Career Mode Sandbox Option - Make Missions Available as option in Free Fly

I was thinking a mission builder would be good, calculate departure and arrival airports and whether its cargo or passengers etc and calculate the reward by distance, performance etc

Career mode needs to provide a post-flight analysis. More than the sketchy ratings they show now. I want to learn why the engine stopped or the screen suddenly goes dark for no apparent reason, and my reputation is knocked from A down to B. What did I do wrong?
I’m giving up on Career Mode until more details can be provided post-flight.

I’ve been grinding away in Career Mode for the last month and it’s semi-enjoyable despite the numerous amount of bugs. I saw this topic and it got me thinking about this in itself. Having the ability to “create” a mission outside of career mode as a simple mission builder would be a better addition. This would be very useful for people trying out stuff themselves before investing the hours upon hours you need to even get to do some of these in freelance or just getting certs to do them. Also, since I’m operating on the rotary wing side of things currently, having the ability to create practice missions for hoist rescues, sling loads, etc is a great skill to practice and not have to worry about busting up your $32,000,000 CH-47 you spent a month grinding to be able to afford when a glitch sends you into an oil rig tower. Or the ai generated mission tells you to land in a grove of trees, on a 45 degree slope to rescue someone and aren’t given a hoist.

My suggestions:

Mission creation options by category, i.e. crop dusting fixed/rotorwing, SAR fixed/rotary wing, etc.

Allowing users to pick the airport, mission type, and location the objective is located. So we can practice the mission sets or as an example, just enjoy a quick 15 minute hoist practice at your home airport, like what’s done IRL for proficiency.

Moving all aircraft special “features” like cargo hooks, hoists, water scooping, etc to the free flight aircraft. As currently none of them have this option to even practice in free flight. (as of 3 March 2025)

Career mode is enjoyable once you manage to get around the AI generated mission bugs found throughout it. But giving us, the user the option to create our own to practice with, not only eases the annoyance of all these missions you can’t even do after spending all the time grinding because of how bug ridden and horrendous the AI mission creation is. The missions fail due to bugs, you can damage or destroy your multi-million $ aircraft because of. That right there is turning a lot of people off to it. Let alone the time aspect. Career mode needs a large number of improvement, especially for how dynamic rotary wing operations are. Their AI parameters are not cutting it. So that needs a lot of fixing. But for all the other aspects people have listed on top of these suggestions it serves a much better purpose for people to do and enjoy the sim. Having an external ability to create quick missions to practice or enjoy.

Does anyone know how to sort the whishlist by votes? I’d really love to see where this one stands, it was conveniently ignored in the last dev discussions.

@pvaiko1203
This is possible. In Official Microsoft Flight Simulator > Wishlist click on the “Votes” option at the top:

I believe the whishlist shared every Thursday during developer update has “I miss trains” at the bottom with something like 700 votes, so this topic currently just falls outside the weekly dev update list.

This topic was again ignored in the dev stream. Frustrating.

I’ve honestly given up on voting or even raising issues. A massive team of devs has had MONTHS now to fix basic quality of life issues like career mode, stupid turbulence, and ATC that works about half the time, and instead they release a “major update” that fixes a bunch of things that should/could have been fixed in regular patches. It’s a joke at this point. I’m just waiting for them to announce FS2026 is now in the works.

Almost making it above “I miss trains” on the list. Soon, just couple more votes required.

After seeing what Asobo provided us in the su2 flighting re everything unlocked free money up to an amount, apart from heavy certification a400 or inibuilds, this might be very possible down the road

Haven’t had a chance to check out SU2 beta yet, but that sounds exactly what we want, except it will only be in betas. Plus, “This could change in the future.” as the FAQ states it.

Spent now some time with SU2 Beta, and yes, this is almost exactly what we want, a sandbox. A few things are missing, like opening the entire world, let us pick the aircraft for any mission, let us pick the locations for missions, but it is a step into the right direction.

