Aeroplane Heaven Hawker Hurricane Mk.I Released

Could well be …I am used to flying gliders so not an engine sound expert

…anyway, still a great product …and a bargain to

That seems to be the consensus so far, we’ll look into it further. Perhaps the mics that were used didn’t capture the low end quite enough for most people’s tastes.

Thanks!

Seeking a bit of assistance here: It would seem that the manifold pressure (“boost”) on this aeroplane increases as she climbs; this is contrary to what one would expect. I am wondering if the logic associated with the boost gauge has been inadvertently reversed. I had considered that this could be associated with the supercharger, but if it is, it’s a strange way to model it since it should kick in automatically at a specific pressure altitude, or when the pilot “pulls the tit”. Instead, MAP slowly rises in a linear manner as altitude increases; exactly the opposite of what one would expect. Would someone consider doing a quick check on this before I bring this to AH attention?
Other than pretty much this one issue, this is a beautiful add-on and possibly the best AH has done for MSFS.

The sounds are superb-

Picked it up last night and just managed a first flight.

General impression - good, with some rough edges. Think it has the potential to become really enjoyable with just a couple of tweaks.

I didn’t see the problems that AvAngel called out in her review. All the textures loaded and the right brake worked perfectly. I’m wondering if there aren’t some issues with files not being installed because of filemame length restrictions if you’re copying to the community folder. I got a couple of prompts about files that couldn’t be copied - one referred to “caucasian female,” which I think is associated with one of the pilot avatars. I’ve had that problem with repaints in the past but never with a full aircraft file. To be safe, I used my usual workaround - I unzipped the file to a desktop folder, then copied it into MS Addon Linker. Seemed to work perfectly - no more prompts about file copying and all the liveries showed up. Something to look at if you’re having similar issues.

Overall, think it flies nicely and seems characteristic of what I’ve read about and seen of the Hurricane - relatively benign on takeoff and landing, no pronounced swing, well behaved in cruise. Pitch is a little sensitive and stalls led to a sharp left wing drop and incipient spin. Dave Hadfield’s videos don’t show as sharp a spin, but he was flying a later mark.

Minor niggles - the rudder trim (indicator and actual trim setting) seems to be reversed. On R4118 UP-W restored, the canopy showed as closed in external view even when it was open in the cockpit. Might be particular to that livery - the Free French paint was fine in that regard. I haven’t tested the others.

Sounds are excellent overall. Side note to @TyFighter3910 - you can add me to the list of those asking for a little more detail in the interior engine sound - not sure it needs more bass, maybe some more prominent or higher-resolution rattling. It’s hard to know what’s authentic - the Merlin in the Mk. I Hurricane wasn’t the same one as in the P-51, and sources like YouTube videos are colored by the recording circumstances and the kind of microphone used. I’ve spend a lot of time with the Dave Hadfield videos like this one - maybe useful at least as a reference for user expectations. Some more prominent ambient sounds - for switches, the canopy slide, things like that - might help add a little more atmosphere. Really liked the wind sound in flight.

Based on this quick exposure, I’d say it’s more polished than the P-47 (which isn’t bad - I’ve flown it a couple of times, need to post some comments in that thread). AT $28.99 USD, it’s also better value than the P-47. Out of the gate, it’s not on the level of a Flying Iron or GotFriends release - doesn’t yet have the polish (I flew the Wildcat the other day and was enjoying watching the cowl flaps vibrate in the slipstream - things like that add a lot to immersion). But with some patching, could become a favorite,

It’s nice to have a Hurricane.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the insight and I appreciate the detailed feedback!

The rudder trim is reversed if you use the Asobo keyboard commands for rudder trim- if you use the mouse to turn the rudder trim wheel in the cockpit, the trim works correctly. Also, there are liveries that show the canopy closed externally when it is open in side the cockpit, but only when viewed at certain exterior angles. Could I ask you to refer to my thread above regarding manifold pressure and share your findings? I need to confirm this before I correspond with AH- I want to get it right and not trouble them unnecessarily. Thank you in advance- excellent review BTW :+1:

With regard to the sound of the engine while in the cockpit, I would say it’s great when you have the canopy open.. just a little flat when the canopy is closed. Other than that though, it sounds great. I just flew down from RAF Conningsby to Duxford with the canopy open and a big grin on my face.

I did also notice that the default head position in VR sits just outside the right of the cockpit.

You must have returned my aircraft …I flew from Duxford to Conningsby last night!

“VR sits just outside the right of the cockpit” - ups :(. I fly only in VR.

I felt Belgian textures were missing, so here you go:

I’ll check next flight - probably sometime tomorrow. Didn’t get above 5,000 ft. MSL on this one, so didn’t see any change in boost. But a question - wasn’t the Merlin II in the Hurricane Mk. I supercharged? In this chart - for an aircraft with a 2-speed prop, so admittedly not apples-to-apples - full throttle height is given as 17,500 ft., so I’m not sure there’d be any boost degredation below that altitude. But I’m open to being corrected - don’t know the Hurricane nearly as well as the Spitfire.

Will aim to take it above that altitude and see what happens.

About the rudder trim - for me it was reversed when using the keyboard bindings on my HOTAS. Didn’t try using the keyboard commands directly - I’ll have a look at that too.

Glad you liked the mini-review!

In all the videos I have seen, including the official trailer, the left aileron appears a different texture/material from the rest of the wing. Are others seeing this or is it just some unlucky anomaly with the videos?

you’re right, the comp files are different for the wings

nice. That was fast!

Thanks for confirming. Should be an easy fix then. Surprised it was released like this though.

the tail has odd reflections as well, as you can see in my last shot, working on a cure

Performance for this is off the scale it accelerates quicker than an f16 it left the ground in around 1.5 seconds and i managed a vertical climb to 6000 feet with gear down and 4 boost which isn’t even maximum even a spit cannot do that

Hi all,
I immediatly purchased the Hurricane and first impressions are good.
I noticed little bugs on some liveries :

  • Quick fasteners (aka “Dzus fasteners”) are not textured on white Hurricane “Clay” and appears pink.
  • Browning 0.303 and red doped guns covers on both leading edges are missing, only on Trop RAAF (V7476), SAAF (Yellow J, s/n 284), Free French (Z4426).
    Thanks for reading
