Downloading Base Content hangs

I’ve a couple of updates on offer which I’m keeping for testing in the next flighting build, but another update appeared for the H125 and I got it installed using the workaround described above.

Version number has gone from 5.2.0 to 5.2.1, confirming that I am genuinely updating and not just reinstalling the old version.

Here’s a better alternative for upgrading My library items if simply clicking Upgrade isn’t working. Unlike my first technique, it doesn’t require that you manually delete any files.

Note name and version number of the item (or items: I’m making these notes while upgrading the LEARJET-35A CARGO BUNDLE, the only upgrade I’m currently being offered - I chose to upgrade the individual bundle items one at a time):

LEARJET-35A 1.7.3
LEARJET-35A CARGO EXPANSION PACK 1.1.1

Click on ‘Update available’ on one of the items.

Two tabs appear at the bottom of the screen. Click on ‘More options’.

Click on ‘Uninstall’ (I haven’t tested clicking ‘Disable’, but I know ‘Uninstall’ works, and I know that at some point the old version has to be removed in order for the new version to replace it.)

Click on the ‘All’ tab.

Enter the name of your item in the search box.

It will show either as ‘Disabled’ or ‘Streamed’ (I’m seeing ‘Streamed’ for the two Learjet items, but I saw ‘Disabled’ on an earlier single item.).

Enable the item if necessary.

Download.

install.

Check for updated installation number (it will not appear until the item is again installed).

In this case, I repeated the procedure for the other item, and ended with:

LEARJET-35A 1.7.3 now 1.7.7
LEARJET-35A CARGO EXPANSION PACK 1.1.1 now 1.1.3

Well, it seems that OrneryBoomer884 is having the same problem on XBox:

That would rule out it being a Steam-only problem, but it doesn’t yet rule out my hypothesis that the Update subroutine is only looking in the Official2024[or 2020]/microsoftstore folder (I think that’s the name, I haven’t got one so I can’t check) rather than also looking in Official20xx/Steam and whatever folder names XBox uses.

What would disprove my hypothesis is if PC Microsoft Store customers are also having the same issue.

Well, hypotheses exist to be disproved, so if any PC Microsoft Store customers are having the same issue, let us know.

I am an MS Store (through the XBOX app) user so my directory for installed files is instead the OneStore folder inside of Official2024 folder and I found many of the same issues so it’s not just Steam having the issues. I had downloaded the Asobo-aircraft-c172sp-as1000 item on the first day using SU3 along with hundreds of other items and it seemed to install ok and from what I could tell it was working. The first update came to the SU3 and a number of my files had Update Available on them including the 172. I selected them all and updated and all changed to Install Ready. The bug appeared when trying to Install. You just got an endless circle and the sim locked. The only way to escape was through task manager. I did some of the steps of cancelling the updates and uninstalling the items and then tried to just reinstall the 172. Once again a hang after Install Ready and another forced crash. That’s when I looked inside the OneStore folder and found not only the folder marked Asobo-aircraft-c172sp-as1000 but also one named Asobo-aircraft-c172sp-as1000-temp. The temp one clearly had the full downloaded info in it.

(Note: Both folders show as read-only.) For an experiment, I copied the contents of the -temp folder into the base folder and deleted the temp folder. When I went back into MSFS it still showed that the 172 was Install Ready. Like an idiot I told it to install and same thing with the endless spinning circle. Supposedly that’s the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.

I looked again in the OneStore folder and saw that there is a hidden read-only folder at the top called .fscontent and in there I saw a 172 file that said ready to install in the name. I’ve deleted that file now and we’ll see if my 172 is fully installed now.

I was a programmer for years and the one thing I learned is to keep the UI process as simple as possible with absolutely few steps to achieve your goal. There is NO reason why we as users when we choose an option to install/download/update an item should require any further action on our parts. It is the job of the programmer to do all those steps. We CLEARLY picked an action. There is no logic at all to ask that user again to install the item once it is successfully downloaded. All of the steps I can see that are occurring are fairly simple ones, create a temp folder, download the item until successful, replace the streamed version with that item and let the user know it is complete. If there are any other steps required behind the scenes to utilize that downloaded/upgraded item, then make the edits and leave us out of the process. And for gosh sakes, there is nothing more annoying than a spinning circle. At least with a progress bar you know if things are actually happening.