Now we just need a setting in the non-beta to enable this mode.

It is so deliberating to be able to ignore all the stupidity of the algorithm, like just taking off with a helicopter without having to taxi to the end of a runway…

Arguably, the biggest problem with career mode is the that AI mission creation algorithm. If they had some sort of actual body behind some of the mission creation stuff it wouldn’t be as bad as it is. Especially for more dynamic missions like Ag ops, most helicopter missions, and firefighting. The AI algorithm probably works fine for fixed wing cargo ops where you operate from a standard airport and fly routes and such. But helicopters especially, this shows the absolute shortfalls of that whole operation.

20 more votes before this will end up in the wishlist…

Maybe? Maybe?

Considering it is far from it being done, sadly. But if they are actually listening to their customer base, lets hope for the longevity of the platform that they do. Since Career Mode has so many bugs, but has great potential if they fix it. Giving us the option to build a quick mission without the need and headache of dealing with all the issues in career mode and the time that ends up wasted on getting to even be able to participate in doing some of the mission types. A lot of people can play for hours at a time, but not everyone does. So 20-60 minutes a day is all they might have time for. Which if you’re doing grinding in career mode, we all know that can take a LONG time to get to be able to do some of these missions types. Then some of them are so broken and bugged, it’s a super let down. I’ve personally talked to probably a dozen people that after playing into career mode for a few months at most they stop using it because it becomes less enjoyable from all the bugs encountered or just a lack of variation in aircraft and missions. This is probably most apparent in helicopter centered careers.

Cutting all that middle time wasting and AI mission generation…problems out. Makes the sim more easily enjoyable for a quick mission or flight in the mission type you want to fly. Whether it’s a quick SAR hoist practice mission, a quick cargo run into your favorite grass strip, or lobbing a load of water at a wildfire near the hills in your hometown. It makes a lot more sense to be able to do that. Plus it opens the door for 3rd parties to be able to develop other aircraft to do those mission types and not be restricted. You know, allowing the community to expand the use of the sim…it’s what made the platform popular to begin with. This over restrictive nature they’ve left 2024 in is a real gut punch to freeware and I’m sure payware developers trying to make fun stuff, equipment, and other addons. Opening up parts of it like this again, would greatly help the platform I think.

I might be completely wrong here, but here it goes, its like with the careermode, they tried to reinvent the wheel instead of asking advice, like alot of the planes were done by 3rd party,

I think you’re right. So in short, yes, they did reinvent the wheel so to speak, and in the process of making something so new, I think they went and overdid it and now can’t keep up with fixing all the bugs that were created with their AI mission architecture.

They did a great thing in making this, but they’ve relied too heavily on AI generation to make the missions. And as a result has made a lot of career mode arcade-like, buggy, or is in fact completely left with a broken mission and/or lack of variation. Some of these niches are super dynamic and using AI generation and apparent lack of focus on creating the environment properly with SME input and specialized teams has made for broken, unrealistic, extremely limited missions, or all 3 due to this. They should be spending time with specific teams developing the mission types for the niches and testing them to make sure they work properly! Perfect examples being dynamic missions like SAR, Firefighting, and Agriculture Spray. The latter two especially are missing huge portions of the niche and it makes it come across arcade-ish versus realistic.

Somehow FSX is still the pinnacle when it comes to flight lessons (Rod Machado) and missions. With these AI generated MSFS2024 missions, when you have flown one you have flown all. Sure, the location is different, but there is little variation otherwise. Even with these missions unlocked, I think we will all get bored quite quickly with it and go back to free flight.

Moderator Edit:
Hey, you just have to set the option in free flight as training, no earnings, no XP, just fly freely and in career mode it’s just as it is without spending a lot of money.

\Moin man müsse doch nur die Option im freien Flug als Training setzten kein verdienst keine XP einfach frei fliegen und im Karriere Modus ist dann eben so wie es ist ohne groß Geld aus zu geben
