A1R Ryan STM-2

Just seen this new in the MS Store -not sure if it is available elsewhere - A1R’s website seems to lack that information. Just wondered if anyone had purchased it and what the feedback is?It says native FS2024 and it is different from their Ryan ST-A Special…

I am so glad that A1R revisited the Ryan ST (the Ryan ST series being among my most favorite aircraft of all time). I enjoyed flying their STA Special in MSFS 2020, but I always desired to have one of the stock/unmodified Ryan ST’s in the sim, which this product for MSFS 2024 now provides with the STM. You get the stock wheeled and float versions of the STM, as well as wheeled and float versions of the modified single-seat “Special” with extra fuel/range. Plus, there is an additional single-seat/long-range variant that is fitted with a Garmin G3X & autopilot. There are five paint schemes included - polished metal factory-delivered civilian, Dutch Air Force, US Army Air Corps, civilian red/white, and a racer blue/white.

I think this product is excellent. As far as the accuracy and fidelity of A1R’s modeling and texturing go, there is none better. The flight model is very well done, and I think a great improvement over the flight model they originally had with their 2020 Ryan STA Special. It’s a joy to fly, from takeoff through landing. For the most part I also think the sounds are fantastic. My only gripe is there is a buzz at high RPM/power which I’m not really a fan of, but I can certainly live with it for how good the rest of the product is.

It’s neat, with the attention to detail, to notice that there are a couple of different style wood prop textures used through the different paint schemes (one with more contrast between light/dark wood than the other standard wood prop). The aircraft uses a venturi rather than a pitot tube, and it’s the first aircraft I can recall having to remove a venturi cover during the walkaround rather than a pitot cover. The aircraft is a joy to fly doing wing overs, rolls and loops, and it does forward slips very well too. As much as I like period instruments, which are very well represented in the majority of the variants, it’s also really neat to have the version with the Garmin G3X - I’m sure it’s not something that’s been done in reality, among the flyers today, but I wouldn’t count something like that out, either, especially with the replicas being built now.

Other than the buzzing sound at high RPM, my only other criticism is that, even with weight added for the passenger seat, no passenger ever shows visually. And I’ve noticed that the fuel gauge on the instrument panel never reads completely full when the fuel tank is full - I’m not sure if that’s intentional or not. At least there is also the sight gauge in the stock variants.

I’ve been really enjoying flying it in VR. When taxiing, although you can’t see over the nose, the fuselage is so narrow that you can easily tilt your head out the side and see in front of the aircraft’s path. It has taken me several landings to get re-accustomed to properly judging the aircraft’s distance from the ground and three-point attitude, but properly achieved, it settles into a three-point landing very, very nicely (it’s quite benign main-wheeling it as well, with no vices). Also in VR, in the float version, it’s really neat to be able to look down out both sides of the cockpit and see the floats and the water rudders/rigging, doing their job when you’re taxiing around on the water.

There have been some truly fantastic vintage GA aircraft released in recent weeks for MSFS 2024, and the A1R Ryan STM is no exception.

A few more screenshots.

What airport is that first screenshot with the P-40 and Wildcat?

Yep, +1 from me. This is very well done. Lots of fun! Welcome to 2024!

It’s the recently-released MSFS 2024 (version 2.0) Frasca Field (C16) scenery by Flyt. Among other updates they’ve made to their original 2020 release, it now opens up the Frasca family’s hangar with their P-40E and FM-2 well represented inside. The static P-40E looks so nice, I wish we had a flying version of it.

Purchasing tonight! I love this plane, too!!! Thanks for the great review! I loved the ST-A, and wished they had added the second seat, now they have. It was so awesome in VR!

I need a big fan on my desk! and maybe an engine oil scent injector. I’m picturing talking Glade into developing flight simulator products!

Amazing shots John!

I was surprised to see this as well, and the G3X version has a “GMC507” style AP. It felt dirty to fly that one LOL but I love glass too.

I’ll add a few pics hope you don’t mind

It may be of interest to some folks who may not know, that while there are quite a number of original Ryan ST’s flying today, there is also a company called “Timber Tiger Aircraft” which manufactures 95% scale replica homebuilt kits of the Ryan ST. To my eye, they really look the part: ST-L Kit (Ryan ST replica) — Timber Tiger Aircraft Homebuilt Airplane Kits With the A1R Ryan ST variant fitted with the Garmin G3X and autopilot, I can pretend I’m flying one of those modern replicas fitted with modern equipment.

Here are some more detail shots of the MSFS 2024 A1R Ryan STM. I love when a developer pays this close of attention to the smallest visual details. It’s neat to see how in the front cockpit, the upper external fuselage spars transition to internal spars. The upper spars were put on the outside of the aircraft through the region of the cockpits so that they wouldn’t reduce shoulder room, which is already quite limited.

Ewwwww! :face_vomiting: smh

jk

Fly what you like, that’s why it’s there…

Totally .

if the dev is reading comments I’d love to see a couple of things…

  1. TDS/PMS50 integration
  2. Click spot to hide the modern radio/transponder/GPS.

The G3X version is a nice addition but it’s a bit too full on for me. I’d love to still be able to have the classic avionics but some modern conveniences.

Unlike some devs, A1R has the nice balance of giving us a lovely classic aircraft but also remembered we are flying in a modern sim not in the 1930s.

I’d love to be able to just sit in the aircraft whilst it flies itself (co pilot) and admire as the scenery goes past and still seeing a classic cockpit.

Having the com/transponder also gives us the ability to use Vatsim and SayIntentions/BeyondATC which is fantastic addition.

with the PMS50 popup it may still be possible to use the autopilot with the classic version even if it’s not shown. If anyone has the premium version and can try it…I’d most appreciate it.

great work on this…giving these options would make it almost perfect.

not purchased yet but it’s certainly high up on my classic aircraft list.

I wish the dev would offer a trial, either free or low price. I have been burnt a couple of times by addon aircraft that either had major problems or I really didn’t like the flight model. I find it very difficult now to buy an aircraft knowing that it couldgo straight in the hanger after a couple of tries when the trial system is there.

Haha I know. There are some newer kits of this plane (or really similar though irl) - so it wouldn’t be out of the question to fly some glass.

Well, this Dev has been around a long time. They have aircraft in FSX and P3D. I know what you mean about taking chances; I’ve bought too many lemons in the last couple of months. This one is top notch. The flight model is excellent. There’s no AP, but it’s nice and stable in flight. The sounds are excellent, and the textures are gorgeous. This isn’t one of those aircraft that come out half-baked and you wait for it to get better.

I am sure this one is excellent quality. So far all the reports are good. And I really like to see an old school dev embrace the new 2024 system and even make it career compatible. It is just the flight model that concerns me as that can be personal. You may like it whereas I may not. I have the Klemm 25 and really like it other than I find it difficult to trim into anything like stability. It just seems to float up and down. It may be realistic due to its glider shape but it makes it tiring to fly and I usually choose Ants TM instead.

As the marketplace offers a trial system I wish it would become standard for devs.

I may still take a chance on the Ryan as everything else looks superb.

Some history on the Menasco engine.

LOD could be better - large parts of the plane like wings vanish too early.

Does this one use nonstandard controls like the ST-A does? On the ST-A, there’s no way to bind the control to advance/retard the spark timing, which is annoying enough that I have hardly flown it at all. I know I could just use a binding program, but I don’t want to.

Nothing like that. Just throttle up and go.

It’s really nice. Just behaviour on flots could be improved. Reminds me a bit of MSFS2020.