That (at least at the start) was a downloading base content issue, not an update issue. I’ve had no problems installing stuff, just with updates.

Though I do now see people in the thread discussing update problems, but I think I’d already started this thread at that point.

If the moderators think this thread should be merged into that one, so be it, but I’d still like to know if Microsoft Store customers are having this issue - I only saw one post regarding where the version the person was on could be identified, and that was a Steam customer.

If it’s happening to OneStore users then my hypothesis is disproved. Well, that’s what hypotheses are for.

I also experimented with deleting folders, but took it that the -temp folder would be the latest version, so I deleted the other one, and that worked for me.

Ninja’d by posts in a thread I wasn’t reading because by title it wasn’t about the issue I was having.

Oh well.

Same here, hitting “install” is the issue, not downloading.

So did the update from May 23 fix this issue. Don’t really feel like hassling with it if MS/Asobo can’t be bothered fixing it.

No it didn’t

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

The Extra 330LT was updated in the latest Beta build (1.5.2.0), but, when I tried to update via My Library it got stuck trying to Install the update.

Did you experience this issue before you joined the Beta?

No

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

No - but I only have the SPAD.NEXT LVAR Bridge installed

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

I tried it twice

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. In the previous SU3 beta (1.5.1.0) have downloaded and installed an Aircraft
2.The standard Aircraft is updated as part of the new build (1.5.2.0), and prompts to update in my Library
3.Download the update, and attempt to install
  2. Observe that the sim gets stuck trying to complete the install step - note that the Official2024\Onestore folder contains an Asobo-aircraft-e330 and an Asobo-aircraft-e330-temp folder in this state.
  3. The issue can be resolved by manually killing the Sim then deleting the Asobo-aircraft-e330 folder, then go in to My Library and cancel the state of the aircraft so it reverts to showing as Streamed. It can then be re-downloaded and re-installed at the updated version.

The same issue here but for allmost all content.
When first downloading and installing streamed content I did not have problems.
Today a lot of updates of this content was displayed and I started the updates. Downloads went OK and the contents after that was displayed as “ready to install”. Unfortunately now despite of several tries the sim does not install this content and remains in this state. An attempt to select one of these “ready to install” items and click “install” resumed in an endles working circle on the “installing” message that never finished.

Ive tried 4 times to install the Base Content in My Library with its 326 items..

The Base content icon is black and white with no version on it ie 2020 or 2024 so I’m assuming it is correct for 2024? However in the drop down list some entries are listed as

Each time when Ive downloaded and tried to install, the content get reported t either 1/326 or 325/326 and then hangs. I then have to uninstall and repeat the lengthy download again. Taking 2-3 hours on a 900mbs link!

Not good!

Is there a word around?

Same issue, Microsoft store, PC. Things downloaded well for 1.5.1, though it took a very long time. When I went to update things for 1.5.2, I had some freezes and some rotating circles.

• happens to me too. Can’t download US content that way, hope they fix it soon

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• Yes. In 1.5.3 0

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• The sim appears to open the Cessna sound file before any flight is created.
Updating the Cessna in My Library hangs, because the library installer cannot remove the sound file that another part of FS24 has opened; possibly at startup.
Windows prevents me from manually removing the sound file (because its open), so I have to kill FS24 in Task Manager.

As a retired developer I know the C++ code that performs startup and library management is not closing all files when it has finished using them.

I know there is a sound dll that runs as a thread. That’s an important area for the dev team to scrutinise.

Even if it works I will not try it because it did cost me a day of download time to install the streamed content for the first time and I would be not happy to do such effords again  So I’m hoping for an Asobo bugfix…

You don’t need to uninstall everything - just expand the base content, for example, and uninstall only the items that show “Update available” next to them.
