I don’t know if this will help anyone, and I only have experience in 2024 with ActiveSky, but… ActiveSky adds a menu item to the MSFS menu bar. I believe you need to open that menu item (it will bring up the main ActiveSky app screen) to ensure that ActiveSky and MSFS can “talk” to each other, or something like that. All I know is I do that every time, and I’ve never had issues getting the weather to generate in-sim.
It will work whether you press that icon or not, as long as you launched the program to begin with. All the icon seems to do is run it, and actually tries to launch a second copy if you already have it open. It’s not working in SU4 right now, though.
are you guys running Passive mode… or the preset mode? Just curious…
Both, and situational.
Active sky is running well on free flight but since su3 it is not working in career mode… has anybody got it to work in career mode?
Mine works if i go in career, note starting airport, then start a free flight at that airport, let it load and start ASky. Then quit out of freeflight (dont quit Asky) and go back into career and start flight.
It may work by just going into any freeflight and getting ASky linked, even before starting career mode.
Nice workaround!
Thx i am gonna try that but definitely something changed with su3
Would be happy to give Active Sky another go, but I just really don’t like the weather transitions.
Does anyone who is satisfied with it have some settings I could try that minimise this?
Thanks for any help!
You can still use it in Passive mode, which allows Asobo generated clouds but with plane effects driven by ASFS. This is a good compromise as you have no transitions to worry about. The winds, in passive mode at least at the moment, as it looks like Active has no gusts now, are better than Asobo default. You can get a lot of turbulence when ASFS detects when you are in a cloud.
You can customise how long it takes a transition to occur, and I think the period in which it updates. So you could set the period to 10 minutes, and then a minute or two to complete the transition. That would make it less abrupt.
A did a few flights in both msfs 2020 and 24 last night.
Im assuming that active sky are affected by the weather issue as I couldn’t get any weather imported in the sim
Is this worth buying I want to buy it but I have a few questions first,
-Does the transition of weather just like change or is it a smooth transition to different weather when using live weather?
-Does it hurt performance alot?
I usually fly on vatsim so I need live weather I hope someone can help me ![]()
I’ve been using it for some time, and have not noted any abrupt weather changes in live weather.
I also have not noticed any drop in performance at all with Active Sky.
The live weather is quite good and almost always spot on.
Based on my personal experience I do not recommend it in its current state. It works half of the time at best, and I also find that the MSFS default live weather is way more accurate than AS. I’ve deleted AS for now. YMMV, of course.
That sure is a 100% difference to my experience.
I’ve never had a problem with it since I purchased it.
It has worked flawlessly for me, and in regards to accuracy, I have the opposite again.
Activesky is substantially more accurate than MSFS, which is based on a forecast metar blend.
Did you contact them to find out why?
Can’t be bothered to be honest. But based on what I’ve read on their forums I’m not alone, and the developer has acknowledged that they are looking into it. Which tells me enough really.
Glad it’s working for you though. As I wrote: YMMV ![]()
Yes it sure does say something indeed.
Thank you for that info, I rarely get a chance to get away from these forums enough to visit others!
Maybe it’s just my perception.
I based my statement on flights in my local area, which always seem spot on.
Flying in other areas I just assumed the weather was correct also.
My experience with Active Sky is the same as @TheSevenflyer. Flawless for myself.
There are downsides to both modes.
Passive mode is great if you prefer the Asobo weather formations, but still want the atmospheric effects on your plane. Active Preset is great if you desire a perhaps more accurate representation of the weather, but then that same weather is all around you, and you don’t see distant weather fronts. It also seems to have a bug now where you don’t get any wind gusts at all. There is a new version of ASFS due to be released but I think they may be waiting for the final release of SU4 for 2024.
Other minor, but irritating issues are where you shut ASFS down, and you now can’t control which weather mode you are using in the sim. You can choose live, and it will keep resetting to clear skies. You also occasionally get duplicated ASFS Active Preset entries, that you need to manually delete from the relevant folder.
I would still recommend it though, for the additional wind effects in Preset mode if nothing else.
Do you mind sharing which folder this is? I had like a dozen AS Preset entries when I deleted it…
