Been running MSFS fine until it needed an update yesterday.
Seemed stuck decompressing forever. In the end, I gave up. Uninstalled the entire thing.
Reinstalled, left computer over night. Still decompressing in the morning, same “number” in the installation process: 429/508.
I thought it was frozen, but it isn’t. It’s just unbelievably slow!
Looking in the localcache\packages\official\onestore folder, there are files called:
“fs-base-cgl-0.1.75.fspackage.xxx” (xxx is the number), and one file where that number ending counts up with a “.part” ending.
It’s been sitting with those files, slowly counting the numbers up so not frozen, for several hours now.
Why/how can it be so slow? Complete installation will take several days with this speed.
It’s a Win Store, not Steam version. Running it as Admin. Disabled Windows Defender.
Computer is i5-13600K with 32 GB RAM and m2 disk, so it shouldn’t be that slow.
Any ideas on what it’s actually doing that makes it so slow?
Trying to download a bunch of content as I put a new nvme OS drive in and loaded a fresh version of Win 11. I’m stuck at 5-8mb download speeds.
I have a gig/100 fiber. Not an issue on my end.
This has been a problem forever and it is really just insane MS has not fixed this. talk about a HUUUUUGE middle finger to their customers. Just truly an unbelievable lack of caring for their users. This is a MAJOR problem that has gone on for a LONG time. Just insane and completely UNACCEPTABLE.
I can literally get Steam updates at a rate of about 1gb every 4-6 seconds. This is the ONLY app I have an issue with.
I am about to just give up on MSFS. It’s pointless. I spend way more time screwing around trying to download updates and content then I do flying.
Please fix your broken mess of a download system. No way in heck i’m buying 2024 without proof this has been fixed 100% and I get at least close to Steam type download speeds.
I completed installing the Standard edition of MSFS today, after resolving a couple of issues - the initial 2 GB install stuck on “Queued” and being unable to log into XLive after the initial install finished. I did this over a 4G LTE cellular link with a signal strength of between -107 & -114 dBm. The 157 GB took 40.3 hours at ~ 3.9 GB/hour, or 8.67 Mbps, which is on par with other, non-MSFS downloads over my cellular link. I also downloaded the World Updates # 1 & 2 at the same speed without any issues. At no time did I see the download slow to 2-3 Mbps for any appreciable time - only for short periods, generally less than a minute or two, as files were uncompressed & new file downloads started.
Took my first flight over Yosemite with no issues. With the game-recommended “Ultra” settings, I had a wonderful flight with no glitches or stutters. Data streaming varied from less than 1 Mbps to 7 Mbps, with an average download rate of 0.87 GB/hour.
Edit 12/23/2023:
I’m providing the information above primarily to assist anyone who is thinking of using 4G LTE cellular internet service for MSFS. Sometimes, that is all that you can get (or afford). Yes, 8.67 Mbps is terribly slow compared to, say, fiber. Part of my problem is my signal strength. There is a noticeable decrease in my download speed as signal strength decreases. If my signal strength was between -70 & -90 dBm, I’d expect much faster download speeds for both non-MSFS & MSFS data. Also, 5G would be faster, but many rural areas like mine are too far from a tower to get it. I can get 5G extended range service, but only for my phone. A bigger issue is data caps set by the provider. Even after the initial 157 GB download, MSFS could quickly eat through 100 GB each month. World updates, mandatory updates, adding to the manual cache, general background “stuff” & additional free or paid optional content could easily limit you to 2-3 hrs flying a day - something to be aware of if you are used to spending a whole weekend afternoon or evening in the simulator.
I’ll be trying out Starlink early next year. Their webpage is saying download speeds in my area are 68-172 Mbps, with no data caps. I shall find out if this is correct in due course. Stay tuned!..
Just downloaded some german update package in the content manager. 35mb in 5 seconds or so?
Why Asobo/Microsoft don’t delve into those fscontent/fspatch files is really a mistery for me, because it cannot be that all is downloading so quick exept for msfs update files. And with MSFS2020 my Samsung disk should be the issue…??
