Yes, I noticed that, so I guess I should have been more specific in that I don’t think they ever acknowledged it as being a problem in 2020. In any case, it was also a rhetorical question, since whether they acknowledged it or not, they never improved it in four years, and that speaks volumes. Anyway, I’m done with bug reports unless I find something really unusual that nobody else has caught. This forum gets me down. Time to go fly my Maddog.
Thank you for the reply. But I have the actual versions of IslandCreations texture and scenery of Tenerife. As for the areas of the island where coniferous trees grow and higher up towards the volcano, maybe it’s not so bad, because there really is a lot of vegetation there. But as for the lower areas and closer to the coast - in 2024 it’s just a nightmare. Everything is covered with bushes and trees where there are practically none. I contacted the developer of Island Creations of Tenerife, he said that the new version of Tenerife for 2024 with the tree fix will be released soon.
I was surprised to read in the Jan 16 Development Update that this is “Partially fixed” in patch 2 (UK). I assume this means some tree data in the UK was fixed. I’ll need to revisit my first example to take a look, but tbh I’m not optimistic…

- Vegetation: My main concern so far. At close range, vegetation, especially trees, look much more realistic. Nice to look at! However, from above, there are simply too many of them! The region, where I live and fly is caracterised by fields, meadows and forests (typical central European cultivated landscape). In MSFS 2024, it’s rather a jungle. Surprisingly, the geo-location of all these trees seems to be extremely correct (I checked it around my house - even solitary trees are perfectly located!). So, what happened? My guess is, that the algorithm, which is interpreting aerial/satellite imagery and accordingly creating autogen vegetation objects, has some trouble to distinguish hedges and bushes from trees, so everything “green” that isn’t a meadow will create a tree (or many of them). For visual orientation/navigation, this is a real issue, the more as the really well placed roads and creeks are often covert by all these autogen trees.

On the back of the patch notes I went and looked at the UK. surprisingly while there were still a few rogue trees around it seemed a lot better overall.
Maybe there is hope for this after all and it is indeed just a bug / half baked feature that’s causing the over abundance of trees. Lets hope we see more parts of the world get the same treatment if this is the case.

• also seems impossible to complete a heli search & rescue mission that requires landing close to target as ‘rugged’ terrain = too many densely populated trees and cannot land nearby to achieve or progress the mission.

That’s good to hear. I’ll go back to the Lake District where I took the first of my screenshots in the first post here, to make some comparisons.
I guess the vegetation AI needs some concept of a “tree limit”/“tree line”. Every high mountain has some altitude (may vary on different sides) over which no trees can grow. (Too low temparature, too few precipitation, not enough soil or other reasons.)
For example, on the Caldera de Taburiente (Northern half of La Palma island, Canary Islands) the top of the mountain ridge (~2400m) does not have a single tree in reality. The tree limit is 400 meters deeper at 2000m on the north side.
In MSFS2024 there’s whole forests between the telescopes of “Roque de los Muchachos” when in reality it’s only grasses and shrubs up there. (I know for sure since I’ve taken photos up there myself.)
This is definitely one root cause I’ve observed in many areas word-wide which are covered with bushes or pointy clusters of grass. Almost any green (or just dark) dots are interpreted as trees even if they are 1-2m in diameter and thus are too small to be actual trees. Admittedly it is difficult to impossible to tell small trees and bushes apart in imagery of this resolution but hey, the FS2024 already has “small tree” assets, at least in the Africal Savannah.
If such would be used for small dots it would already look more realistic than having full-sized trees in the Atacama desert, on the Etosha salt pan, on fields, on roads, railway lines or over the tree line in mountains.
Another pretty obvious example of trees which should’nt be there:
An agricultural area in northern Botswana, Africa. Of course there are sometimes single trees on fields (in Europe at least) but if you see the stripes running below the trees then it’s obvious that in these cases there are no trees in reality. Imagery in Google Earth clearly confirms this.
Coordinates: S18.715, E25.748
Definetly too many trees and way too tall. I tested in my hometown in northern europe and trees are absolutley massive and too many of them.
All houses are also just massive in my opinion.
too many trees all over the world even in iceland where there should be no trees
crop fields are full of trees even in the caribbean (martinique and guadeloupe…and other islands)
also missing trees (forest) in various places like kourou in French guyana where there should be amazonia forest (see pictures)
RPSP - Bohol Panglao Int’l airport, Philippines
Trees are really tall. Whatever fields you have are turned into forests or are covered by the really tall trees.
IRL:
MSFS 2020
MSFS 2024
From the images, it looks like 2020 has a better understanding of what grassy areas are compared to what forests are.
I wonder if they could tweak something with the AI on how it decides where to put trees and what kind of trees are being placed. While also being a bit too excessive, FS2020 had relatively decent way of putting trees even though the trees were too tall. FS2024 just cranked it up to 11 and now entire cities, fields are covered with trees.
Judging from the development roadmap, it looks like they’re fixing it per region(?) If that’s how they’re doing it it might take ages before everything is fixed!
EDIT:
Anyways, for those of you who are wondering, the airport apparently isn’t available in the default MSFS2024. The scenery I’m using is by the RPSP scenery by KER0TIN. On the map it displays as Captain Mateo Airstrip on the world map, an airfield which has the same ICAO code but is actually closed now and conflicts with this scenery.

• What irritates me the most are trees within airports area and even right next to the runway.
There was a livestream about 2 weeks ago when they explained that they had fixed the UK and the rest is scheduled for SimUpdate 2, but the status field isn’t long enough to hold this information. So maybe fixed in a few months? I’m holding my breath.
Until then (and maybe even after this) the Seasons 2024 addon (Seasons 2024 Enhanced - By Bijan - Released) might be your choice as it is said to solve the tree issue globally to some extent, besides drastically improving vegetation in specific cities and areas (like the Canary Islands).
Asobo should have hired this guy years ago, then we would have a much more natural scenery in vanilla FS2024.
Disclaimer: I haven’t installed and tested this addon myself yet because I’m waiting for the marketplace to open but there are other ways to purchase it already now.
2020 looks better than the IRL photo.
I remember them saying they have fixed the UK but I can’t remember if the fix is in SU1 or if it has been implemented already. There is a lot of work to be done on vegetation, and I appreciate it is a huge job. The sim seems to treat most bushes as trees. Flying up the Suffolk coast you see trees on the beach where there would be gorse and vegetated shingle. It is super weird. There are even trees around the base of each wind turbine on the offshore farm off the coast of Great Yarmouth.
I really hope they are able to implement a better representation of wetland habitats. The Danube Delta (which is in a photo mode mission so could be reasonably be expected to be a showcase) is rendered as grass and trees, when most of it is a wetland reedbed - the largest reedbed in the world I believe.
