CTDs are getting out of hand

Since the last update (I’m not sure of the number) I am loosing way too many flight hours to CTDs. At least 6 or 7 times since that update I have lost an hour or two to CTDs. The really sad thing is that you can’t even go into the log book and add in what you got before the crash. I have hundreds of log entries that have no takeoffs, landings or flight hours. These can’t be deleted. Almost every flight I have made that did get recorded does not give credit for the takeoff. I have not added any new addons since the update. I have not made any changes to my equipment. So it has to be the update that’s causing the problem. It is so ■■■■ frustrating to have a great flight going, hours accumulated, then all of a sudden sound stutters, sim stops then crashes to the desktop. Horrible!

I get the frustration but I also just did a new PC build that seems to just eat up the the sim and run as stable as notepad.

Check your mods and maybe rename your Community folder to remove all the mods. Maybe some add-on isn’t compatible with the update.

Then create a new Community folder and slowly move mods over until you see which one is causing problems.

Most likely it’s an add-on/mod causing the problem. it has happened to me before.

You will need to come up in safe mode to also remove Marketplace purchases. After a CTD, you should get that option.

But my sim in running good without any CTDs.

Are you overclocking? If so stop it. MSFS is very sensitive to overclocks.

The instability of this simulator is a major problem. Blame add-ons, blame this, blame that, but Xplane doesn’t have anywhere near the problems that go on with this software.

About 5 minutes ago just CTD during the approach phase of CYVR>KSJC. What a waste of time and disheartening experience when you get all amped up for an approach after a decent flight to have that happen.

Oh well, seems misery loves company.

If I was you I’d go back to playing with XP and save myself some heartache

well, for some people its ctd hell, for others none.
xplane is simple compared to this game.

If theres one feature MSFS desperately needs to copy from X-Plane 11 its that log file the latter generates with every startup or CTD. All my XP11 issues were fixed so easily by looking at that log file which instantly showed that a mod was causing issues. This feature should have been in MSFS from Day 1.

I highly recommend flying with an empty Community folder for a long time. Fly in only default planes. Do this for about a week. Fly a lot if you can. This will establish a baseline and will make it clear to see if its even just the base unmodded game thats CTD’ing.

As another user said - dial back any overclock if you have an OC’d system. Doesnt have to be by a huge amount. For example I dialed mine back from 3.8Ghz to 3.5Ghz.

Have a look at Windows Event viewer for clues, nowhere near as good a dedicated game log though.

I agree, there desperately needs to be a startup log which shows everything the sim is trying to load so you can simply read the last entry. It would have to be helpful for the devs and 3rd party devs too I’d imagine.

Its a bugfest and an inconsistent mess.

I had to reinstall everything last week because it just stopped working after the latest update. Couldnt really pinpoint anything even after messing about and testing various scenarios.

I have now reinstalled and it took me nearly 4 days to sort. ive added add on linker and ive tried to whack my addons onto another drive to save space. All on a new system with two M2 drives.

Well im now having microstutters and let me tell you thats worse than low fps in my eyes, because it just chips away at you whilst you fly.

This has definitely resurfaced after the latest World update.

I’m less than impressed with the level of QA that goes into these updates as it seems the sim is gradually starting to run worse. Needs some major optimisation in places.

Try flying in dev mode and forget logs and achievements and just fly. Turn AI traffic off and Live traffic OFF for testing. Fly in GROUP mode by yourself to ensure it’s not another plane. Also rename your community folder so the sim loads without it and creates an empty one.

Then begin to see where it’s crashing and try to isolate the issue a bit. Worst case scenario your stuttering from the log book should be gone. If you absolutely must fly with a log then use a pen and paper and write it down. This sim has so many issues in normal mode it’s not even funny.

Is the suggestion that whatever tiny piece of data is transferred as part of the logbook might cause the game to stutter?

That would be quite…alarming.

All configurations are different, but I havent had a single ctd since the update. Anything that may make a difference is tough to diagnose, but just for starters, how much RAM do you have, and what speed is it running at. it might be worth removing each stick in turn as you may have a memory issue that isn’t sim related, but shows up when you are running it.

Those aren’t always due to CTD’s. A common cause is taking off from a towered airport without first contacting tower.

I can count on one hand number of CTD’s I’ve had since day 1. I run a mid range gaming laptop, with mainly medium settings..still looks great (granted to others maybe not ) would be genuinely interested to know if people turn down the settings do you get the same issues? I appreciate that might not be what you want to do but would/does it help? With regards to xplane. It’s much further down the line. When x plane 12 comes maybe it’s a fairer comparison. Although based on previews.,it doesn’t look like it will be anywhere near msfs from a visual point of view

it may be too much for you, but my sim is running smoothly after turning photogrammetry off.

That’s the key for me. Find a level that works for the sim, yourself and your pc. I seem to remember when fsx launched someone saying there wasn’t a pc on the planet capable of running it maxed out. But just like this that was built with the future in mind. Maybe we all just want too much right now..which to be fair is maybe our right as a consumer in the modern world

I do also by the way remember when you got a game for the spectrum and it was bugged and crashed all the time…it never got fixed..it was just tough luck :rofl:

I came from XBox. There, there are a whole bunch of bugs that are specific only to XBox, and they are difficult to resolve because all testing is done with an emulator, but the emulator doesn’t function like a real XBox does.

I laid down the money for a top of the line laptop, and an Ultrawide+ monitor. I have to say, I am happy as can be. The sim for me, is really really stable. I’m not running into all the same issues I did on XBox. I get it, those that do have issues, hearing that someone doesn’t, it doesn’t help them. I know. I 've been there. All I can say is, the sim is getting more stable as time goes on. I’m absolutely loving it, and glad I made the switch to PC. I has made great strides in reliability since August, so have faith.