For me it’s really annoying that the best sim out there has these issues because it spoils so much fun. Server issues (although i have way less then before), download issues or whatever it is should be priority 1 and for my part are more important to be solved then a next city or world update
On 4G LTE 3.9gb an hour is not bad. When you get updates, from Steam for example, at 1gb every 3-10 seconds, 3.9gb an hour is dial up slow for todays connections and tech.
I literally download Steam updates that are between 15-20gb in less then a minute on a regular basis. That’s the download and update combined. 3-8mb download speeds is completely and utterly broken and unacceptable for a game I paid 60$ for.
MS should be refunding every person who got the game at this point. I basically can’t even download any content at this point. I am not leaving my PC on for days to get all my content re-downloaded. That’s crazy.
Anyway, I hope MS change their mind and actually fix the problem. No way in heck i’m buying 2024 without 100% proof this download issue is fixed. Such an absolutely beautiful and outstanding game being ruined by an inability to provide users with reasonable download speeds. Truly sad and disappointing.
I just bought X-Plane12 on sale through Steam for 40$. It’s going up to 80$ in January. I’m about done with MSFS because of the download issue and I have been playing since the late 80’s and have purchased pretty much every iteration in the last 25 years.
Happy Holidays! I’m not nearly as crotchety as I seem. lol.
On a multiple (currently 12th, maybe infinite?) loop of trying to download a marketplace purchase aircraft (MU-2). Download gets to 238 MB(or more) and then slows down to a standstill and restarts.
Finally it gets past 238MB on the 7th attempt.
Now on 459MB and stuck again, download slows then down to zero, before restarting.
Another looped attempt and I’m up to 560MB before it starts again.
After 12th looped attempt and it still a no go. This is the worst I’ve ever seen a CM download. There’s not even a part download to go delete to free things up. It’s just impossible to install this aircraft right now. I give up. it’s crazy that this is going on with CM downloads. I never see this with any other 3rd party downloader. I’ve just wasted and hour and have nothing to show for it.
EDIT: Rebooted the sim and now it just won’t even start to download.
EDIT2: Left it in the background for an hour, no joy. Have given up installing this tonight.
been like this for over a year. VPN or not doesn’t help. I do get full speed across the rest of the internet / Steam / … so 100% sure it’s a MS/Asobo issue.
I download freeware regularly, and also payware from approx 10 other different 3rd party suppliers, and MS CM/Store is the only one with a (continual) problem. It’s a very precisely timed problem too - it was late March 2023 that it all went pear shaped. What changed back then server side? It’s not been the same since. Although I do very occasionally still get normal download speeds minus the throttling delays.
If I ever need to reinstall MP content, I’d be doomed though.

Yes

And again today very, very slow download speeds from The Netherlands:1,75Mbit/s.
The thing is that it varies a bit. Downloaded the Commander add on, which went quite smoothly. After that Shannon Airport, which started slow, but finished fast. After that some world updates. These go slow, faster, and back to crawl speed again.
There have been apologies and explanations, and seemingly two different fixes, which gave me hope. But in all honesty, nothing seems to have changed a bit…

I have the same problem. I’m on a 500 Mbit/sec / 500 Mbit/sec Internet connection, which typically does reach those speeds (or even exceeds them!), but with MSFS, downloads are most of the time in the 2 Mbit/sec range. Occasionally does the speed increase somewhat, but it quickly returns to 2 Mbit/sec. IMHO, this isn’t acceptable when I spend my money in the Marketplace. As a customer, I expect to be able to obtain the items I purchase in reasonable time.
On a 500mbps connection, trying to update a few world updates on my Xbox.
At a crawl of about 3mbps, then suddenly it jumps to around 215mbps and downloads a huge chunk in seconds, then it slows to a crawl again. It’s bizarre.

Downloading updates from content manager are slow at 2 - 2.5 Mbits/s on a 100Mbit connection. Only problem with MSFS, all other download from the Internet are at full speed. Location Germany
