When you have more or equal then 12 GB VRam on a card installed then it can’t be a hardware limitation. It’s pure nonsence what they say.
It’s there own statement of a part in a ideal configuration.
No!
GPU usage needs to be reasonable. I deliberately chose my settings to average my GPU usage around 60%. I could use TAA instead of DLSS quality, but that would run my 3080 at 95% or more all the time. Which results in more heat, more fan noise and more energy consumption. Plus, there is no headroom for intense situations (bad weather, GPU heavy location, etc.)
Yes!
Ideally you want to be GPU bottlenecked because it minimizes stutter (it processes bigger and less complex chunks of data). And yes an unused GPU means you could have bought a cheaper one. If you buy a 4090 and you use 60% of it you might aswell buy a 3070 and use it 100%.
But i think we’re off topic here don’t you think. This is a bug report about high VRAM usage so lets move on.
Fully agreed. Also, if anyone is having this bug, don’t forget to vote if you haven’t already. The more visibility this thing has, the more likely it is to move up the priority list.
I don’t agree and from my experience it is never good to have 100% usage, be it GPU or CPU.
As I said, if you are always at 100% usage, you have no resources left for when the situation demands more.
I upgraded for comfort and performance.
While I do agree its good to utilize your hardware, I also upgraded my hardware because I didn’t want the noise and heat that you get from a computer pegged at 100%.
Now I run quieter and cooler at locked 50fps.
and with some headroom to spare when needed.
Let’s get back on the topic of testing everyone. Before the mods close this down for off topic. We need to test when and how the VRAM bugs occur. Please share your settings, scenarios and aircraft used when you’re getting high VRAM usage.
Thanks everyone.
Hi,
i have the same problems.
Specs:
OS: Windows 11
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800x3d
GPU: RTX 4070 Super
RAM: 65GB
Bandwith: 250 Mbps
Do you know what the error message “OVER RETAIL BUDGET” means?
You exceeded your total available RAM.
When you have 32GB RAM in your PC, than that’s your “retail budget”… you bought 32GB RAM.
So when your system used 34GB RAM, you are 2GB “OVER RETAIL BUDGET”
But be aware; this is not the RAM usage by MSFS only. This is the total RAM usage of your system. When you want to see the RAM usage by MSFS only, you will need Rivatuner Statistics Server for instance.
As you can see in the screenshot below, my total system RAM usage is 30GB (and it even peaked at 37GB … so I’m so glad I upgraded to 64GB RAM) … but MSFS only uses 8.89GB RAM.
What in the world is using up all your RAM?
stamenet about “no resources” makes no sense - that’s not how GPU’s work - 100% usage should always be the target!
It would be good to know what Asobo make of all of this, beyond advising the community that the bug has been logged. If the community’s suspicions are correct, and that the implementation of DX12 is, shall we say, suboptimal, what do Asobo plan to do, and over what time frame?
If I had to be cynical I would say that the fix will come in the form of MSFS 2028, in the same way the multicore fix was implemented for MSFS 2024. I’d like to think that this will not be the case. Likewise for the optimal implementation of VR.
I applaud Asobo for advancing MSFS, but surely a proper DX12 implementation should be commanding most of their attention, given that it is not a beta feature, and is a fundamental component of the software.
My tests are running MSFS 2024 version 1.2.7.0 (patch 3), 4K resolution, RX 6800 XT, 7800X3D, 32 GB RAM, NVMe using DLSS Enabler for using frame generation with AMD GPU. I need frame generation to get good FPS with high quality. Mod works for both MSFS 2020 and 2024.
DLSS Enabler at Modding Tools - Nexus Mods
Have tried loading latest Fenix A320 at EKCH (default, as Flytampa cannot work for me) and EKBI (default and one from flightsim.to).
It seems frame generation overloads GPU VRAM to a degree where FPS drops massively, to like 15-25 FPS, when panning around or changing camera, like ‘cockpit’ to ‘showcase’. It then needs some seconds to settle down again and FPS normalizes again to around 50-60. This with texture resolution at high, and even medium, and general quality at high, and TAA, no DLSS.
Lower texture resolution can help, lowering to medium seems to allow that little extra room to make these drops be less aggressive. Anyways, it keeps maxing out VRAM at almost 14 GB. For comparison, MSFS 2020 stays at 10 during replicated tests and is rock solid changing camera. No spikes.
Would be nice with room enough to not have to lower texture resolution, and to use frame generation without overloading VRAM. And also to have native support for frame generation on AMD GPUs and lower level NVIDIAs.
Frame Generation requires the GPU to store more textures, in your case at 4k… could potentially require an additional 2-3GB of VRAM. I do believe your issue is most likely RAM as 32GB is really cutting it fine.
- What is your sim RAM usage?
- Check in your task manager how much Shared GPU memory you have
- Do you have any other applications open while running the sim - I noticed a visible performance decrease just by having a single browser session open
- Do you dock the Settings/Controls/Camera features on a second screen
Settings that most affect VRAM on (my setup)
- Texture Resolution (Ultra)
- Raytraced Shadows (Off)
- FG (Off)
- LOD (300)
- 4K (rather use 2k and scale to 125/130 - still looks good but buys you a little headroom)
I also use TAA
With my 16GB VRAM the game gets assigned 14,5GB, and it will try to use this amount. If you only have 8GB it will assign less, maybe 7GB, but it will still work with that amount.
I think the problem is when you turn on frame generation the game still tries to use the 14,5GB and the memory management doesn’t take into account it needs to reserve the 2 or 3 GB for frame generation.
Anyone running this game at 4k HIGH on 8GB VRAM has a very special graphics card LOL
It was an example the numbers in the example don’t matter.
When i render at 1440p the sim still uses 14GB VRAM with medium settings. That’s what i call special.
My point was that FG uses VRAM from the normal budget and the game doesn’t reserve some VRAM for FG. This also explains why only high end cards have the problem as only those have FG.
the good thing about this is you become an expert in vram management, i find that these are things you have to keep an eye on because they are truly vram hogs
graphic settings:
render resolution
texture resolution
offscreen pre cache
and complex airliners and complex handcrafted airports
you can pretty much squeeze your way around this problem if you avoid all that
If your VRAM usage is 14GB at 1440p on MED then I’m afraid to say something is seriously wrong on your system, have you tried re-installing the sim?
