[ANNOUNCEMENT] JRF-6 Goose | Big Radials

Windows worked… Amending review to get rid of that and the skis thing (which I have noticed)

you really have to hold the button down UNTIL they catch (if they havent caught after 10 sec, then something is worng).

Also, priming via throttles, makes sure you do it smoothly, and leave them at full for say 1 second or two.

OK… Gonna try that now… Thank you for your help. Let’s see what happens.

EDIT: IT WORKED!!! It was just me being too careful with not pressing the starter too long initially. But yes, it works… I am happy! Sounds so awesome with windows open!

I have edited out things I thought were issues in my initial post so that if anyone is reading it for the first time, they don’t come across non-issues.

MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY!!!

I have decided to abuse the engine.

Tragedy averted… THIS is why seaplanes are the best!

I have joined this gaggle of geese  who wants to do this historic flight in group mode?

So happy to see the Goose leave the nest again! Fantastic effort by the Big Radials team, congrats! A few minor things I’ve noticed thus far:

  • Wobble pump: one pump gets the pressure up to about 2.5 psi, further pumping doesn’t raise the pressure. Starts and runs OK at this pressure though.
  • Starters will crank the engines over with batteries off.
  • Starter cranking sound isn’t present when using a hardware button mapped to SET_STARTERn_HELD.
  • The anchor doesn’t hold the aircraft in place if the engines are idling.
  • With the back doors open, it’s difficult to close them from inside the plane. You sort of have to lean out of the plane to see the door handle in order to click it. Which is probably what you need to do on the actual aircraft, so props for realism.
  • I think there might be a couple of other audio anomalies, but I’ve not pinned them down yet.

Zero luck getting the engines to start from cold and dark here.

I don’t understand what is meant by “emergency ignition switch ON” in the checklist. The emergency ignition switch can only be pulled out to turn it off. On appears to be the default position.

Wobble pump only raises fuel pressure to 2.5PSI even if you yank on it all day, and the manual says you need 3-4PSI for startup.

I was in the same boat… You just need to hold the starter for up to 10 seconds. Have you pumped the throttle 4-5 times after the wobble pump? You have to prime the engine with the throttle as well. I did notice that the wobble pump only raises fuel pressure to 2.5 tops as well. That doesn’t prevent a start for me though.

I’ve read the preceding posts. I can hold it down for a minute with no result.

What are you saying? Just push the throttle forward and pull it back a few times?

Yes… Make sure both fuel cutoff switches are on as well. Prop full forward. Mixture full rich… Throttle all the way forward (leave forward for 1 second then move back to idle, repeat 5 times to prime engine).

Actually, once is enough, or non if the outside temp is higher than 20 degrees celsius.

Mixture full rich

Manual says mixture idle cut-off until the engine catches.

I know. I am gonna try it from idle next time. I CAN tell you that it starts if you have it full rich.

Just wanted to report that engine start works exactly as described in the manual - mixture is moved to full rich only after engine catches. It can also be started with propellers fully decreased. I actually REALLY love that the start isn’t instant and it takes a few turns for it to catch on. Every time I watch a real radial engine start it takes time and isn’t instant. So I hope Big Radials keeps the amount of time required to hold the starter exactly as it is, it’s WAY more satisfying and immersive this way.

thanks for your review. Informative as always.

However I must say I am not all too impressed by the interior. It looks a little behind the times to me and lacking detail. But maybe I have become a little spoiled by the likes of Carenado and Asobo. Those interiors look much more real IMHO.

Love the attention to detail with the bow wave and the systems, failures etc.

Does not match my experience. Can’t get a start unless the mixture is at rich. Would love to see someone record a video showing the sequence of actions to do it the “by the book” way.

Just bought and quick flight - very fun. I love the addition of anchors, fishing stools etc…just makes it seem more satisfying to land on a lake.

Question: am I able to customise the default cockpit view? I know this bird is primarily VFR but I would like to be able to have the camera zoomed out/tilted down a tiny bit so I can see the airspeed and VS gauges.

This is not a criticism of this plane as I notice the same thing in the JF Arrow, for example…just never got around to figuring out how to alter the default view.

Thanks BigRadials - great stuff

Just did my first flight and wow what a machine. I absolutely love it and the external lod on the cockpit etc is AMAZING! Lands better than any of my water craft and the views! Sound is FANTASTICO! Plane feels heavy on the ground and everything. Very nice job! Really love the Anchor and fishing stool too!

We’re considering it but honestly we had so few sales of the P40 through them that it wasn’t worth the effort.
