Eureka.. CTD fix ! USB related

After MUCH messing around including a complete FS reinstall , I couldnt stop freezing even in menus, and an immediate CTD when trying a flight.. almost gave up
Tried every fix I could till I had a brainwave and removed ALL USB peripherals and left me only with a wired simple keyboard and mouse .. ( before I had a corsair fancy keyboard and logitech wireless mouse)
Trying the same flight (bora bora discovery) I was staggered to find it went straight in… no crashes .
Sooo.. I started adding back peripherals one by one and repeated the flight. Imagine my amazement when I discoverd it all STILL worked UNTIL I plugged in one thing…
I have a Steelseries Arctis headset with a wireless receiver (plugs in via USB)
BANG …frozen menus and immediate CTD on the test flight… remove it and restart …all good !!!
just plugging it in froze and locked up FS2020 while running..
So guys Im sure not many have this EXACT peripheral, but try going back to basics ..keyboard and mouse, and work up from there
It looks like this is a USB issue..
Im totally delighted !
Now to tweak ! !!
Im still showing some long pausing in flight though, so its not a magic bullet, but at least now flying..

good find, and this only proofs most issues are at the userside.

Indeed, but how BIZARRE this didn’t show up on the previous update or with any other Sim.
they clearly have made some USB changes in how it talks to stuff..

Thanks for the info. It’s something else to look for if we have CTDs :slightly_smiling_face:

Umm… no it doesn’t. A game should not crash because a user has a USB headset plugging into their PC. That’s very clearly a game bug which needs to be fixed.

Anyway, thanks for posting your fix OP! Hopefully this will help some, including me, avoid these CTDs. Yes, I have a USB headset connected so we’ll see how things go without it…

Sounds like a problem I had with my T16000 a while back New computer new Windows 10, new MSFS2020 install crash to desktop with USB joysticks plugged in - #6 by Hotdognz MSFS worked great except when you plugged the joystick in, whereupon it would crash with 100% consistently. Appears to be a broken synced joystick configuration file, the app can’t make sense of it and gives up. Reinstall doesn’t work because it’s redownloaded from the cloud.

OK but not a solution for a Microsoft paid game

It has to be something related to USB as MSFS2020 always freezes when I plug or unplug devices whilst running. For example, I always connect my VR headset before starting MSFS2020,. Otherwise crashes.

Well, not wanting to break the magic here, but I use Logi MXKeys and MX Master mouse with no issues. Besides that I run 21 other USB peripherals, working like a charm (of course plugged into two powered USB blocks).
I am curious if any USB related (optional) updates are waiting for installation with the OP.

By optional updates I assume you mean these… many are WAY older than my PC .its a 2020 Corsair i64
Ive read a few times not to mess with these …do you have a different view…

I would say so. You seem to be far behind on updates. Especially the HIDClass update could be relevant for your issue.
Please try it out. First reboot, install, reboot again and play. Then quit the sim, connect your peripherals (did you update Logi Options to the latest version?) and play again.
Good luck!

And please let me know if it worked.

I also have an Arctic Steelseries headset with wifi dongle, however although I get the freezing in game I don’t get the CTD - not so far anyway.

Yes, I agree, I just replied to another thread about freezing in the menus, and I noted it happens to me when I start a VR session (Reverb GR is tethered via USB.)

I don’t have the peripheral you have. My USB devices besides the VR headset include wired mouse, keyboard, and joystick. I need them all, so unplugging is not an option. And I should not have to unplug anything because they all work fine and it was not an issue until this update.

So that still leaves me with no solution, unfortunately…

interesting… its articles like this that have made me keep away from them .

.the corsair PC has its own monitoring system which suggests updates, and its all clear …as are all normal windows updates installed…
having said all that , LOGI options DID indeed require an update which Im now doing
The HID class one does look like it may be relevant to be fair

Are you using openxr via WMR? try setting steam as the default open XR and see how it goes. I’ve found steam to be way more stable with VR.

Thanks for your addition! I’m learning too  . It says indeed to not install older versions, so be careful. Maybe just select the HIDClass.

I can cause the sim to lock-up be simply unplugging a wireless headset transceiver from my PC. Sound continues from speakers but flight is frozen. Sometimes recovers a minute or two later, sometimes doesn’t and has to be hard killed.

This is also probably related to the KVM issue (effectively unplugging and plugging back in your mouse keyboard) and other controllers.

I agree to avoid being on the cutting edge of drivers, usually. I was having an issue with the Reverb G2, and the updated driver to address the issue was only available through the Windows Insider program, so I enabled that and now I get early release updates. Maybe that is related. I will post over at the thread talking about the freeze issue to see if there is a common denominator.

There is definitely a USB problem with this build or perhaps, as stated, Windows updates. I have an Axair Mili that destroys my fps and video card power. This was not a problem before the update. At this point I have unplugged my device until there is a fix.

Interesting..I also have a Reverb G2 , but am not on that windows insider program.
sounds interesting though …what was the issue and where did you go for that update?
From the posts here this is all feeling very USB peripheral related in the latest FS Build.. !
