Black Square Steam Gauge Overhaul - Cessna 208B Caravan

Did you notice any difference in frame rates between this and the standard caravan?

none at all

I’m a sucker for a white panel.

FlyFromHome dropped a ( fairly long ) preview vid if people want a good look at the Caravan -

I surprised myself by buying this as quickly as I did. I took it on a test short hop from KAVL to KGSP, and then went to Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport instead because it’s a really fun night approach right over town. Very calm, dreamy flight, and I felt very sure of the aircraft I was flying thanks to all of the functionality Black Square added. I wish they could have done sound attenuation when opening the storm windows and have opening doors, both are possible given that the JPL Cessna 152 mod does both to a default aircraft. But overall, I’m pleased with this addon. I can’t say I’m pleased with the price yet. I’d really like simulated wear and tear for this price, a la REP, but I don’t think that’s included? Edit: It says “Engine limit excursions that decrease engine health and will eventually lead to failure.” on the product page, but I don’t think that’s persistent. If it is, I don’t know where one would see the status or reset it. I don’t think there’s a tablet.

thanks for the quick review. but unsure, do the windows and doors open or no? that would make it an instant buy from me

No, they don’t unfortunately. I’d like if they did too. The pilot window opens, but that’s about it. There are no visible passengers, no pitot or engine covers, no chocks, no cargo, and no tablet. It’s just a realistic rendition of the cockpit, systems, and flight dynamics. No floofy stuff. But color me surprised when the Prop Governor test actually worked. Personally, that’s what I like…a plane that simulates how it really works. At the end of the day, it’s just a Caravan; I’m so happy that it’s just a Caravan that works.

i’ll probably still get it since the caravan is a legend. but it’s the little things that make it feel especially alive for me and I can feel totally immersed. little things like opening doors and cargo holds, covers, and internal folding tables. hopefully one day

Check this out - Parked on a sloped ramp, the fuel indicates higher in the low wing. Pretty detailed!

I have not bought the overhaul yet, just want to watch a few more reviews, but that KNS-80 has me very intrigued - a virtual VOR computer with GPS-like RNAVs? Funky!

Not sure why he calls it an “exclusive” “early build” first look, it was released already about 24 hours ago.

Hear hear.

With gauges, all the clocks move at the same speed in the same direction during climb, descent and turns. They’re all ‘as expected’ in a quick glance and for me too that’s just not the same instrument scan I get from a digital display.

I haven’t even had a chance to look at the files that compromise this mod, but does anyone know if you can use other Caravan mods in conjunction with this?

Saw mentioned on discord that you can use the caravan mod with it. Haven’t tested it myself though.

What Captain Vanderburgh really helped to establish was the levels of automation. Strategic use of automation in and of itself is not bad. However, when the use of that automation interferes with basic aircraft control we have a problem. There are times when disconnecting autopilot and autothrottles and hand flying are critical. In fact, a number of aviation incidents can point to the failure of the pilot flying to take manual control as a contributing factor.

However, in today’s Performance Based Airspace, advanced avionics are critical to meeting navigation specifications. We cannot allow our admiration of old-school technology to drive us into a violation. More importantly unlike in 1997 when a Captain could get away with only a casual knowledge of the black box, today you must have a thorough knowledge of avionics installed in your aircraft. Understanding of how avionics work is as important as understanding the powerplant, fuel, or electrical systems.

It has been my unfortunate duty at times to have to inform elder pilots that if they cannot learn PBN and the advanced avionics that support flying in said infrastructure, then they might need to consider retirement.

I’m actually not so sure on that. The “No Pod Mod” might work but I am doubtful because the model changes were so extensive on the interior. The flight dynamics were also revised, so you’d definitely have to merge all the .cfgs (flight_model.cfg, etc). I may test this one myself if I get around to it.

The manual specifically mentions future compatibility with the amphib mods in development (the dev added an amphib gear selector that’s user toggle-able), but I imagine Black Square would still need to do some work to merge his project with the mods.

Was talking about this yesterday to a commercial pilot who’s been using basic sims like this one just to stay … I won’t say “current”, so I guess “aware” on radio nav, because they’ll never really be doing this stuff on the line at any point unless something goes badly wrong.

Things do occasionally go badly wrong - solar activity & jamming are probably bigger causes of GNSS problems than FMS failures but so rare that it’s understandable.

So has anyone been able to bind the Inertia Seperator? There is a spoolup variable that is set but I found none for the lever itself. Also it did not seem to affect torque, at least not that I could tell yesterday.

In the TBM it’s a Bvar.

Hmm I have tried loading the BVars but did not find anything that looked like it. Also I have yet to understand the BVar Mapping in AAO  I just wish things would not be so convoluted for homepit users… Any help is appreciated
