Backwards compatibility promises?

Thanks for the update. Does this mean we can expect the DC-6 to get a 2024 installer sooner than the others?

We need a bit more time to fully test, but so far it looks good. Would be nice to have at least one compatible aircraft!

Same here … SURE there are exceptions … but lots of the airports work perfectly fine

Just installend EHAM. No problems so far …. Except a tree here and there in the grass between the taxiways.

Complex aircraft are a no go … thats a shame but will follow soon. Unfortunately that will mean money milking for updates i am afraid.

For now … use FS2024 for career mode and beautifull VFR fying all over the world … and activities like the picture thing for example.

FS2020 for the IFR A to B PMDG stuff

I must say … today during the day not one “bandwith” message an realy beautiful FS2024 VFR flying and career.

Then i started fs2020 and it already is looking “bad” with one day of good streaming FS2024 experience :+1::partying_face:

No!
They ever said everthing would be compatible, ever.
Most
was always the word they used and as you can read, they are working on it.

Happy to hear that, the DC-6 is by far my favorite PMDG product as well.

More generally, I assumed that there would be plenty of addons that work, plenty that sort of work but need optimizing, and some that just won’t work.

I didn’t find it reasonable to assume everything would work flawlessly.

They did not. If you’re certain, by all means provide a link.

For reference, they said “most” things would work. No one ever offers guarantees these days… you should know this.

I’m sure there will be something in the previews/Dev Q&A, but if it was not, why the need to make a sudden announcement

"Over 7,790 add-ons from the MSFS 2020 in-sim marketplace have been successfully converted to MSFS 2024, but we recently discovered that some items are incompatible and can block MSFS 2024 from loading altogether. […] Our team is performing a previously not planned validation step of checking whether add-ons can be successfully loaded in the simulator, and thus far almost 4,000 items have been verified. " (emphasis mine)
Source

Now, with those 7790 expected addons, I opened the latest Developer Update where it lists " 4,991 products (+24) have already been released in 3rd party stores and the in-sim marketplace"

Now, I’m not sure where lies the discrepancy between 4991 released producs on 14th and 7790 expected - but my reading heavily implies they expected it all to work.

Edit: "We get some clarity on backward compatibility. Most add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator will work on MSFS 2024 out of the box. The only exceptions are add-ons influencing biomes, modification to the UI, and some more unusual add-ons. "

So yes - you are correct - ‘most’ it is.

This is an extract from the June 5 Q&A. The question was asking about the 2024 SDK but the response touched on backwards compatibility.

[Jorg] For sure. So first off, Backwards compatibility is something we said we’re doing. So we are, you know, we have some people like Gaya that work with us basically as a first party developer and we’re using them to test the tools, make sure that everything works. It’s hunky dory and they give us feedback and not, I would say not everything was perfect. So we’re still, the team is still working on making sure that there’s no impact because the whole point of backwards compatibility is that you don’t actually have to do anything. It’ll just move over. So I think it’s massive progress was made.

So the key comments by Jorg that made people think that 2020 content would just work in 2024 is

Its comments like these that raised the expectation that 2020 content would just work in 2024. Jorg’s words were “It’ll just move over”. Any reasonable person would assume that Jorg’s comments mean that 2020 content will work in 2024. And I’m sure many purchases of 2024 were made based on the premise that 2020 content will “just move over”.

From my own perspective I have found that majority of liveries I have created and published for 2020, do not work in 2024 without modification. Updating them is a massive task.

Thanks for that! I had issues searching back that far in the forums and lots of irrelevant things came up. It seems that around October it changed to ‘most things’

They DID state “virually everything” will work.
And yes, what a bold statement that is, was.

Most third party scenery is working for me except in the cases of:

  • Taxiing goes over grassy areas and isn’t mapped correctly for third party airports
  • The terrain bleeds through over the pre-fabricated / models from the add-on

For planes:

  • DC Designs Concorde seems to be working
  • Just Flight Piper Arrow IV seems to be working
  • BN2 Islander cannot get off the ground

Microsoft counts XBox and PC as two separate products. Not all PC products are on the XBox store.

Ahah! Thanks.
4,386 products on PC (+41) and 4,153 on Xbox (+42).” is a lot closer (but over) to 7000.

But as @BilingualHarp7 dug up - in June was the backwards compatibility in the most common sense with little to no caviats. I’m gonna put this in promises made, promises broken category, even thought there was backtrack in October and launch day update.

To be perfectly honest, I would have been fine with no 2020 content until 2024 marketplace was available and had the option to pick which of my past content I want available to me - as some of the content I do not want on my sim anymore.

I believe the did not try to ingest livery products. I have over 1800 addons from 2020 in the Marketplace. I’m a sucker, when there is a $1.99 cent sale, I say “Sure, why not” without even really looking at it. I have 1485 products in My Library, but not one of them is a livery product. So take the PC and XBox numbers, add them up, but then subtract out the livery products, and you will probably get to 7000

Maybe I’m lucky but most of my stuff is working fine. The only issues I’m seeing are a few minor scenery issues at airports and some jetways acting really weird (which usually goes away as you get closer, so might be more of an LOD problem). I’ve been running the 737 for some quick flying around but haven’t fully tested, but PMDG says it doesn’t work so I guess I just haven’t run into the areas where it doesn’t work.

I’d assume these things will be fixed for the 2020 compatible items and be followed by 2024 upgrades for a fee to guarantee full compatibility and take advantage of all the new features. So we’ll have two versions of many of the items out there.

There’s a compatibility list here:

As you can see, none of Just Flught’s stuff works yet which isa great shame.

Just so everyone understands, this compatibility list is not official ms/asobo, as even mentioned in the article.

It is from fselite.

Guaranteed someone will not read it fully and then blow a gasket or two.

It’s a useless list. I see a couple things right off that say “no” but work just fine.

If you see stuff that is wrong, let them know. I did and they updated the status of the item so it correctly reflected its operational status in 2024.

That’s the silly thing tho, they’re claiming nothing works when almost everything works (that I’ve tried). Plus the list is so small, only a tiny fraction of addons are listed. It’s just a useless list. Best to just throw it in and try for yourself imo.
