Extremely slow and fluctuating download speeds

I see this happening for different files. I can only assume that their content delivery network (which I assume they do via Azure) has some issues with capacities (or spending limits) depending on location, seeing that workarounds like using a VPN to the US seem to do something for some people. I cannot fathom how we still have to talk about that here. Steam is able to update a ~140GB BG3 installation fine in very reasonable time, and every MSFS update is just a horrible experience for me, even the smallest ones.

During the last months, I’ve spent (without any exaggeration) more time doing forced updates and installations, than I could actually fly the sim, as I use the sim when I feel like it, I’m by no means a heavy user. I also don’t have the time and motivation to raise any support requests and deal with standard replies, as that is 90% of my day job already, but from the other side.

I must say it is quite appalling isn’t it. I’m sitting here with super fast broadband watching a 4.5gig download working like mad at 2.35 mbits/s. It’s truly awful. Downloading in the 1990s was faster.

I have just noticed that I have 2 updates to install.

  • an update of the World update IV (3.2 gb)
  • an update of the world update VIII (2.6 gb)
don’t know why there are updates of them, but when I download, I’am at 2-3-4 Mb/s.
Even if I have a 300 Mb internet connection

so, unable to download them.

Same issue, I have 200 Mbit/s connection, but in content manager I get ~3 Mbit/s. Please fix.

Probably city updates.

Belive the whole infrastructure for install is wrong. Been trying for some four days to install on a new rig

Had god speed untill the fs-base-cgl started to loop. 2,82 Mbit/s and for a brief moment it goes up to 80-90 to again drop back. Strange that this issues users have not yet have been fixed.

This just one thread with simular issues. Since I live in an EU country with strong consumer rights i do belive that those issues that affects users must be adressed. The Zendesk is by me just a big auto respond boot.

What the tips to adress issues with low speeds and corrupted install files is to basicly turn of all pc defens, this cant be right.

MS and Asobo must adress this issues.

This was brought up in the last Developer Update on Twitch in November under the section: “Content Manager Download Speeds”:

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/november-dev-stream-2023-transcription/619372#content-manager-download-speeds-17

Until this is fixed for those who experience this, try using a VPN to bypass this server/area.

This “netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=experimental” fixed my problem. Went from 3 mbits to 150mbits and did not even require a restart.

What did you have it set to before it was changed to “experimental”?

They are referring to this post
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=experimental

which says it is usually set to ‘normal’.

Also more info here -

I was able to use a VPN to change from Eastern US to Midwest and I went from 5 MB/s to 200 Mb/s

On east coast it fluctuated and took hours

Can someone please advise about which VPN to use? Is this (yet) another subscription? Seems weird that I should invest more money for a service that should be working out of the box.

i accidently killed my operating system 3 days ago, reinstalled it and reinstalled msfs 2020. Well, the initial install from steam, 138GB - no problem, fast.

It is NOT possible to fly again with this kind of download speed behavior, i give up!
When i see i have 100 Updates left
how long will it take to download it with that kind of speed? - impossible!

This download problem kills the game after a re-install. :-1:

Please Asobo/MSFS please this is such a waste of time, 10 mins for the sim to boot, 2GB of updates at like 2mb a second, my internet is fine. This is just such a joke. This was never the case before, it was 70-100MBits in the past what on earth is going on.

I am spending more time downloading updates than flying
Download Simulator!!! Please sort this out, its no good!

My Xbox shows 650mb inbound yet downlands are max 7mb?

Can a VPN be used via Xbox?

I’m back to being really slow / looping download again this morning. Trying to download an 1GB update to a single airport. Hope I’m wrong, but it doesn’t bode well for WU16 release next week.

I can’t even download WU16 Caribbean at all at the moment. It takes like 30 minutes for the first 100 MB (of 11 GB lol) and then it just get’s stuck.
Ridiculous.
