Also… I reset all graphics recently to see if that would fix it. Barely detectable.
What GPU is it? You are way over the 5gb limit of VRAM, but any card with only 5gb isn’t going to run the 4K you’re trying.
Seems like a faulty GPU if it’s only reporting 5gb (a strange amount for any card!).
Can you try dx11 to see if its better?
CPU is i5 9400 at 2.90 GHz x6 (6 core)
GPU is nVIdia GTX 1660 with 6 GB VRAM
32 GB of RAM; DDR4
I’ll reset back to DX11 and see how that goes.
You’ve run out of VRAM, that’s one of the reasons for poor performance. Try DX11 like others have said and lower your Render Resolution, it’s way too high for that card…
But you are trying to run 4096x2126? Have you ran that before or is that a mistake!?
There ain’t no way that card can handle it IMO.
Yeah, he needs to run it at 1920×1080 and see how it goes…
The GPU is using 5.325gb out of a total available of 4.925 gb? So … using shared memory over and above the VRAM amount?
Am I reading this wrong? (Probably showing my lack of knowledge here)
Whatever, like you I’m not sure why it is not showing nearer the 6gb the 1660 is supposed to have.
I don’t know much about that card but I know it’s not going to be able to push that resolution. That is basically minimum spec for the game, right?
And why 1gb is missing is very strange.
Really don’t understand that either. Just wondered if I was misreading something that’s all.
Anyway, irrespective of this, it is very clear the GPU is the reason for the bad performance as others have already said.
Thanks guys. I’ll try this.
It was running smooth before though, 3 weeks ago back, approximately, it started having issues.
I’ll let you know how DX11 does.
EDIT: I wonder if it is resolution… That shook loose a memory… I would always jump resolution to high when I was shooting screenshots. :S
Pretty sure the denominator of the GPU Mem value is the amount available for MSFS, rather than the total amount of the card. Something else on the system is using the missing 1GB.
And FWIW, yeah, stuttering on .11 beta is maybe the worst yet of this batch of betas. I hope they work it out!
It’s worth pointing out for anyone that sees stutters that this full rolling cache issue has been a bug since SU14. I regularly have to clear out (delete and recreate) my (8GB) rolling cache when it fills up otherwise I get bad stutters. There is something about how the sim manages a full rolling cache that is performance debilitating. I’m not on the beta, but if this hasn’t been fixed in SU15 then it could be what you are seeing. It’s worth a try.
Ureka!!
Up to 15 FPS…
- I bought a new TV, Samsung 65". Bigger ratio
- I was running windows mode, which is now larger. I didnt realize. I have settings at 3K, not 4K, so running at Windows mode, it was running 4K. Going to full screen mode, it went down to 3K. Frame rates are back up.
15 FPS is low, but for me, it will work. I am mostly building, not flying, sadly, but this is so much more smoother then 7 FPS.
I also flipped it to DX11. Same performance, no difference.
And… She locks on 15 FPS even, 15.0. I tried to see if I could up that setting, but setting is set to screen settings, so its at 100% right now, and I can only lower that. For now, its like glass-smooth for me. So much better then bouncing from 5 to 7 FPS, lol…
Someday, I hope to get a beautiful RTX 4K GC with a lot of VRAM.
Many thanks for your help and input. I figured it was a bug. sigh…
Back to the Salt mines…

As @Baracus250 pointed out, this card is not viable for the resolutions you are trying to push, even if you are “happy” with 15fps. It’s going to have other issues in addition to low FPS.
At best it’s a 1080p card, you wouldn’t even run 2K on it let alone anything higher.
I still use a 6GB RTX 2060 and get great performance at 2K, but I have tweaked the settings a lot to balance the tradeoffs necessary to do that. The stock 2060 is pretty much the minimum viable 2K GPU as well.
I’m very aware I’m right on the performance limit for pixel pushing 2K in MSFS, so unless there’s a major regression in sim performance (which I’m not seeing in the beta myself) then any issues I have are typically down to me breaking the performance envelope of my hardware, not the sim.
You can’t run a card that’s not built for what you’re trying to push pixel wise, and then complain about performance. Well, you can, but it’s not a credible argument or valid feedback. Aircraft have defined performance envelopes and operating specs for good reasons, and GPU’s are no different.
You [generic you here, this happens a lot] need to be realistic about the hardware you have and what resolutions/settings are needed to give acceptable performance.
I’ve been getting occasional freezes of .5 to 5 seconds while flying. I can’t identify a pattern to it. The sim unfreezes and then everything progresses normally.
Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
Yes. The behavior is the same with DX12.
Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
I normally use DLSS (Quality). No FG. 14900K/4090. I have no large addon airports.
If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:
i noitce i always get it turning on to Catalina runway to take off. Its a minor observation and may not mean anything.
I just had this, but for much longer than 1 sec on approach into KPSP in the FSR500.
I got it again, during shutdown when I turned my head to use the EFB, but the freeze was much shorter.
I was having a lovely VFR flight up the Hawaiian Islands chain from the Big Island to Honolulu in the FlyingIron F6F Hellcat. This is a pretty straightforward steam gauge warbird, and although the engine systems are well-modeled, the plane is a not hard on any CPU. WIth the frame-gen mod and my 3070, I was easily churning past 150fps for much of the flight. I had a few stutters at about 10,000’ - 11,000’ as I flew past Maui, which I found quite odd as I don’t have any 3rd party scenery installed for it. Flight towards Oauhu was fine through most of the descent but as I descended below 1,000’ AGL all the way almost to touchdown, I had a series of almost crippling stutters out of the blue.
I fly around Oahu all the time and consequently have a number of addons for the region - iniBuilds PHNL, SamScene US Cities with downtown Honolulu modeled, Miltech’s Ambhibious Ready Group and Seafront Simulations Hawaiian Vessels. But because I fly these old warbirds around here all the time, I know what performance SHOULD be like for me. And thus stuttery mess on short final is not it.
