This may be a stupid question, and I can’t find an answer on the forum already, but does anyone know why the Cessna 172 has both the Garmin GNS 530 and GNS 430? Don’t these do essentially the same thing? Is it just redundancy, or is there something (probably very obvious) that I’m missing?
You can crossfill flight plans (at least on the real one) and have them set on pages you want. Generally speaking though a single unit (being a 430W more often than not) is far more common in a 172 and I think that when it comes to upgrading avionics (the 430/530 is quite old at this point) you only get credit for the 530W.
EDIT: I just remembered I think crossfilling automatically happens in MSFS.

Its nice to have both for REDUNDANCY, and each unit can display a different screens which is also useful, and can save switch a Single Unit a lot between screens.
Also just to add, if you are flying the 172 with the GNS530/430, get this mod
Adds allot more functionality and brings it very close to real world.

Very much this. If you’re using the stock GNS units, you’re doing yourself a great disservice. Been using this mod since it launched. If this mod stopped working and couldn’t be fixed, I would literally stop flying GNS-equipped MSFS planes rather than going back to the stock GNS.
Wow, that’s a good recommendation! I use the WT G3000 for the TBM and like you, couldn’t fly without it. Not done much in the 172, so that’s what I’m experimenting with just now. Got hold of an XTouch Mini with Axis and Ohs to see how that works. Will try that mod tonight
I find it difficult to believe that Anyone is flying the C172 Classic without this fantastic Mod.
Easily one of the best Mods for MSFS, along with Little Nav Map
You can quite literally pull out the real GNS 530/430 user’s manual to learn to use this mod. There are a couple of limitations of the sim that prevent real world features from being fully implemented, and a few that just can’t be added in a sim, but this is about as close to a 1:1 of the real thing that you can get.
It’s one of those things “you don’t know what you don’t know”.
I only learned of it when I posted the issue with the stock C172 flying in a constant bank after putting AP into NAV mode.
I don’t believe it’s on flightsim.to (should be in the must have section).
It be nice to have a compiled list of mods with a basic description of what they do and where to find them that the community maintained for the newcombers and others alike.
