AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) + MSFS2020

DDU used, AMD cleaner used… 24.1.1 desinstalled, gone to 23.30… nothing better ok… DDU again then 23.40, nothing more. DDU again then 24.1.1 again… always same sh*t. That’s sucks

For me I think the sheer number of other executables running is confusing it. In the adrenaline overlay it will show Fenix.exe or couatl64 (GSX pro) instead of FlightSimulator.exe. Sometimes it works and sometimes not but if the adrenaline ui is confused I’m not sure there’s another way to tell whether it’s working or not

Has anyone seen the frame generation option constantly enable and disable itself about every second? It cycles constantly when the game monitor is active.

This appears where the “Anti Lag” option is shown.

In the release notes it does say the driver will disable AFMF during fast paced screens. Not sure how fast is fast though!

  • AFMF preserves image quality by dynamically disabling frame generation during fast visual motion.

What’s the deal with AFMF and display refresh rate?

Is a high refresh rate required to use this technology to avoid screen tearing?

Based on what I’ve experienced on my 60Hz monitor and heard from someone else that tested a few things for me on a high refresh monitor in the preview driver thread, that’s my thinking. They recommend maintaining at least 60Hz native to avoid noticeable artifacts, which would mean needing a 120Hz or better monitor to make reliable use of it.

I have a 144Hz 3440x1440 LG wide screen, and just sitting on the runway with a static view, I see the constant cycling of the disabling of AFMF message in the Radeon overlay.

If I also turn on the Xbox game bar overlay to check frame rate, the screen dims briefly every time the frame generation error shows.

Obviously something isn’t working properly for me. I do have a Tobii, but I completely disabled it and the same thing still happens.

I’ve just turned off AFMF now as it’s not at all reliable.

144Hz monitor here, locked at 120Hz. Still relatively unimpressed by AFMF due to all this tearing and blurriness, especially when using head tracking when camera motion is non-stop. I wish AFMF could kick in only in low fps situations, e.g. below 30fps or so, if only to eliminate those 1% fps issues.

Found this video which I thought would be helpful to understand AFMF. Most likely it’s the same for Nvidia.

AFMF explained

Am I just daft? I have AFMF enabled in the global Gaming → Graphics menu.

I have seen people are able to the go to Gaming → Games and then also set it on a per-game basis. Why do I not see that option here?

You sure you have Adrenalin v24.1.1?

Yes, confirmed.

Perhaps it’s because you have a 6000 series gpu?

Are per-game settings only available on 7xxx series?

I know AFMF works fine as I just used it benchmarking Red Dead Redemption 2. Although even with RDR2, there is no per-game setting either.

No, I have a 6650 xt and I have AFMF set only for MSFS. The screen you show doesn’t look like mine, though. My computer is down now but I’ll check tomorrow.

Hi, perhaps because your “Average FPS” is too low depending AMD requirements (60 FPS minimum to activate AFMF I think they said… if I’m not wrong)

I don’t think it’s that. If I try this in RDR2, where I can get 100fps native, there still are no per-game settings showing in the Gaming → Games menu.

I also don’t think 60fps is a hard limit that prevents you from turning it on. I think that was just a “recommended” minimum (which is kind of silly for what most people want from frame generation, I think).

I just did a full DDU on my AMD drivers and reinstalled 24.1.1, still no per-game options. Oh well. :person_shrugging: Not the end of the world.

Strange that it doesn’t show per game. Did it show when selecting global?

I don’t believe any unique per-game option has been shown on any screen.

My system does NOT like the AMD Adrenaline utility when playing MSFS. If I try to open the AMD application during a flight, the AMD GUI doesn’t appear, I start to get periodic stutters in MSFS, and I have to go into task manager and kill some external AMD event logger process to get the stutters to stop.

I wonder if any of this is due to my dual monitor setup. I have “Monitor 1” which is my main monitor with all of my apps and browser running. “Monitor 2” is my LG wide screen monitor where only MSFS runs. Monitor 1 is running off my Intel 13600K integrated graphics (connected to the motherboard HDMI port) and Monitor 2 is connected to the RX 6800XT with DisplayPort.

Perhaps the AMD app has a hard time figuring out what to do on what monitor? Just pure speculation.

There is not only FMF missing in your driver settings, several more options are also not showing in your screenshot (e.g. Radeon Chill).
If I was you I’d just give it a try with only 1 monitor connected and see how the driver reacts.
