0x800701b1 during launch (Update: It has returned)

After the latest update I see a new (to me) launch screen and then receive the following error

In the bottom right it shows “Signing in” then “Checking for updates” then nothing and this error.

To remedy I have :

  • Running as Administrator
  • Cleared the community folder
  • Performed a repair in apps settings
  • Performed a reset in apps settings
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled to the dedicated disk
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled to a different disk
  • Signed out of Store and Xbox apps, rebooted and signed back in
  • Signed into a different Microsoft account that owns a copy of MSFS
  • Performed WSReset
  • Removed and Reinstalled Gaming Services
  • Launching with only mouse and keyboard connected.
  • Reviewed everything posted in the other thread with this error: FS Re-Installation Fails With Code: 0x800701B1 on Windows / MS Store Version - Bug Reports / Install, Performance & Graphics - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums
  • Switching from wired to wireless
  • Disabled windows firewall
  • Logged into windows under a different profile that also owns Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  • Disabled Real-time protection

I have opened Zendesk 360017133940 for this but posting here in the off chance that someone else has seen this.

UPDATE : So this actually came back about a week ago. I ran through all the troubleshooting steps provided by zendesk as well as moving the sim from drive to drive. Uninstalling, reinstalling, everything I could think of.

I’ve been able to narrow it down to a combination of Xbox game launcher and FS2020 on this particular machine as it does not reproduce on another machine it’s installed on and Forza launches just fine.

(Funny enough, some Forza users are having this same issue FH5 crashes on launch with error code 0x800701b1 : ForzaHorizon (reddit.com) )

I was finally able to work around it on Sunday by turning off my wifi during the initial xbox game services UI splash screen and then enabling it once the actual game launched. However, I’d really like to have it fully fixed and not have to do these extra steps. (This also worked for the Forza users above)

Asobo/zendesk finally told me that the troubleshooting is beyond their scope and I need to open a case with Microsoft.

I presume it has something to do with some data stuck somewhere and the error message has less to do with a physical drive and more to do with a location it’s trying to read or write to.

I’m planning on opening up a case with Microsoft once I have some time and have all my information collected including a procmon and network trace so we can skip some of the obvious steps and get to digging into the real problem.

Since the Flight Sim folks have told me to submit this to Microsoft, I’ve posted it here : Forza Horizon 5 starts the game and reports an error - Microsoft Community

Thanks all. I’ve reviewed the feedback in the other thread and tried the options there. I’ll try with just mouse and keyboard and work back from there as well. That does make sense given the error appears to be hardware related.

Just tried that, no dice. Was a good idea though.

Not entirely sure what changed from yesterday to today but it launched this morning, no problem.

Case closed I guess.

for me it is strange as is work only with admin right . otherwise unable to work the sim code 0x800701b1

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Did you install the sim as an administrator?
If so, that could explain the issue.

This issue may be also due to Microsoft Windows SAN policy which is enabled by default,
and is intended to prevent bringing up SAN Virtual Disks when powering up a VM (Windows Server) in case they are accessed by multiple servers, to avoid any data corruption scenario.
If this isn’t the case in your setup, do the following steps to change the SAN policy to Online.

  1. Open a cmd or PowerShell session
  2. Type in this: diskpart ( then hit enter)
  3. Then type in this: san (then hit enter)
  4. If it shows offline, change the statement to OnlineAll:
    DISKPART> SAN POLICY=OnlineAll

Today this happens to me as well after there was a Gaming Services and XBox App Update. Before the update, it worked fine just a few hours prior to the update(s). Will try some things now. Any suggestions other than the above?

but in fact is not a solution .

if that help ( i ll just back from holiday )
and exact was working perfectly before all updates from microsoft store

It’s just a work around until we hear about a fix. Make sure to turn your wifi back on once the game launches.

Okay, I managed to start the sim now. I had to enable “offline availability” in XBox App, disconnect from Wifi and the Error Message disappears. Then reconnect Wifi. Never had that. Hope this never come back again…

Aaaaand they tell me to reboot or just wait longer.

Happening today. Flew fine yesterday. Exact thing happened. Noticed that gaming svcs app and Xbox app were both updated today, now this !

What do I do to fly? I am using wired ethernet

Where on earth is that setting (enable offline availablity) n the Xbox app? I can’t find it anywhere.
Besides, I have wired ethernet. So do I disable it? But without knowing where the above setting you mention, what’s the point trying?
I can’t launch the sim. Did diskpart and online all they were fine.

I’m stumped by this!

Settings > general

Ms Store app
App settings
image

Thank you for that. I’ll look tomorrow it’s 0045 in Perth. Wasted 5 hours on this broken sim.

EDIT..couldn’t sleep so I tried. . Doesn’t work. That setting does not look the same as yours. I can’t find it. All I coud see under my profile name ability to run games limited to off-line or online. Tried both. No good.only allowed to change that setting 2 times per year!! Too risky.

Besides, it looks totally different to yours. There is no “settings >general” in my ms store app.

What has broken this sim???

Can you please show me where to click to find that setting. I’m Lost beyond words.
