Black Square Steam Gauge Overhaul - Cessna 208B Caravan

I was wondering the same, best way if you encounter sever icing condition is to gain altitude and avoid moisture area, reducing the speed may help also

I asked to the dev about this, since last month while flying alaska I tried everything even anticipating a lot without noticeable result, once I got a answer will keep you inform

From watching some videos, I have gathered that these systems are anti-ice, and should be applied before actually getting into contact with the moisture. I think I should check the POH on this one. There is probably a temperature range in between which you have to switch it on.

As a rule of thumb, I would normally aim to have anti icing, separators, etc all on at least 5 minutes prior to penetration and in any temp less than 6 or 7 degrees. That radar certainly helps.

I am glad I am not the only one out there. I mainly fly in Alaska and right now Icing is a b*çch. Sometimes even just taxing to the rwy in PANC has my windshield iced up in minutes and no amount of anti-icing solves the issue.
If anyone has any tips or solutions to this then please let me know.

Did you ever figure this one out? I am struggling with the same issue

on the system.cfg, at

structural_deice_rate= - 0.00128
windshield_deice_rate= - 0.002227

compared to other aircraft cfg, many use higher (like default caravan has 0.25) values and positive, tried with 0.25 it was definitly too strong but windshield deice switch appear to work , trying actually only removing the minus sign “-”
the W / S switch properly clean the windshield from frost, so for those flying a lot in severe icing condition it may be a good workaround
I can’t say how other de frost system affect really this process, I have to do several test and find a way to measure their effectivness

to conclude I m totally newbie on this kind of stuffs maybe it has been set so to simulate a over icing issues due to the de-ice fluid being counter productive if set too late, that s could be why there is a negative value …

asked JD is opinion on this, maybe does he knows other variable or part of the aircraft files affecting the way it works or could he give me more hint
will keep you inform if I found a perfect value working fine with various deicing setting

I have wrecked several Caravans by overspeeding, usually when descending and noticing I have to descent a bit faster, adjust the VS and then …boom. Typically on a long Skypark mission
I have not noticed any warning, neither a system nor any effects on the airframe.
Is this normal? Would an overspeed incident not be accompanied by some noise, rattling, …

I think I might come back a bit on the loud lever and watch IAS. You will get a lot of latitude on the VS if things are happening a bit too quickly, which will keep things sweet. Earlier descents will also help.

Wind noise would definitely increase and as you’re headed “downhill,” you also notice the cabin pressure increasing. But I don’t know of any early-model Caravans that have any sort of stick shaker or aural overspeed warning, unless there’s an aftermarket deal. Goes with the steam gauge territory.

Get FS Realistic

Brings all planes alive for me. It’s my favourite add on and great value considering it applies to ALL aircraft you own now and in the future.

I associate FS Realistic with passengers hooting and clapping on takeoff and landing, which sounds stupid to me. Is there more to it than that?

Hahah. I switch all that silly stuff off. Toilet flushing, sneezing, screaming etc.

Yeah there is a lot more to it than that hehe. There is a free 7 day trial — why not give it a bash and see if you like it?

Honestly, without it now most planes feel so hollow, empty and static. It’s worth it just for the touchdown effects but it particularly fits well with some planes more than others. Really good in Stearman for some reason.

In answer to the issue with the Caravan specifically, when the plane gets to overspeed you will hear additional layers of wind noise, creaking, rattling and the airframe will shake (camera) a bit (all tweak-able, or you can download popular profiles that other players have uploaded for almost every plane).

It adds so much depth and feedback well worth the price IMO.

Yes, whatever happened to that project? Did BS just add the amphib control option for someone else to develop or were they planning on doing it themselves?

I don’t think it s on their plan to develop this, thought in the the manual it was mention they add this lever cause they were aware of 2 people / project for this feature , and added the lever to anticipate and be ready once this mod achieved

Is it possible to have specific effects for specific aeroplanes or is it the same for all?

Yes, each plane can have its own settings. I set old planes to have more squeaking and rattling. It’s a great add on.

Every plane has its own settings saved automatically and associated with the internal name of the plane (see red arrow in example below):

You can load another users shared profiles (yellow arrow) then tweak it from there and it saves your changes for that plane just for you, and loads it automatically next time you use that plane.

Also you can LINK a plane to a profile you already have (if you want the same settings) - then if you change the settings whilst flying ANY plane that uses the linked profile, it changes it for all the planes (so you could set up a generic prop plane one and link that to all relevant planes if you want etc etc). You can then unlink a specific plane to separate it again if you want changes only to apply to that plane.

Or you can COPY FROM an existing planes profile which keeps the settings separate for the plane you’re copying it into (the one you’re sat in at the time), then you can tweak and modify from there without affecting the original profile / plane it came from.

You can share your own ones if you want. I find most planes have at least 1 or 2 pre-made profiles you can download and there is a rating system so you can choose ones that seem more popular (for whatever reason).

There are multiple settings for each sound with a choice of audio clips (for example there are like 8 or so different wind sounds just in the airframe wind noise option, but also different drag effects for spoilers / gear / flaps and so on, so you can mix and match until it sounds appropriate. You can also change the parameters of how the sound is blended.

Then there are sliders for how much camera is affected by turbulence, g-forces, hard landings etc (usually 2 sliders for range amount and smoothness, that kind of thing). Very flexible.

Example of sliders for Engine start sound: top one affects camera movement, bottom one volume and drop down for the sample audio:

As I say, free trial, can’t hurt to try and see for yourself and it can be quite hard to explain. Feel free to DM me if you want any more info as I feel I’m derailing this Caravan thread a bit

My favorite new feature as well is the ability to globally disable sounds from all profiles (sneezing, toilet flushing, crash screaming, clapping for instance all made it to my globally disabled list). The new first person mode is also amazing (though a little wonky as it’s experimental).

Yesterday I was flying from Albany (KALB) to Burlington (KBTV). Halfway I was flying 2000 ft above Lake George. There were some holes in the lake, which I noticed after the warning light OIL PRES LOW began to light up and the Caravan experienced a rather bumpy ride. Problem at that point became that the engine stopped and I had to glide to the nearest airport, none were close enough, luckily just before I was about to hit the ground managed to get the engine back up and running and landed at Glenns Falls.

Could I have done anything wrong or did these holes in the lake cause the Caravan to shut down? I wasn’t overspeeding or too much torque.

I have noticed something similar while flying over remote areas in Canada. Some anomalies in the terrain caused the aircraft to suddenly jolt and slow down ( quite the experience on a motion platform ).
It happened like three times. This was in Bonanza V35.
