DarkSpace xEnviro 2020

From ‘Captain Kitten’ on Threshold Forum: https://forum.thresholdx.net/topic/5644-xenviro-2020-10-release-notes/

DarkSpace and Threshold are proud to present the most accurate weather engine for Microsoft Flight Simulator. With over ten years of experience with reproducing real weather on X-Plane with realistic training in mind, we have ported the core of xEnviro over to Microsoft Flight Simulator to get the most precise weather in the most popular simulator.

Features:

  • Real-time meteorological data with a refresh interval from 5 up to 60 minutes.
  • Historical weather data is available at 30 minutes intervals.
  • Atmosphere condition based on dynamic air parcel prediction model used for real aviation research and training.
  • Advanced atmosphere topology methods provide accurate cloud thickness and density prediction.
  • Atmosphere quality includes humidity, pollution and fine particle amount.
  • Actual wind direction and speed for all levels and temperature, turbulence and wind shear.
  • Simulation of in-cloud turbulence.
  • Surface crosswind components can be reduced during ground roll for users with no rudder pedals.
  • Seasonal data processed by our servers all year round provides real-time snow coverage.
  • All the weather and atmosphere-heavy calculations are executed on our servers. Therefore, expect no performance impact on your hardware.
  • Feature to look up the current METAR, and TAF reports in the Weather Briefing window.
  • Feature to display METAR reports for the stations around your aircraft.
  • Options to change Flight Simulator toolbar appearance and size.

Our path:
We start with releasing two main components along side the rest of the feature list; the weather engine and historical weather. We have many features planned but are also very eager to hear from you about what you want to complete your environment addon in Microsoft Flight Simulator. First, we will concentrate on non-visual features.

We want to bring xEnviro’s true-scale clouds to MSFS eventually, but this needs a thorough evaluation of the access and performance trade-off. So no promises on this are made at this point.

Future features:
Join the xEnviro discord to add your feature requests.

To our customers on the X-Plane platform:
We will not be abandoning you. In fact, now that we have released this version for the “other” sim, we will be focusing on xEnviro 1.18 and ironing out current issues. 1.18 will still be for X-Plane 11. We will ideally be alternating between the two platforms to have equal progress on both.

(Only if a hotfix is needed will we update xE20_1.01 before xE_1.18)

Pricing:
Our pricing is fixed. For the whole version 1. x run you will have free updates. MSFS is somewhat new to us so we still need to see what is possible and what is not. But the price will not change with the features planned.

The price of xE20 will be 42,- USD
Existing customers of xEnviro for X-Plane will get a fixed discount price of 24,- USD
Regardless of where you bought xEnviro, your discount will be applied in the store when you use the email that you registered xEnviro with.

xEnviro 2020 will initially only be available at the Threshold store.

Known issues:
Since the scaling in MSFS is way off it is hard to depict the weather correctly. MSFS scales their clouds at least twice the size of what is realistic.

One example is with METAR: FEW032 OVC044
This is overcast with smaller wispy clouds beneath. This is impossible to set in MSFS.
Trying to set a layer at 3200ft and tops at 4400ft 1200ft thick - the lower layer will basically just be transparent.

We have scaled down the clouds to approx 1.5- 1.6 from 2.x and this can lead to some wonky clouds in some rare conditions.
We hope to bring our own clouds in in the future.

The only way this becomes even remotely more appealing than what MSFS is giving us is if you’re product doesn’t rely solely on METARS to provide the weather, this will just be a revamped version of ASN or REX Weather Force. The issue right now for the weather is that MeteoBlue is being blocked out or overridden by METARS being the determinate factor for weather representation. So if you’ve found a source that is not METAR based and can use your engine to inject that into MSFS then you’ll be good.

Hi.
I just bought and installed the xEnviro 2020 but I don’t know how it has to work! No manual, no explanation, no picture, no video, nothing! Can someone explain how to work with it? Thanks.

A lot of people have been asking for historical weather. I wonder if this feature alone will entice a lot of people to buy XEnviro for MSFS.

Also, it appears that more and more XP developers are prioritizing MSFS. I think we will see more companies like iniBuilds, xEnviro, Airfoilabs, etc, come out with products for MSFS and gradually move away from XP.

Registered on the Threshold store with the email I used to buy Xenviro on the Xplane-Org store, and it’s not showing me any discount at checkout. Welp.

Might give it a try if the discount works. Used their product a few years ago in X-Plane. Performance was an issue (don’t think it was even compatible with 4K) but felt their atmospheric rendition in terms of colours and haze was spot on at the time. Wonder how much of a difference it will make in MSFS.

install it on your c drive, a icon will appear in the system tray which has the menu for manual, switch on/off etc

did you put your email address in the coupon box?

Yep, that worked. Thanks!

 Problem Solved! Thank you for your help.
We “don’t” install the program in “Program Files” folder, otherwise it won’t work.

Wow - I did not expect this.

I bought xEnviro for XP11 and the difference was substantial, especially poor weather / visibility effects, amazing.

I will keep an eye on this.

Hello again.
When using the xEnviro weather, the clouds will change like Slide Show.
With 15 minutes “weather update interval” and “weather change speed Slow or very fast”, what should I do that cloud change doesn’t look like this?
Thank you for your help.

Does this offer real spacial variation like live weather, where fronts can be seen on the horizon, or is this similar to REX in that it injects global cloud layers, which then gradually get changed and blended when you move around?

Anyone getting this when trying to create an account on their store?

I got XEnviro for XP11 back when it was released and to me it was a major innovation for XP11 back then. I would even say that what V12 has in terms of clouds tech does not seem to be anything more advanced In my opinion…

Now for MSFS, I think the cloud tech is already great, despite refinement and limitations that one day will be finetuned and fixed such as ash clouds under direct sunlight for example…

I never noticed MSFS has oversized clouds, I compare the coverage to what I see outside my windows and I see very similar skies…

I got REX Weather Force when it came out and I used it a few times and reverted back to default MSFS weather… Because, I agree with the post above that mentioned that METARs alone are not the ideal recipe… They are more of a “bottleneck” if we can call it this way vs MeteoBlue weather tech…

I look forward to seeing what XEnviro will bring more than the other weather addons to MSFS…

It’s a global preset generator based on surrounding airport reports and updates as you move around.

The historical weather feature sounded interesting until I found out that it only dates back to 16 October (as I understand it anyway). If correct, this key feature (for me) will unfortunately be of little use to me personally for maybe a year or so.

I also recall that the Xplane 11 version of Xenviro had a reputation for tanking fps. I will be looking therefore to see that this isn’t also a factor with the FS20 version.

All this said, however, I will keep it on the radar and look at a few user reviews. It will be interesting at any rate to see what, if anything, it adds to the table over and above what either the default Asobo or even the Rex product does.

In my book though it’s going to have to add quite a bit to what is already on offer to be worth the $42.

Interesting though and totally unexpected.

Why does not it work? And I understood. what should be the drop down menu in the simulator? He is not.
