Backwards compatibility promises?

I’m confused. The developers made a massive point about backwards compatibility and how we should be able to drop 2020 content in and it will work out of the box.

Was this just a blatant untested lie? The majority of developers are reporting that it simply isn’t the case and add ons don’t work in 2024 at all.

Why were we told something that was clearly not true?

You mean you haven’t been here for the last 4 years?! That’s what Asobo are good at. I always compare them to politcians. Half they time they look dumbfounded in those dev Q&A when people are posing the same question over and over and over and over again. I can’t say I am surpised with this release, however I am still slightly taken aback by the magnitude of the mess. It’s enough to ruin the whole franchises reputation. It’ll take them years to recover from this mess.

There was an announcement about the delays in this process, have a read here before losing the rag:

This doesn’t change that they told us. They said you could copy and paste anything from 2020 into 2024 and it would work. This simply isn’t the case.

Both PMDG and parallel 42 have reported that stuff just doesn’t work in 2024.

So why did Asobo sell us a game based on promises that are clearly a lie?

Well if you don’t like what the post I liked said then maybe you should write to Asobo.

I am assuming that you did read it:

Backwards Compatibility (PC & Xbox Series X|S)

  • Over 7,790 add-ons from the MSFS 2020 in-sim marketplace have been successfully converted to MSFS 2024, but we recently discovered that some items are incompatible and can block MSFS 2024 from loading altogether. As you can imagine, given the variety of content that has been created and the creative coding in certain offerings, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to backwards compatibility. Our team is performing a previously not planned validation step of checking whether add-ons can be successfully loaded in the simulator, and thus far almost 4,000 items have been verified.
    • This work is in progress and will continue for the coming days and we ask for your patience during this process.

Though maybe not.

Almost all my aircraft and sceneries have worked straight away and only a couple have small issues but nothing preventing them being used just fine. So no, not a lie.

Count the number of all developers, then count the “majority” you speak of. Is it truly a “majority”? I bet it isn’t. It may probably the “majority” you’ve heard from but someone not complaining about an issue is probably not having an issue. You won’t hear from them as much.

Maybe they should have put a link to that on the store page when people were ordering. There might be less rag loss.

I’ve already decided that when it’s time for my next hardware upgrade cycle (2-3 years time) it WON’T be aimed at FS2028, but their competition.

Competition is good.

Well I think you need to provide evidence that that actually said that. To my memory the exact opposite was the case. …

I find it hard to believe that ANY company would guarantee that all (even very complex) addons will fit seamlessly into brand new product.

They mentioned multiple times, even by Jorg on the dev streams, that content could be copy and pasted into 2024 and would run in a compatibility mode. This isn’t the case.

Not sure why I’d make it up..:

OK - I found the actual thing I remembered, it wasn’t the Grand Canyon thingie so I will edit that out. Here is the actual information from the lady’s mouth which clearly shows that ported content will have to be tested and signed off.

It does go on to say that UPDATES to the content might be paid for.

I’m not talking about marketplace. So what you’ve provided is irrelevant.

They mentioned MULTIPLE times that NON marketplace content could be dropped into 2024 and would work in a 2020 compatibility mode.

Not sure why you’re so determined to defend them when this launch has been a disaster.

OK you chose what you want. The non-marketplace stuff was covered in Georg’s apology for stuff not being transferred yet.

You feel free to keep on bashing about that, I’ll complain about other stuff, like only one of my MFDs being recognised in 2024, none of my joysticks having default assignments, the server loading times being just stupid and totally undermining the idea of a thin client and stream as needed, etc. etc.

So the five minutes it is taking the server to decide to load my flight location (with no internet traffic) gives me loads of time to complain about other stuff.

I’m running PMDG’s 737 and 777 without issue on 2024 so I’m not sure where you are getting that from.

What PMDG said is that they didn’t know how much work they would have to do in order to make their 737 and 777 run while utilizing all of the new features 2024 has to offer until they were able to start running it on the sim for themselves. They both currently work fine in 2024, but aren’t leveraging the new 2024 features.

Once PMDG and others have done that analysis, they will offer either a free upgrade to the full 2024 version of the uplift is light, otherwise it will be a paid upgrade if the work ends up being more than a simple code fix.

Where I’m getting it from? PMDG have literally said it doesn’t work

Someone just sent me the link to their post so apologies. It’s weird because I’ve gotten it to work fine on mine. The only issue I’m having is the initial start up makes it look like the plane is in the ground, then after a few seconds once it loads, it works pretty much fine for me after that. I guess I’ll have to do more testing to see if anything breaks as I’m flying.

Honestly, the whole ‘he said, she said’ discussion is pointless. Because the fact remains that compatibility is simply not a thing that can be guaranteed by ANY party.

2020 was a huge moving target for developers. It took a while for things to settle down. So with the new sim, that’s going to be the situation for a while going forward. Devs will need a minute to get updates out the door, even if it’s just minor things like reworking install paths for a proper experience.

If anyone thought that you could just install all your add-ons and have them working on day one… well… that’s on you for believing in the impossible.

Pmdg airliners are not working at all for me on Xbox. Microsoft have said (post launch) that large planes won’t work with large airports. I can only get the 737 to load in sometimes and when I do it’s broken with yokes trusted to the side and non working controls.

What I don’t like is how our experience is now compared with what we were told BEFORE LAUNCH when we were all preordering. Things like most of our existing aircraft will just work, we will be able to download content locally if we want etc.

It’s the third day and I’ve restarted countless times and I still don’t even have all my aircraft showing up in the 2024 aircraft selection.

Out of the box, All my 6 orbx airports work fine, p42-juice-goose( rudder works as acceleration/brake) using Addon Linker to save space on C drive.

We have seen some partial success, but major parts of the aircraft just can’t work because the sim modules have changed. The module that handles communications internal and external, for example, and that we use to link the tablet to the aircraft is different. As soon as the SDK covers those changes, we can adapt.

The DC6, however (my favorite PMDG product), works! That is most likely because it is not built on the latest developments. We always try to use the latest modules by Asobo, and sometimes, that can hurt.
