2024 ActiveSky Weather Program Main Thread

Didn’t activate framegen on DX12. I was just testing and trying to solve this issue Help me fix this Raymarched Reflections issue please and realised that rain particals was so different with same weather preset on dx12 vs dx11, even on cockpit windows. Probably was a shader cache issue. Now my fps locks to 60 from 120 whenever i activate Vsync , low latency settings ingame options and when i alt-tab out of sim it goes back to 120 on lg c1 tv, i still couldn’t figure out why is it doing so. I was gonna get ActiveSky but wanted to wait for msfs2024 news. Some screenshots above looks so realistic and amazing. Sorry for off-topic. Have a great day you all.

From scanning this thread am I correct it seems Active Sky is much better for snow coverage than live weather? I often fly in Alaska and New Zealand and the snow coverage is so bad in default live weather. Especially in Juneau where snow remains the entire summer.

ill take a screenshot in Juno later today for you with ASFS and MSFS live weather

Default live weather uses snow coverage maps from MeteoBlue. Evidently the horizontal resolution of those maps is often not very high, so snow on mountaintops will “spill over” into adjacent valleys which are actually snow free. This is an issue in places like Milford Sound NZ, Juneau AK and many places in the Alps in Europe. It remains to be seen if higher-resolution snow data will be used in MSFS2024.

ASFS simply uses airport METARS, and if no snow is indicated in a METAR, it will not appear when ASFS is injecting weather.

The problem with that is you won’t see mountaintop snow where it actually does exist in real time. I did a flight from LAX to BWI a couple of days ago with Live Weather. Several of the highest peaks in the Colorado Rocky Mountains still have some snow, and that was depicted well on the flight.

Note also there is a known bug for Juneau which if memory serves correctly is from the Orbx Alaska mesh add-on which comes with a custom airport scenery. If installed, you will always have snow on the ground within the scenery area of the airport.

SU15 was supposed to fix the sea-ice coverage issue. Not sure about the snow coverage though.

Hi, still no glider pilot here using AS???

Maybe you’d have better luck asking on their forums

Former IRL glider pilot here
I have to admit that I rarely fly gliders in msfs because of, in my opinion, I’m not satisfied with Live weather. I’ve not tried ASFS with glider yet.

Believe me - I asked…

I wish someone have time and compare this default weather with Activesky. I never ever see something like this before on MSFS. https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftFlightSim/comments/1d7sllt/wow_current_weather_in_barrow_alaska_pabr/

New Beta was released;

Update 060324 B8920 (1.0.8920.30819)

  • Added Sim tip/message options to control in-sim tip/messages accordingly (must have Software Tips enabled in MSFS Assistance/Notification options) - Docs updated
  • Added instant refresh when temperature units change to prevent slow temp and precip type (snow vs. rain) adjustment
  • Added additional auto flight plan load/clear logging
  • Various tuning/fixes for in-cloud turbulence
  • Additional in cloud detection improvements/fixes for better accuracy
  • Increased effective rain/precip rate and fixed an issue where very low precip rate could be experienced (Note: you must be under a cloud to experience precipitation – not seeing precip, or seeing much reduced precip rates when there is less cloudy sky above is normal)
  • Increased general precipitation smoothing rate for more visible dynamics on precip condition changes
  • Reduced general cumulus density 20% to further reduce potential grainy/shimmering cloud edges
  • Reduced general cirrus generation approximately 20%
  • Reduced CAVOK/NCD/NSC cloud generation general occurrence approximately 20% per feedback
  • Reduced CAVOK/NCD/NSC general cloud coverage approximately 20% per feedback
  • Adjusted cirrus altitude and coverage logic to trend to more variable values in general without trending too high in some cases
  • Improved turbulence dynamics in vicinity of thunderstorm clouds
  • Further slowed general cloud altitude smoothing rate per feedback, by approximately 50% in most cases
  • Offset historical downloads to use data set based on -30 minutes for more expected historical playback results without getting METARs past the historical active time
  • Prevented download timer from resetting when Refresh weather button pressed in debug screen - now the download timer will fire separate of any refresh results without getting METARs past the historical active time
  • Prevented location change/instant weather reset on “reconnect” of MSFS connection, when last disconnect was within 30 seconds
  • Fixed issue where some stations were delayed in updating during 30 minute update cycles
  • Fixed issue with Chinese language altitude units conversion in Metric units mode (resulted in incorrect cloud/wind altitudes)
  • Fixed issue with precip and snow cover units/conditions in some units modes/language settings
  • Fixed issue with unexpectedly low precip/rain in -TS/-TSRA thunderstorm conditions
  • Fixed issue with Norwegian language units issues incl. temperature
  • Fixed missing cloud turb/cloud detection when in Passive mode and no cloud data exists for ASFS but exists in MSFS live weather
  • Attempted Fix for issue with gusts/variability for surface layer(s) where it was not properly depicting in some cases

No. We get snow info from GFS snow depth data. There are some issues with some unexpected MSFS snow-condition overrides as well as the less-than-ideal resolution we are currently using. This is a work in progress, and will improve.

If anyone is having bugs/issues with snow or anything else in beta versions, we’d appreciate a notice/report of that in our ASFS forum or via support ticket. Thanks!

We don’t always respond to all posts but we are always reading and using your feedback to prioritize our efforts. Thanks for that!

We have some intrinsic glider features here based on our thermal and vertical air/air effect features which use terrain type and terrain slope/wind analysis, which is a bit limited in MSFS2020 but improving rapidly. We also have wake turbulence.

We don’t currently analyze cumulus cloud positions nor add cumulus cloud lifting as we don’t have reliable cloud position data (we’re working on it). We do have CB inflow/outflow and up/downdraft simulation which affects vertical air effect application and turbulence.

Additional transient ambient wind (in all dimensions) effects are also in progress.
We’d appreciate any feedback/suggestions/reports on our forums as we don’t monitor everything on all forums and might miss it. Thanks!

Just a little comparison between msfs live weather and activesky preset control.

could you tell me your main active sky settings?

General options

  • Download interval 15
  • Prevent downloads on approach and departure TRUE
  • Clone dep/dest weather FALSE

Simulator depiction options

  • Depiction smoothing rate 25
  • Periodic theme reload 4

Those are the main ones. Select Realism mode and then try those settings.

thank you so much

New stable release is out, 8927.

Thanks!

Just updated, wasn’t on the Beta’s and see this new Realism Mode, going to give it a try with your options.

In the earlier versions I had better luck without loading my Simbrief flight plan, are you loading it or no?

Thanks.

Yeah, simbrief fp is loaded. Still have to test it without a flight plan loaded to see if it’s better with this version.
