I haven’t had a single crash with WU6.
Another for the bug list as it appears to now just come up at random.
Seriously guys (@sttovo @BubbaBlitz7348 ) I would check your system reports. If you keep having this pop up the sim is detecting an error…
To be honest it’s not really unexpected for these things to happen to since SU5.
The same things happened prior to SU5. The difference is the protection system added in the last update. Now there is something to help you solve the problem. It does not make sense to disable the protection instead of tracking down the problem.
CaptainOT solved it in the other thread about this, if you launch from the desktop it happens, but if you launch from steam it doesnt it works fine…
Thank you for the idea. I had none of these problems before the latest update. And I’ve not changed my addons at all. I can still fly just fine, just the exit crash, which is fine, I can just use that Task I made to delete the file. Doesn’t appear to hurt anything.
Each to their own. If you are OK with that, have at it. Personally, I would want to determine why its crashing. But that’s just the way I am.
I brought it up to make other aware that the ‘pop-up’ is a warning flag that something isn’t right.
Some will just Sharpie over the ‘Check Engine’ light while others will stop and call for a tow.
Personality types determine our decision processes.
Here’s the other thread about this topic
I can only reconfirm that after a clean setup of MSFS, the first thing appearing was this message. Nothing installed from the market (not even the World Updates), nothing in the community folder. I tried some forensics to find out where MSFS stores the information about the fact that it crashed while exiting. There are only some files updated but I did not discover anything that hints on a crash. Next things I will do is try to monitor and examine the registry and have a look at the event log. I…
Oh I’m totally with you! But I’m now up to 6 hours of testing with a tracking spreadsheet that’s 118 rows long of my results. The actual results are that even a single addon causes the exit CTD. But since it doesn’t impact my ability to fly and enjoy the sim, I can ignore it. For now at least.
And I promise I’d never ignore a check engine light. I can feel my wife rolling her eyes at me right now LOL.
For months people have been clamoring for some sort of error trapping and notification to be built into the sim. MS/Asobo finally include something to help users troubleshoot the MAJORITY of the causes for those errors and immediately we have posts slagging them for being dishonest. Please…!
Anyone that has been around software that allows for 3rd party mods knows that most errors are caused by incompatibilities between the base software and out of date mods, or mods with errors. The first step in tracking down those errors is ALWAYS to remove all mods first to confirm where the error is coming from.
The new pop-up simply clears all non-native software variables and allows the user to confirm whether the failure is caused by the base package or an incompatibility. This helps the user, the developer AND the community in tracking down the bugs that exist within the sim itself.
Maybe we should be saying, “Thank-you Asobo”, but I am aware that is not in the base nature of this forum.
Are you able to draw this conclusion because this is what they tell you or is that what your interpretation tells you by the fact that there bugs when our expectations are of that there should not be and then by way of conversion results in
Microsoft wants to distance himself
Aside from the fact there are bugs do you have any other info that can back what you say in regards to what Microsoft wants?
Problem is, it doesn’t work properly.
I added 8 320NX liveries yesterday which started it coming up every time I started the sim, even though it didn’t crash.
So I emptied my Community folder and added these liveries in 1 by 1 to find the trigger and the message didn’t come up once. So I removed them and added my Community folder back in…no message.
Then I added them both together and just like that the message now pops up each and every start.
It’s a great idea but it doesn’t seem to do what it’s supposed to do.
Read the thread. You will learn that there is often an exception thrown when exiting. The user won’t notice it because you click exit and end up at the desktop as expected. Check your logs and I am fairly confident you will find an error.
There are only 30 some posts, shouldn’t take too long to familiarize yourself with the conversation.

This should be fixed in the upcoming hotfix! They located an invisible crash that happens for some users when they exit the sim, which is prompting the Safe Mode pop up when re-opening the sim even though it didn’t look like you crashed.

Bad quote it appears, but this is from the other topic about this.
Good afternoon, personally, I just installed the old 471.41 driver instead of the new one and did not clean any community folders and everything went fine and as I understood that the new nvidia driver might break the simulator.
