I’m pretty clueless when it comes to hardware. I’ve learned a bit since jumping from Xbox to PC a year ago but a lot of these GPU/CPU comparisons confuse me. Am I right in thinking that MSFS is harder on the CPU, while 2024 is harder on GPU?
My current setup is AMD (Ryzen 7800X3D & Radeon 7900XTX) with 48gb RAM (2x 24 strips). Despite having 8gb less VRAM, is the 5080 better than what I have? Would it even be considered an upgrade? Furthermore, would replacing my CPU with a 9800X3D help?
I hear AMD’s latest GPUs are out end of March but I’m told they’ll be below the 7900XTX, which will remain their top card?
In a nutshell, is it worth upgrading or is what I have still cutting-edge?
I’d stick with what you have for at least another generation or 2. You have a good system.
MSFS (20 and 24) is hard on both those things but you’re probably right that the swing is a little bit as you wrote. You need both though. You’re good.
In VR the more VRAM you have the better though. In 2D it’s not as critical.
I really don’t think anything can run it perfectly at all times and locations, especially when you add that other stuff like FSLTL etc. Some of the included modelling and just something deep in the scenery / streaming engine is really badly optimised that stutters are inevitable unless they can really sort it at the software end. Some of the default hand crafted airports are really really heavy.
I’d hate to spend a small fortune upgrading an already top end system to end up with basically the same problems.
But seeing the benefit the latest DLSS can bring, just through software, with the same hardware, just goes to show how important the software side is to make the most of the hardware we have. We need Asobo to do some serious optimisation of the way it all works. 2024 is a good step with the better distributed multithreaded architecture but there is some issues with objects and specific places around the world that a Supercomputer couldn’t brute force its way through currently. I suggest waiting and seeing.
That would be the cheapest thing to upgrade but I’m not sure the extra 16gb would do much for performance. My RAM usage typically sits at about 35%, whenever I’ve looked (that does tend to be while in mid-air, though).
Thanks. I’m certainly not looking to upgrade immediately… if at all. But chasing smoothness does seem to be an addictive hobby among flightsimmers!
Have you seen this video on YouTube on how to decrease the resolution of FSLTL aircraft textures? Makes a huge difference FPS wise if you’re willing to compromise on texture quality (noticable at close distance like parked at gates). https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/Gt3iWQW43Po
