CTD in SU9 after latest Win 10 update

After this week’s Windows 10 update I cannot run SU9 anymore. It was working great before the update.

The sim crashes while loading, way before it gets to the world map.

The error description is:

Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program FlightSimulator.exe because of this error.

Program: FlightSimulator.exe
File:

The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
User Action

  1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
  2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
    • It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
    • It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
  3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
  4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
  5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

the problem will gone after a full “windows restart” , or ?

Yes. At any time after I boot up the computer.

What is interesting is that the error message does not show the actual filename.

Can you share the whole message from Windows Event Viewer ? There should be an error number. I remember , long ago and not sure whether same problem, that I had one-time a similar message after an update ( not sure whether it was windows or steam ). But it was just one time and was gone after windows restart.

What you can try is a clean-up of the AppData folder.

As example the files I mentioned in this topic:

( also last post in that topic )

Of course, let run a windows check ( sfc /scannow … dism ) might also worth to do.

Some more info. Isn’t there a verbose logging that details each step of the blue bar? Given the many distinct things (login, content.xml, cache) are being touched during the blue bar phase, a log system like that of Windows Installer (with all the steps and corresponding results) would be useful.

In other news, I just fired up the game and it started without problems; did not do anything to the disk (e.g., chkdsk) or deleted any files.

Last Friday two Windows update were installed:
2022-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H1 for x64-based Systems (KB5017308)

2022-09 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 21H1 for x64 (KB5017499)

My system has become unstable since these updates. The NVIDIA driver crashed even before starting MSFS. XBOX crashed before starting MSFS. MSFS has crashed at different times: while starting, before starting a flight, using Safe mode, using Normal mode. For me this is a unusual number of crashes in a short period of time. I’m running a stress test now.

I am seriously considering removing these two updates if the instability continues. Thankfully, there wasn’t the new NVIDIA driver or SU10 I had to deal with.

ah yes, that is exactly the error number I remember.

But it is gone in my case after a restart ( or I did a system-scan, can’t exact remember ) and then never seen this again. ( I was also not sure, whether Steam caused that )

As mentioned, I also cleanup from time to time the AppData folder, may be that can help you.

You can also try a windows-cleanup and allways do a real “windows restart” ( not only shutdown ).

PS: also found an older topic, but less info in it

In addition to random CTDs lately after a year of none, I discovered that my Cessna 337 had some nav issues (which was NOT a Carenado problem, I think) may have all been caused by Windows Update corrupting files. I ran sfc.exe and found ALL THREE of my independent Windows 10 machines suddenly had corrupted files. Couldn’t replicate the 337 issues so hopefully this fixes them as well but so far so good.
