So I’ve been looking at diving in and getting the Aerosoft CRJ, but a couple of things have alarmed me and raised an interesting question.
Both the terrain and weather radars are still non functioning due to sim access restrictions, and with Asobos/Microsoft’s focus seemingly on World Updates, additional aircraft and (hopefully) bug fixes, where does that leave us with continued updates to the SDK/sim to allow such features to exist in 3rd party aircraft?
I can’t help but feel that the sim really should have been released with access to such features considering how vital they are for most aircraft operations. I get the feeling that this is a huge oversight that continues to get ignored in favour of attempts to make the sim prettier and more appealing to general users rather than focusing on what simmers want.
I’ve been around since late beta, and I can honestly say that this is no longer a “sim for simmers”. What’s more, I increasingly feel that it really never was (or was going to be).
I’d be interested to know the communities thoughts.
I feel the same. Its been all about graphics and scenery since day 1. Thats not just Asobosoft’s fault but what the majority of the users seems to care about.
Imagine if people cared as much about those kind of sim features as much as graphical LOD settings issues.
Asobo has definitely put most of its budget into making a pretty launch sim even prettier and to me, even after launch, it was obvious that the effort should have been put into other areas e.g.
better SDK for better payware addons(very important)
stable and bug free sim (extremely important)
better aircraft systems (very important)
full multi monitor support
better ai
helicopters
Just my opinion, but since launch I think the emphasis has been on the wrong areas. Asobo are good at scenery and this is where a lot of the effort and budget has gone. This has left the sim weak at the moment in areas such as stability, weak default aircraft systems (gns 530 etc), and an SDK which doesn’t yet provide all third party devs. (A2A Simulations ?) with the tools they need for ultra realistic products.
On the flip side I will say that they have done great with performance and fps. X-Plane 11 (for me) never gave me this level of performance nor looked anything like as good. As I said, it is a very pretty sim.
What I do not understand is the false pride they have of this product versus 3rd party devs and the SDK. They dont want anyone else making a better plane or weather which if they let REX or HIFI have a real SDK more people would buy the Sim. PRIDE comes before the FALL.
Yes, they do seem to have locked down the weather system and some of the aircraft ai files from what I can gather making it difficult for a good weather system or accurate ai liveries at airports. I think one result of this was Aerosoft not proceeding with the ai livery product. It’s possible i’m wrong here but that was my understanding anyway.
As far as I understood Aerosofts complaint regarding not having access to real weather information was pointing out the fact that the current available weather radar’s in the game is just using cloud coverage, which is probably something the CRJ could do too, which is just not how its supposed to be.
I think what irritates me more than anything else is that there were so many promises made through marketing and the feature discovery videos which have just been forgotten.
The Q&As are a total joke as well. The questions are obviously curated and answers pre-written, with anything meaningful stripped out. I doubt questions such as mine would ever stand a chance at reaching them for a genuine answer.
Well, here is one “simmer” who loves FS2020.
It is great.
I fly IFR/ILS on the WT CJ4 primarily.
Hardly never above 3,000 feet. Maybe some times in the C172 G1000.
Love the scenery. Of, course.
Plane handles well. Flight is smooth.
Yes my i9-9900K, GTX 1660 TI, 64GB, M.2 MVNe SSD flies pure 4K at 19 FPS.
And it is great. Gorgeous graphics.
Ever wonder why? I can’t say why. I don’t know.
But, no one has ever asked.
Instead of trying to prove a negative, why not try to prove what
those of us have that is positive.
Maybe, that will help you see the answer you want.
I think you’ve missed the point of the topic. I’m not denying that it’s a pretty sim, what’s concerning is the apparent lack of focus on what makes a simulator a simulator.
You can’t really simulate an approach into LOWI without a working terrain radar, doing so would be an enormous breach of SOPs.
As a game, MSFS is great (when the updates don’t break it) but as a genuine simulator it’s obviously lacking.
But, if it is me, you have missed the point of the Topic.
The point of the Topic is not educated.
Okay, your point taken.
That is the truth. What makes a simulator is a simulator.
But, I bought a $180 (don’t remember what the cost was) USD FS2020 simulator.
But:
I flew once at Left Seat in a Multi-million Dollar Simulator at one of the
major US Airlines Simulators for Real Pilots and the the Check Pilot
was supervising me.
I am not a RL Pilot.
But, heck, I don’t expect FS2020 to be equal to that Simulator.
The Hydraulics on it was impressing, much more the rest.
But, it did not have any graphics like FS2020 (That was 1980s).
You should check your expectations.
FS2020 is not a Multi-million USD simulator on your or my PC.
It is a Multi-million dollar Simulator for Asobo and Microsoft.
It is not the truth.
The truth is that it is a wonderful achievement by Asobo
and I love flying it.
I’m not even sure I understand what that means? Assuming ‘general users’ are the majority are they not the core focus? After that the high-end features are really important as many of the ‘house-flyers’ develop their skills and interests and will want to do more.
SOP ? Are you sure ? I land there all the time, my Cessna 172 has no terrain radar, on the left I see a glass cockpit instrument with mountains on either side. With an accurate altimeter (key B), I can land there with some mist.. aerosols set to 20 or so.. When there is a heavier mist and forward view is very limited, you’re not allowed to land anyway.
I have been sim flying since MS2000 (MS2k). The point is my FS9.75 functions better than this MSFS2020 and it is 17 YEARS OLD. MSFS 2020 has better scenery and clouds but the planes and operations is better on an 17year old sim. THAT is the problem. No way should this be the case in 2021
