Bad performance around KMSP area

I’ve always had issues flying into KMSP. Once I get around 6000 ft or lower, the game turn into a slideshow at maybe 1 FPS. I do not have this issue at any other airport. My computer is powerful with an i9 12th gen, 32 GB of DDR5, and a 3080 graphics card. I also have a 20 GB pre-cache configured in the game.

I typically run the game at Ultra and have zero problems. When I get into this state around the KMSP area, I tried turning it down to Low. This somewhat helped and I was able to land, but the FPS was still very bad. Today when I took off from KMSP, I had good performance on the ground, but when I took off, FPS went down until I was above about 6000 ft. It doesn’t matter day or night. It doesn’t matter what plane I fly.

Does anyone have any ideas why I would be having issues just around the KMSP area?

I have flown to KMSP a few times without the problem you describe. From which direction are you approaching the airport? Are you using any particular approach procedures? Any particular flight plans you use? (If so, perhaps you could link one so I or others could try it and see if they get the same behavior).

It didn’t seem to make a difference which flight plan I used. But I was doing KDEN - KMSP (CHUWY1 CHUWY KD75A SSWAN TORGY3) landing on 30R. I also flew KMSP - KDTW (COULT7 DLL PORZL RKCTY2) taking off on 30L.

I’ll give them a try and see if I have the same result.

I tried flying out of KMSP per COULT7 DLL PORZL RKCTY2.

I have my MSFS capped at 30 fps. Climbing out of 30L and approaching 4500 ft, things started slowing down. I was heading straight out on 30L. I turned around to get on the plan and continued climbing to 6000 ft, where I leveled off. I had 11-14 fps. I turned off Photogrammetry and was quickly back to 30 fps! I’d say there is something wrong with the photogrammetry (Although I didn’t think there was any photogrammetry around MSP).

I think a bug report is in order, but maybe some other flights should be made to try to narrow things down, if possible. Have you determined, for example, at what distance away from KMSP things return to normal or does it continue forever after you encounter the slowdown? It would be nice if we could narrow it down some before officially reporting it.

Update: I spoke too soon. As soon as I returned to the simulator to continue the flight (after writing this), fps was back down to around 15 fps, a little better but not much. I’ll continue the flightand see what happens.

Do You use any AI add-ons?
I remember seeing something about use of An Endeavor CRJ 700 or 900 model - can’t remember which maker - and there would be plenty of those around MSP.

I’m using the Pmdg 737-900er, fsrealistc, and fsltl. I don’t have an exact altitude that it happens at. It seemed like it started around 6000ft all the way to the ground. I didn’t try turning off photogrammetry. I’ll do some more experiments and report back.

Things went back to 30 fps at 6000 ft when about 10-12 nm away from the airport. I was flying SE in the C208. My computer specs: 5600x / rx 6650 xt / 32 gb.

Forget my initial thought about photogrammetry! I think the quick jump in fps was only temporary when returning to flight.

I’m wondering if it could be related to some malformed object in the scenery? I’m not sure how to check that kind of thing out but it seems I remember reading someone finding that type of thing in the sim at some other location. My settings are almost all on High with Terrain LOD = 100 and Objects LOD = 100. Found I was running in Windowed mode, though, which slows me down some. I’ve turned it back to Full Screen and will fly back to KMSP to see what happens.

Update: OK, now I’m really confused. I just flew over the airport and no slowdown at all. I’m going to try the takeoff again.

So I took off from 30L with no flight plan loaded and just headed straight out then turned north, climbing to 6,000 ft. This time there was no slowdown. I also turned around and headed back the airport with no slowdown. I’ll keep trying different scenarios, too.

Just a thought: You said you use FSLTL. I wonder if as you approach KMSP the increase in traffic is causing your slowdown? You might try things with and without FSLTL and see if you get the same slowdown. You’ve got a powerful system, though. I’ll try with FSLTL and see what happens.

Update: Tried a second flight from 30L using the same flight plan. Everything remained at 30 fps throughout and I was using FSLTL. I will try approaches in the next couple of days.

I just got done trying some experiments. I took off with the 739 from KSTC airport (just north). Got up to 10000 ft and 250 kts. I flew directly over KMSP on Ultra settings, FSLTL and FSRealistic with not one stutter. I descended to 6000, and did another flyover. Not a stutter. Descended to 3000. Flew over Minneapolis and then St Paul and then came in for a landing on 30R. Not a stutter. I don’t understand, but it looks like more tests are needed.

Edit: I didn’t have a flight plan loaded either.

When I got the bad slowdown originally, I did turn off FSLTL and FSRealistic and it didn’t help much.

I would try deleting the rolling cache file and give it another try. I’ve had this similar issue in the LA area where everything slows down once over the city. And this problem seems to pop up in the threads every so often. :+1:

Here are a couple links that might be helpful. Photogrammetry, deleting the rolling cache and possible solutions to the same or similar problems are mentioned:

Oh I just want to mention that the video I made in that was back when I had this…

i9-10900KF / RTX 3070 / 32 GB DDR4 RAM @ 3200 / SATA III SSD / 2560x1440p @ 75Hz

I’m now running this and I’m not having any stutters at all other than a short one when I spawn in a very dense area and look around with TrackIR. After this is over it doesn’t do it again. I can fly for hours on end without issue…

i9-13900K / RTX 4090 / 64 GB DDR5 RAM @ 5600 / PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 / 5120x1440p @ 240Hz

I would like to note I don’t use a cache.

Just completed a flight in the MSP area and experienced a performance issue that I just don’t have anywhere else. My FPS went from 42 to 17 as I approached and flew over downtown MSP. As soon as I was past it, performance returned to normal. I made the flight again and sure enough it happened again, so I turned off photogrammetry. When I returned to the flight performance was normal again with no FPS drops.

This seems to indicate there is a PG issue in the MSP area. It could be just one building or perhaps a group of buildings or trees, but something is amiss there. Hopefully it will get checked out sometime and sorted.
