CTDs are getting out of hand

As others have said, remove everything from the community folder and see if the CTDs disappear. If they do, add a couple back in at a time and fly until you find the one that’s causing it.

If removing everything from the community folder doesn’t fix it, then uninstall all marketplace purchased addons from the Content Manager (don’t worry, you don’t lose them and you can reinstall them just fine). If the CTDs disappear then add reinstall a couple at a time and fly until you find the one that’s causing it.

If that doesn’t stop the CTDs, then make sure there are no modified files in the official folders. Many times people modify/rename/remove a file inside the official folder (never remove or rename a file without making changes to the layout.json that points to it) to make a change to the sim (taxi ribbon modifications, remove or change text, etc.). Put back all original files in the official folders and see if the CTDs disappear. If they do then you can slowly make your changes again until you find the one that’s causing it.

If all that fails to find it, then it’s likely something external (video and hardware drivers, hardware conflict, external software, etc.)

Yes, there were addon issues. Such as if you have a “duplicate” entry in your Content Manager on XBox, you get a crash. So for example, say you had the Landmarks London addon from Orbx, and you tried also running DreamScenery’s London Enhanced Night Lighting. That works perfectly fine on PC. On XBox, it causes a CTD at flight start up. There were also some addons that just had “XBox specific” issues, and weren’t going to get a fix until something happened on the XBox side. For a while, none of my bush planes on XBox would go when throttle was applied. It was an extremely frustrating experience, and I kept spending all my time trying to narrow down what was causing this or that problem.

So yeah, if you are on XBox, but don’t have a lot of addons, then you probably are ok. I just wasn’t in that situation, and I love making my world more realistic. So I made the move, and I don’t regret it in the slightest.

If you have that, better delete it.

Landmarks London and Enhanced London Night lighting works perfectly fine together on PC. As do Chicago Landmarks with Enhanced Chicago Night Lighting, LVFR’s Miami International with Enhanced Miami Night Lighting, etc. You can’t have a “duplicate” entry in Content Manager on XBox. It causes a CTD as soon as you press the Fly button. I don’t intend on deleting anything, I want them working together, and they do on PC.

oh i would not regret that too, i just dont have a spare 2000 available.
i am quite happy with the series s, it runs amasingly smooth.
i knew about the limits beforehand, so be it.

Not quite in agreement with that statement. I overclock just fine and have rock solid stability.

That said, I know what I am doing and I know how to do stability and stress testing to prove the build is stable.

People that have no idea what that even means, probably shouldn’t be overclocking.

Just add a log file. Or some sort of debugger. Anything to point out what was it that caused the crash rather than a generic 0x…05 Windows exception. Thousands of wasted hours would have been saved this way.

Then we could focus on what was it that crashed the sim, because there seem to be a trillion different things that can cause it to crash at any given time.

I have an Xbox series S as well as a Series X. It’s stable on the Series S, but I get CTDs on the Series X occasionally. Exactly the same add-ons on both consoles. Leads me to believe that the sim is more optimised on the Series S with the lower memory and resolution. Maybe those 4K textures on the Series X are just using up too much memory.

Sooooo what did you build? If you don’t mind sharing.

Asus 570x tuf, Ryzen 7 5800X, liquid cooled, RTX 3080ti, Samsung 980 Pro NVMe with a fresh Windows 11 and MSFS install.

Not to jinx, but it hasn’t CTD’d on me! WU9 may come to slap me.

I’m not blaming hardware on CTDs. I think code might me able to be more resilient than it is.

I’m so ready to get back to cross the pand but ctds hopefully they will figure it out i

WOW! This topic generated a ton of responses. Here’s what I did. I renamed my community file and started a new one. The only things I put in the new one were two of my favorite addon airplanes. The FlyingIron Spitfire and P-38L. I did two test flights today, a one hour one and a two hour one. No CTDs. I am still getting the non-recorded takeoffs though. Most of the time I get these at uncontrolled airports. Even though I report my taxi and takeoff. Sometimes I even get this at controlled airports even though I use ATC and do all the right stuff. When I left Friday Harbor (uncontrolled) I reported my taxi to runway 34, I even followed the blue taxi markers. When I got to the runway I announced my takeoff. When I landed at Kors about an hour later I announced my intention to land and followed approach protocols, landed and announced clear of runway. The logbook recorded the landing and flight time but not the takeoff from Friday Harbor. This sort of thing has been happening a lot lately. Thanks for all the suggestions.

ah yes, it seems the x is not optimalised very well.
and yes it is probably a memory issue.

this is always the first to try, run with empty community folder.
so it seems it is not the update after all.
now what addon is the problem? isnt it fun this msfs??

I am flying in safe mode with empty community folder and many items excluded by the sim from my content. And it did it again. Sound stuttered, sim stopped then CTD. I was flying the X Cub, a stock MSFS aircraft. So now it does look like it’s the sim. I am also not overclocked on my CPU or GPU. Has anyone else who has gone to safe mode still had a CTD?

Installing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020

I use a Win10 (1909) MSI Cx62 6QD laptop, i7, nvidia 940MX, 16Gb ram, 500Gb SSD.

I bought the ten DVD set.

After 24 hours I still have NOT successfully installed msfs!!

It crashes to the Desktop (CTD) before completing the install. It gets as far as “World Improvements” – Spain/ Portugal etc. then crashes.

There’s a long thread (going back to 2019) on “failure to install – CTD”

The main successful solution seemed to be:

cmd.exe /C start shell:AppsFolder\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App –FastLaunch

This was tried numerous times…

Working in safe mode

While checking for upgrades – black screen – blue line at bottom, then CTD.

Checked for Win 10 upgrades – installed the latest Win10 upgrade 21H2

Removed the Realtek Audio 11.8.21 6.0.1.866

Tracked the error through Event Viewer:

Module d3ll.dll Ver 10.0.0.19041.1202

Exception code 0xc0000005

RE-tried the – Fast Launch

This time it looked for Updates and showed 92Gb as “Mandatory Update”
Rebooted laptop
Retried the – Fast Launch

Got to “Checking for updates”, Black screen, Blue line (about 50%) then CTD!!!

Looking back on things, I do note that msfs raised a message “Your computer doesn’t meet minimum requirement and performance may be compromised.” The MSI spec (see above) looks OK???

Where do I go from here? Need help.

I thought I had undone my overclocking awhile back but I checked and apparently I didn’t. I just undid the GPU overclocking. My CPU is still overclocked at 4.8mHz stock is 3.7. My machine runs good at this overclock. But I guess it may have something to do with the CTDs.

Not sure what I did differently the last day or two but CTD and game loading just a black screen. Stuff I have never seen before. The amount of having to clear cache from the C drive and all the work around listed in the support page that I have to go through is mind blowing for one game, LOL.

One item you will read in the troubleshooting FAQ is to remove all overclocks i.e. CPU, GPU, and memory.

Your mileage may vary, with many differences between components, regarding how much you can get away with. The only overclock I have is the XMP config on my memory, and it’s never caused me any issues.

Finally found a solution to constant recent CTDs: I deleted the content of the 1250410 folder in :
x:\Steam\userdata\[your Steam ID]\1250410
(x is the location where your Steam is installed)
You loose all your personal settings (peripherals, game preferences, logbook and achievements) but at last the game starts normally and you get rid of all the exe and windows crashes.
Good luck all…
