Fyi - I had this type of issue with my Kensington mouse and installing the manufacturers drivers fixed it.
5800X3D or 7800x3D?
Good question. I did ask myself the same question.
Here is my 2 cents:
- 5800X3D remains a great value option regardless of the AM5 teething issues
- 7800X3D will be costlier, faster, better, most likely offering performance on par with higher end chips, if not better for MSFS due to scheduling
- Some AM5 early adopters have indeed reported issues, mainly around memory training/timings, etc
HOWEVER: single CCX 3D chips do not have the same memory scaling characteristics as other AMD CPUs for two reasons:
a) a generous L3 cache means memory frequency is not as important as for non 3D chips with lesser cache
b) if you have 1 CCX you do not need to worry about the latency that comes with communication between 2 nodes
Bottom line:
Memory frequency does not matter as much when youāre on one of those two chips, that is one of the benefits having a large 3DVcache and a single CCX:
- 5800X3D does not ārequireā faster memory to perform adequately like say a 5950X would.
- On 7800X3D the difference between running DDR5 at 4800mhz and 6000Mhz will not be significant IRL
What does that mean for an upgrade?
If you intend to go for AM4 and reuse an existing DDR4 kit, even if it is not 3600 with the best timings, 5800X3D will still shine.
On the other hand, if you intend on investing in an AM5 7800X3D CPU, just run your DDR5 sticks at 4800 Mhz.
That way you can avoid most of the teething issues people are reporting with memory training at 6000Mhz, and still get the benefits of a great CPU, whilst AMD works on releasing an updated AGESA firmware, etc, to iron out the current issues.
I bit the bullet and grabbed the 5800x3d today, along with a cheaper MSI B550 mobo. Had some hiccups along the way, but nothing too hard to overcome and mostly my fault anyway. I didnāt get much time to play with it, but impressed so far. I can already tell it will not have any trouble keeping up with my graphics card with room to spare. I could almost max out both LOD sliders plus run a fair bit of FSLTL at KORD and still have frame times low enough to keep a 30fps lock, but it was too much for my 6600XT graphics card to keep up with at all times and will need to find a good balance again.
Not sure when Iāll be back at it, but Iāll need to get PBO set up on it and do further adjustments.
welcome in the club
I am enjoying my 5800x3d since Friday, everything is OK.
With my RX 7900 XT I am still in the āgetting to know each otherā phase; overall very good performance, but few things I need to sort out before I can say it is s true love
I think thatās a never ending phase for me. Constantly tweaking. XD
Interesting comments which seem to make sense.
Thanks
Thanks for posting.
My take from this one review:
-
7800x3d is very much a gaming cpu although it doesnāt necessarily have the best performance across all games
-
7800x3d is pretty much down the chart for productivity software (as expected)
-
7800x3d is an energy efficient cpu
-
The intel i5 13600k is pretty much a bargain performance wise if you want to save a few pounds
-
7800x3d is much better for gaming than 7950x3d but much worse for productivity software (as expected)
MSFS Specific 7800X3D numbers here:
Thank you.
I will have a look
Very interesting, 7950x3d owners, wipe away the tears my friends.
Why would 7950X3D users wipe away tears???
In case they thought theyād bought wrong. Obviously, use case is a factor too though.
I never hesitated for a second on my 7950X3D.
I would NOT recommend 7800X3D for MSFS. Not unless all you will do is just run MSFS purely.
If you will have things like Volanta, Navigraph Charts, Web Browsers(Simbrief), etc. then 7950X3D will definitely be the BEST.
Remember, these 7800X3D benchmarks of MSFS are done with just the game running and no background apps. That is the beauty of 7950X3D. Once background apps are going, the second CCD turns on and there is no performance loss in the sim as it is still using vcache at 100%.
well when I use background apps with the 10900k with like navigraph charts, simtoolkitpro, FSLTL, GSX, etc, a lot of the cores are still not be utilized. You donāt need 16 cores.
I think I finally have my 5800x3d dialed in, and this new mobo also let me overclock my 3000MHz rated ram up to 3200MHz with slightly looser timings (I may play with that more later). At OāHare/KORD with higher FSLTL settings than before (will require more tuning, mostly based on ATC getting clogged), going from 55 TLOD to 135, and light clouds preset, Iām GPU bound and locked at 30fps during the day and night. I can finally pan around with no stutters. Whatās odd, though, is I can have no v-syncs turned on but itās not refreshing faster than 30fps even though it shows my frame times in the mid 20msās.
Once I get up in the air, then the fps lock releases and Iām getting well over 40fps, and this is where I am most impressed. It use to be that I had to set v-sync to 30fps or reduce settings to maintain over 55fps to prevent stutters when panning the camera. Now Iām able to run in the 40ās for near buttery smooth frame rates and almost no stutters while at higher settings. Still fairly GPU bound as expected, but Iām happy with it as is now.
uh unless you launch an encoding in X265 at the same time of MSFS, it is absolutely not the few applications like navigraph FSLT etc etc which will consume core resources, moreover X3D or not MSFS still does not use the all hearts. The only interest of the 7950X3D remains in its full application capacity for 3D and video creators, which still represents a small percentage of users. What bothers me the most is above all the stability problems of the AM5 platform.
I am totally happy with my decision to go with the 5800x3d, I would do the same choice now as well considering the value what I get due to the lower price of components.
Unfortunately canāt say the same about the RX 7900XT. It is no doubt a very powerful card, when you know all the limitations then you can avoid CTD. It was quite a bit frustrating to find it out that the Raden driver crashes when I open Navigraph charts in browser when MSFS is running, then learned also with google map, etcā¦if you know what not to do then it is a beast, but i feel frustrated and I am seriously considering to replace it with an RTX 4070 Ti. Sad, but if I want to enjoy MSFS more than doing troubleshooting then I afraid I have no other option.
Yes. I wrote this in back in January, so it was kind of predictable:
I think Iād rather go 4080 for the better VRAM figure amongst other features. Just crank up render scale.
PS: Iāll happily trade you my 3070 for that 7900XT.
