Allow Pilot to Change Currently Selected Flight Aircraft using Walkabout Mode

A few days ago, I was operating an Islander flight (Loganair) from Westray/Papa Westray to Kirkwall, and upon landing noticed a company ATR (FSLTL) parked on the apron. I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be great if I could take advantage of FS2024’s walkaround feature to somehow exit the Islander, walk across the tarmac (or through the terminal) and hop into the ATR to operate the next flight Kirkwall-Edinburgh?”

Has this feature ever been discussed, where the aircraft required for the next leg of your journey is parked at your destination, ready for an onward flight? This would be a great addition, parking next to the Asobo ATR in Loganair colours, then being able to take your avatar over to it, hop in, and continue flying!

That will be a feature in the next version of the sim: Grand Theft Airplane.

Have a look at this wish:

Not quite the same as what you are asking for, but the wish was created in 2020 before walkabout in 2024 was known.

I think it wold be a very well-received feature. I’m no developer but in multiplayer we can see other players’ aircraft, so surely it wouldn’t take too much to implement? It would certainly add a new dimension to the walkaround feature!

Hmm - I think this would require a ton of work, IMO (but I’m no developer).
I could convert this topic into a wishlist item, is you like.
I’d also rename the topic to:
Allow Pilot to Change Currently Selected Flight Aircraft using Walkabout Mode.

Yes, that would be great. Cheers. I think it would be of interest to many simmers.

Change completed :slightly_smiling_face:
(Don’t forget to vote for your own topic)

There was/is a mod called “Where Are My Aircraft” by the developer LORBI-SI ( AxisAndOhs fame), that allowed this in FSX, P3D and I think FS2020 (not sure if it worked very well though in FS2020 after A couple of SU’s). :sad_but_relieved_face:

In the feature list it says, “You can choose to fly an aircraft through the WAMA dialog or directly in the simulator by walking or driving up to the plane”. I had this mod and it was an immersive experience even back then! You’ve got my vote!! :white_check_mark:

If LORBI can do it as a one-man developer team, surely MS with it’s resources can? :hammer_and_wrench:

Click for info about the prototype of WAMA for the current Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS 2020)

Starting with version 1.22 the WAMA download contains a prototype of WAMA for the current Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS 2020). Only the main features of WAMA will work with this prototype, since MSFS is currently unable to support all functionality that was possible with P3D. At the moment we cannot provide support for this prototype, as the simulator is still in constant development.

“Where are my aircraft?” (WAMA)

The “WhereAreMyAircraft” application (WAMA for short) remembers where you left all your aircraft in the simulator world. When connected, it will display all your parked aircraft in the simulator where you left them when you get close to their position.

Feature list:

  • WAMA keeps a database of all places and aircraft types, saved manually or automatically
  • All these aircraft are displayed in the simulator too
  • You can view all positions in Google Earth
  • You can choose to fly an aircraft through the WAMA dialog or directly in the simulator by walking or driving up to the plane
  • You can exchange the parked aircraft models for different ones, for example leight-weight AI models
  • To initially build up the database, you can import your saved flights.

I voted for this. Would be a great feature. I’m imagining a hangar full of your favorite aircraft in which you can walk out to it and hop in whatever plane you want. When you’re done flying you can taxi back in to your hangar spot and hop out, and the plane will stay where you left it the next time you fly.

I do think this would be a large change though.

FYI, There is a freeware mod that now allows you to do this (in beta at time of posting this):

Edit: I’ve tried the beta & it does work!

I haven’t tried it yet, but thanks for highlighting this mod.:star:

The author of the mod is obviously very talented, and I thank them also for sharing that brilliance with us.:folded_hands:
