Emerald Scenery Design | Mini-Max 1500R Sport

Emerald Scenery Design & Friends Present:
The 1500R Sport - A Side Quest

Designed by Rotornut44, Mykrode (Got Friends), & Smitty (eSTOL)

The 1500R Sport

Our project is based on the Mini-Max 1500R Sport, which is a US Experimental – Amateur-built aircraft. And though it looks to be, it does not fall into the Ultralight category, as it’s empty weight exceeds the regulations by just 15 lbs (6.8 kg).

For the power-plant, we went with the Rotax 447, which is a 2-stroke putting out about 40 horses worth of power.

Although the real-life counterparts have since been mostly reengined, the 447 was decided upon due to the availability of resources, from data to sounds – which was a major factor for this project.

With it’s light weight, the 1500R has a takeoff roll under 100 ft (30 m) and a landing roll of around 200 ft (60 m). With our upgraded and larger 17″ tires, this makes for quite the capable aircraft on both soft-field and pavement. Though, it’s lack of suspension might make for more jarring off-airport landings.

Features

The 1500R is not designed to be a “study-level” aircraft, but that doesn’t mean that it’s hollow either. Our goal from the beginning was to create something fun and well rounded. Something that you can pull out of your hangar on a weekend and have a flight with some friends, while also having enough for those who prefer more systems depth.

These more noteworthy features include:

  • 12 hand-crafted liveries
  • Custom Wwise Sounds
  • 2-stroke choke simulation, including flooding (Optional + Persistent)
  • A breakable prop, resulting in engine damage (Reset with Slew Mode)
  • Multiplayer Smoke
  • Headphone Simulation
  • A togglable prop spinner (Persistent)
  • Tinted glass (Optional + Persistent)
  • Togglable Chocks
  • Togglable Pitot Cover (Will affect airspeed if left on)
  • Dynamic Vibration Simulation for gauges and various parts (Tunable Intensity + Persistent)
  • VR Motion Control Support for Stick, Switches, & Levers

While mostly the same in function, it should be noted that the implementation of chocks and pitot cover is handled differently in 2024, and are a part of the sim’s preflight system. However, along with manually clicking them, these can be toggled on/off with the included Blueprint options. This is a nice quality of life feature made possible in SU4.

Release When?

The 1500R will be released for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 as a fully native, modular product.

At the moment, the aircraft is in the late stages of beta testing and we are hoping for a January release – though this is dependent on Microsoft since we are still waiting on the required localization file for Marketplace.

When ready, the 1500R Sport will be available through the Emerald Scenery Design website, ORBX, and Marketplace for PC, Xbox, and hopefully PS5 (when that Marketplace is available for devs) and will be listed at 14.99 USD.

A free 1 day rental will be available on 2024’s in-sim Marketplace either at the time of release or shortly after, if not possible at release.

This announcement thread is a slightly abridged copy of the original announcement available to read on the website, which adds a bit more backstory.

Happy New Year to all!

Thanks to AvAngel, as well as sistersgrows over on Reddit for taking the 1500R for a spin and sharing their experience! I’ll include links to both of their videos below!

Also - a small update on release: the aircraft has now been submitted to the 2020 Marketplace and is awaiting ingestion. I will be able to submit the 2024 package after that is in the system (so that the 2020/2024 product purchases are linked together). I currently have a soft target set for the 29th however this may roll over into early February, as I am waiting on a trailer to be made (estimated Feb 1st). We shall see how everything falls into place!

I was hoping that the Minimax would be released this weekend.
But I guess I’ll have to wait a few more days before I can take to the skies with it.
I’m looking forward to it and thank you for your work.

Thanks for your patience and we do hope it will be worth the wait! It’s just coming off of that hurry up and wait time of year. Lots of downtime and backlog getting worked through from the holidays.

The 2020 version has completed ingestion and is starting final testing today. The 2024 version is about to be uploaded and should be ingested and in testing today as well. I’m not going to jinx it any further.

Jan 29th Update:
Due to some Marketplace ingestion issues (yes, I still jinxed it) that had to be resolved on Microsoft’s side, release is being pushed to the next release window, which is Monday. No matter what my website and ORBX will release on Monday the 2nd. Marketplace should release same day as well.

The 1500R Sport – Now Available for MSFS 2020 & 2024!

After many months of development and some waiting for holiday backlogs to clear out, the 1500R Sport is now available for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 & 2024!

What started as a personal side quest and bucket-list project turned into a rewarding collaboration with talented contributors like Mykrode (for 3D modeling and texturing), Smitty from eSTOL (flight model), and support from community developers like Sal1800, Lord Frites, Hans Hartmann, and the Got Friends team, who all answered various questions along the way. Thank you all – friends really do make it possible!

I also want to give a shout-out to my beta team of pilots, mechanics, and simmers which gave a lot of good feedback, shaping this aircraft into what it is today:

  • Aviator207
  • Av8trFord
  • Kilo Mike
  • red_baron17
  • LBR
  • Smitty
  • ChunkyFlyer
  • Floxtrot
  • Willy
  • ShamrockOneFive

A free trial is available on the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Marketplace, as well as various rental options for those who don’t want to jump in right away! Alongside our website, the 1500R Sport is also available from ORBX, as well as the MSFS Marketplace for both 2020 & 2024!

I love this plane!! She hops into the air after a mere 100 feet, and proffers an exhilarating experience. Perfect for exploring areas and getting rowdy. Kudos on creating an excellent and unique airplane!!!

Honestly the free trial should be mandatory for all marketplace items. It got you a sale from me on this.

It’s very under utilized. I see the reasons why devs may shy away from it, but in my mind it only helps with trust. I would rather someone try it for free and decide they don’t like it than to force a sale and just give them buyers remorse.

Thank you for the support!

Just wrapped up a Twitch Stream with WildRiverBushLeague a while ago where we set a new record for the most 1500R’s flying at once. Awesome to see this aircraft out in the wild and so many picking it up or at least giving the trial a go!

This is a great airplane! The Mini-Max was one of my favorite aircraft in FSX and I really missed having it in MSFS.

In addition to being a fun flyer, it helps to fill the ultralight gap in MSFS. There are few available ultralights, and the aircraft available in the MSFS Marketplace have encrypted configuration files. I hope Emerald Scenery continues to sell its aircraft on its website for those of us who like to do tweaks and modifications.

If you are looking for activities for your 1500R Sport, look at the ultralight sightseeing flight plans. They are short, low, slow flights that require no map, navigation instruments or utilities. Take off, see something, and land. As you fly, visual directional markers will be displayed that guide you.

There are several hundred ultralight sightseeing plans, so you should be able to find some that are interesting to you.

After an absence of two years due to a health issue, I am gearing up to produce more of these plans. I’m hoping to upload new plans within the next couple of weeks.

Yours looks warmer!

Had fun flying the free Marketplace trial tonight, and definitely will buy (direct from ESD). I overdressed for the moment, though.

1500R Sport | Post Release Dev Update

This past Monday marked 1 week of the 1500R being released, and thus far the reception has been very positive! Mykrode and I are glad to see so many people giving the aircraft a try, and had a blast flying with some of you across multiple streams during release week.

During those streams and while checking out the reviews that have popped up, we have been taking notes on various areas of improvement. This week I have been working my way through that list, solving a number of issues and making some quality of life improvements.

To start with, I have gone through and rebalanced a good bit of the audio, as many environment and foley sounds were way too loud in relation to the combustion sounds. The engine should drown out a lot of that in reality. And while doing so, I also found and fixed some issues with precip sounds missing some setup, as well as rudder foley sounds not looping.

In 2024, preflight covers have also now been added for the Engine, Prop, and Static Ports. This also fixes the issue with the prop spinning and aircraft sometimes tipping over when spawning ‘On ground - Shut down’. Preflight pin locations were also fixed for the Ailerons, Rudder, Elevator, and Tailwheel.

Another area of improvement I noticed quite early on was the conflict between the seat to exit the aircraft and the elevator trim. This has now been fixed by adding a seatbelt model and making that the clickable to exit the aircraft. The trim clickspot has also been adjusted to make it a bit easier to use.

The flight model has been given some attention by Smitty as well. After some more data review, it was determined that there should be more ‘slop’ in the controls, making them feel less linear and twitchy. We will still be running it by our test team for additional feedback first before final inclusion.

There is also a decent bit here that I am not mentioning, but I will save those for later.

Thank you all for supporting our project!

I wanted to build one these many years ago. Talked to the TEAM folks several times and almost bought a set of plans. Wound up buying a ‘46 Chief instead, but still wouldn’t mind flying a Mini-Max, IRL. I’ve seen a couple at fly-ins.

I took advantage of the free trail in the MP today and really enjoyed it. That 2-stroke whine put a big smile on my face every time I took off.

I like how it flies, love the sounds, and the stiffness of the undercarriage feels right on landing. Well done!

My only niggle is the texture of the wood in the cockpit. All the other textures are top-notch, even the wood textures of the prop, so I wonder if the texture of the “shelf” in the cockpit was intentional. It looks like a kind of vinyl wrap, in a way, with a kind of painted-on look to the “grain” which also “runs” in ways that couldn’t happen with real wood. Just curious. If it’s intentional, I can live with it. If not, then I hope it can be updated at some point.

Either way, I don’t think it will keep me from buying it.

Thanks for re-creating such an important homebuilt aircraft!

One question: I can’t find in the manual how to map the choke lever to a hardware axis. I can’t find “choke” in MSFS control settings.

This wood design is intentional. Mykrode decided on a more unique decorative wood design vs. a regular wood grain. Not necessarily realistic to what you would find in the majority of home-built aircraft, but I let him have his artistic freedom.

The choke can only be bound using external mapping software since it is a custom solution. Custom variables for mapping can be found on page 12.

Variable: L:LeverChoke
