Carenado Mooney M20R Ovation

I’m glad you are not being too swayed by the negative posts about VR, since this is just an initial release and there will always be issues. However the experience is so transformative that it is completely not worth playing on a flat screen ever again (unless you were to build your own true-to-life replica cockpit). Performance was a huge issue for me but I mostly solved it by following a guide for using the right settings in Windows and in-game. It still only hits 30 FPS and relies on reprojection to reach the 90 Hz refresh rate of the headset (the CPU updates the game at 30 FPS, but the GPU renders an additional 2 frames in between that accounts for your head rotation) which is a little jerky if you are flying close up to terrain, but in most circumstances it is not an issue running at medium settings. The 3D mouse-based approach works very well in the default aircraft, although I hope they eventually add support for tracked controllers without cutting corners in the process. Overall, I’m very impressed with how well it works, and it will only improve as we all get better hardware and they release updates. I’d recommend you search for a used HTC Vive that you can buy locally.

FYI, I’ve fixed the POV cockpit quick views by editing the cameras.cfg file. If anyone is interested, please let me know. I can send you the cfg file. I’ll share it with Carenado so they can integrate it in their next update.

I didn’t look into the external lights eating up excessive FPS yet.

I’m really starting to like the plane!

I held off getting the Mooney until this Christmas sale, but after the positive comments outweighed the negative ones by 3:1 over the past few weeks I figured, “Why not?”

Glad I bought the Ovation. It’s nice to have another steam gauge aircraft to buzz around in, and this one is sleek and fast. Initial climb out is downright wild: big six cylinder power in a light airframe. So far I’ve had some good fun, and without many issues. Took a minute to figure out the AP, but I think I’ve got it down now. Flew a nice smooth ILS approach into KSBP this morning on the return trip from KSNA.

I have noticed a frame rate penalty, especially in the LA basin when flying through Bravo airspace around LAX. That’s one of the most taxing areas - on the west coast of the US - to operate, so no big deal. It is, however, the first time I’ve ever had the simulator pause for a second or two; it recovered with “no harm, no foul.” Overall I’m pretty impressed. It’s fun to have a fast single equipped with old school round gauges. The engine management strip is especially nice.

After poking around on the 'net, found a site with a copy of the POH.

Hahaha your kind of feedbacks on VR really drives me to find VR set as quick as possible. Budget wise Oculus Quest 2 is a reasonable option and I wish I can try locally the Reverb G2 to justify higher cost. Just upgraded to RTX 3070 so pocket for this amazing hobby is half full. And flying the Mooney, with 530 mod, and 34” ultrawide is so satisfying. And all those who successfully set up their VRs are preaching it’s another level of experience. Dang, don’t want to miss that boat, and looking forward to the higher level of immersion with VR.

Happy Holidays

Great! Although I am happy with my camera settings, please do share and I will try it out. Maybe I am missing something great.

Happy Holidays

There’s a few PDFs in the documents section of the download. They are pretty useful. On my setup they are found in the following directory:

I’ll be making these adjustments for other planes too. Here is the repo on GitHub: GitHub - mracko/MSFS_Cockpit_Quickview_Camera_Fix: A collection of custom cockpit camera views for MSFS 2020 aircraft that fixes/improves the default POV quick view settings.

I’m using 0.4 zoom factor and 4K resolution. It’s intended for non-TrackIR and non-VR users. Although I have TrackIR 3 with Vector Expansion and Rift CV1, I don’t find them relaxing when playing MSFS. Plus with small kids around, you can’t immerse yourself too much into the sim.

yes.

Overall, the major issues have been resolved.

Have to add… the wing fuel tank guages are in error. Just something to add to the list.

I have had ‘stutters’ around KLAX… but today … doing an ILS 25L… in the Mooney, it was seconds of freezing. First time I have had it so bad.

Orbx KBUR, when it first came out, had a bad issue with stuttering, which lowering graphic settings helped.

I have experienced freezes as well, and not just in the Mooney. They usually clear and I can continue. This is the first time since the initial release that I’ve repeatedly experienced this issue.

There is a KJFK to KLAX tomorrow.

If a number of the report issues coming in for landings. we can bump it to the Devs.

Yea… that’s a great idea…

Out of curiosity, I did touch and go patterns at KLAX. No freezing, and no stuttering but KLAX is heavy on my resources, almost same with KJFK.

My biggest gripe with this AC is the sound quality and the unrealistically low drag. For sound, im not talking about bad or unrealistic recordings, they’re pretty good. I especially like the sound of the keys jingling when you swap mags. Im talking about the fact that the audio bitrate sounds low. Almost as if its 64kbps instead of the 128kbps generally accepted standard. I didn’t notice it until I got a good pair of Sennheiser’s for xmas. But its definitely a lower bitrate than the stock aircraft. For drag, I guess this could be due to MSFS lack of prop drag, but when I kill the engine, I can maintain altitude and the speed bleeds off too slowly. Its as if the aircraft has 2x as much inertia as it should. The G36 is fairly similar in terms of weight and retractable gear and it bleeds off speed about twice as fast. Flaps take care of it for landing, but for engine out simulations its barely even a problem since at 4k feet I can just cherry pick the perfect spot off in the distance and glide in no problem.

Never any CTDs yet. Autopilots… interesting lol.

So in love.

Hello. Anyone managed to bind with the controls/keyboard the ARM - Altitude Select Mode Button? And afterwards adjust the vs rate as well. Thanks for the tip.

Having flown Bonanzas and Mooneys in real world I can tell you that Mooneys are much more slippery than Bonanza’s. Thats why they perform so good on so much less horsepower.

funny you say that, because the caravan did too, for a while lol

There is a button for the speed brakes, but it’s hard to see because it’s on the far left side of the yoke.

From further up the thread…

Are you a Mooney pilot? How did you get to be so knowledgeable about the flight characteristics of the plane? Really,… asking…
