How Microsoft Flight Simulator Recreated Our Entire Planet
They should call it the Earth Simulator. They did a beautiful job on the world- and I hope they keep making it better. However, the Flight part still needs a LOT of work IMO.
making the world is arguably the harder job, once the world and its weather is nailed down the flight dynamics can start to be nailed down.
given flight dynamics would count for nought if the world and its weather etc was to still be undergoing huge change.
These videos must be doctored… My scenes never look this amazing, or they cherry pick locations. I mean MSFS2020 looks great don’t get me wrong, but their PR videos look so over the top. Or I’m doing something wrong…
So you are saying that the world and weather are more important than Planes in a FLIGHT SIMULATOR?
if the weather and the simulation of “air” etc are incomplete and subject to huge further change or are not even there, then what exactly do you think you can do with planes, given the medium through which they fly is the notion of air with its dynamics of temperature, moisture and its own flows etc.
Same thing they (Microsoft) did in 2004 with FS9. Asobo seems to have trouble with 16 YEARS later. Also all the 3rd party study level companies did 16 years ago and they are having trouble with Asobo SDK 16 years later.
Well, obviously its cherry picked. Bog standard it’s good but not stunning.
Can’t we just ban pointless pictures ? We know it’s pretty. We want to know boring things you know, like, when will it be flyable if you don’t just want to play VFR.
I, for one, like the screen shots people post.
I can post a ton of beautiful screenshots and YT clips. With a little editing and creativity, I can make the sim look almost life-like. However, completing a full flight without a glitch, well, that’s another matter entirely.
Of course GA fliers who only go up for a short stroll in clear skies aren’t going to notice a lot of the bad stuff.
I am wondering what does it mean high tech in this context, the whole game is not high-tech at all, maybe the world renderer, the game is a great world renderer at the moment, nice innovation there, not an easy task. In a couple of years it will be an awesome flight simulator too, so we have a good starting point, I paid 60+ bucks for this starting point, not for everyone, but since I already paid for it, I will keep the hopes it will get better at some point. I would like to see more high-tech in other aspects of the game, but I understand I have to be patient, they have their own priorities and surely they know why. Satisfaction varies a lot depending on the user’s previous experience and present expectation, sincerely I was expecting a flight simulator, but I didn’t find what I was expecting. Anyways, MS knows how to generate hype, they did such an amazing advertising campaign.
Just don’t touch a knob or change your flight plan on the YT video…
Normally, so would I. But much of it is a distraction tactic from the problems of the Sim “oh it’s pretty”. I know. “We can make it prettier” BFD at 4,000 ft.
Well much of it is hype. It’s not an AI system, in any meaningful sense of the word. Looks to me like it takes a mixture of the data thats out there and bing images to produce quasi Ortho tiles which it downloads on the fly. The algorithms in that are manually tunable but they don’t learn.
Then it’s supplemented with hand made stuff. Which is very nice.
Not knocking it, but it’s not massively clever either.
Exactly, I still find it hard to believe that something so important as a prop drag is still not simulated and many more things.
I think that this next sim update will be a nice indication of where is this sim heading in terms of geting more realism.
As an aside, when you fly the FBW A320 Neo, you can IMHO get a very immersive experience, viz. this YT of a flight from Honolulu to Maui in “live weather”.
If you advance to 14:00minutes, you can see the interaction with the various buttons and settings in order to land the aircraft in heavy sidewinds prevalent at this airport:
Even if you don’t touch a knob, that doesn’t stop the AP from an uncommanded diving barrel roll with bank angles exceeding 45deg… on a straight leg segment.
That has not happened on my A320 Neo flights using AP
I did not see any interaction after 14:00 minutes.
I agree. Most of the stuff that gets posted on You Tube looks way better than it does on my computer screen when flying FS2020. Too bad. I guess it is just the way things are at present.
