Freedom Fox (Trent Palmer's Kitfox) by developer Parallel 42

A FF update was teased in the last Dispatch email. If you want true inside scoop into //42. Might want to sign up! beep, beep…

Because Trent didn’t want it that way, and he doesn’t want his art on any plane not accurately representing “Freedom Fox”. Notice a prior fox no longer bundles the livery? Yea that…

If you want to experience FreedomFox as accurately as possible, it will be in a specific variant, of our aircraft.

We set out to represent his specific aircraft as the iconic plane that it is, succeeded, earned the signature, and will continue to protect it in it’s purest and officially licensed form.

I can’t stop you from creating a livery of FreedomFox for Fox2 (fan art), but I’ll rest easy knowing that we respected our agreement with Trent and were not strong-armed by someone yelling online in caps. Whatever happens on your end after that, is not on us. That’s the end of this conversation.

The new update has been released, at least on Orbx:

UPDATE: FreedomFox/Fox2 study-level suspension, car horn, GTN750 support, & more! | by Parallel 42 | Feb, 2023 | Medium

I like the option of having a GTN750 (either PMS50 or TDS) instead of the second G3X screen. The new suspension feels really good on the ground.

A bit surprised that idle power lets the plane roll as soon as I release the brakes. Don’t remember that from the previous versions.

One thing that still seems wrong is stall behavior. Trent demonstrated in the video linked below that a stall is a total non-event in his FreedomFox. But in the sim, the plane abruptly drops a wing (always the left one for me) whenever I get in a stall. That is especially critical in a short field landing, where I had the left wing drop a few feet above the ground several times, always resulting in the wing touching the ground. I really hope that can be fixed in a future version!

I trust you but I’m finding it hard to believe they dropped the ball in something so fundamental as stall behavior. This plane is basically designed to be stalled.

I haven’t updated yet so I just hope you are wrong.

I would love to be wrong  As far as I remember, this stall behavior was already there before the update. So on your system the FreedomFox does not drop a wing in a stall?

One other thing I noticed, even though I have installed the TDS mod, the plane still uses the PMS50 GTN750. I am using the Addons Linker tool, so the error might be on my side, but I checked the links and the p42-fox2-tds directory is linked in the community folder.

It’s been a long time since I got the Fox and I haven’t used it lately but I can’t remember such a problem when stalling, I normally stall all my STOL planes (my tongue is now twisted) so I think I would remember such a problem, will check this update but dropping wings in stall is a big nono.

The wing drop on stall and the G3X are my two biggest gripes with the Fox. I’m glad the 750 is being added to mitigate one of those two problems. I hope the aerodynamics are looked at again, too. Many planes out there have benign stalls so I doubt it’s impossible to fix.

Just tried it before the new update:

Plane roll as soon as I release the brakes.
Plane drops left wing when stalling.

Isn’t a wing drop on stall normal depending on technique and conditions?

Granted, according to Freedom, the flaperons should help avoid this as the wing stalls before the flaperons, but, especially given there’s no physical feedback in the sim, a slight imbalance of aileron, or perhaps a “crosswind” component or gust, could pretty easily cause a wing drop on stall it seems to me… Maybe I’m wrong?

The Kitfox along many other STOL planes are designed to avoid this. It should have good roll authority even very close to a stall. Many planes maintain roll authority to a degree even while stalling.

Again, I was asking… You said it dropped a wing, you didn’t say it lost roll authority. I was asking if the dropped wing in stall perhaps had something to do with outside factors and was therefore “correct”? Yes, according to the manufacturer it should maintain roll authority in stall.

If it’s always the left wing, I don’t think it’s anything but the aerodynamic modeling of the plane itself. But I can only speculate. It happens in different wind conditions.

hmm got the plane and flies nothing like a flaperon aircraft, I have been flying the Eurofox for now over 5 years, when you pitch down you get speed the same fashion as a brick out of a balcony…

Trying this model (and also comparing it to the Xplane version of the Eurofox which simulate this perfectly) this is not represented, you can stay bang on 55kts in very short field with quite a pitch down which is not how flaperons works.

Not sim-limitation either as stuff like the SWS Skyjeep, also with flaperons, does that very well.

It is fun by all means however it seems a generic flight model based on classic flaps. Not sure if anyone with also IRL experience on similar aircraft has noted this

Did this thing ever get the CFD treatment? Or still not worth picking up?

We’re not pleased with it yet… we’re still working on that.

That being said, once we release it, it will be as a mod that can be enabled in Mod Manager or available on flightsim.to. It’s too big of a change to impose on everyone.

A mod won’t work for xbox users. Hopefully once you’re happy that it’s flying better with CFD than without then the xbox release will be updated too.

Just got the Freedom Fox package and really enjoy flying the plane, but I too noticed the left wing drop. On my takeoff run just as the plane leaves the tarmac I get an excessive roll to the left everytime and my airspeed is good (no stall warning) requiring some quick action on my part to get her back to level flight. I generally stall this, and the other Cub based planes in the sim, upon landing and have not noticed this same roll to the left or a left wing drop during this phase of my flight, just on takeoff. I tried easing back on my takeoff power at the start of my takeoff run thinking it may have more to do with an engine/prop torque, but it still does it. Just my 2 cents worth note.

My friend and I bought this plane last night and we’re having a lot of fun with them! I also noticed the pretty violent roll to the left but chalked it up to the 11 knot crosswind coming from the starboard side. Same with the wing dropping at stall speed. An 11 knot wind for sure will keep one wing flying longer than the other in my mind. Anyway I flew for maybe 90 minutes today, the plane sips fuel. However it only seems to be drawing from the starboard side tank? Is there a fuel tank selector valve or something I’m missing? Thanks for any help you can afford. Fly safe!

Just downloaded the “package” on Xbox and I do not get the bush landing areas. Anyone else with this problem?

Did you get the “package” that includes the strips (Complete) or the one that doesn’t (Base)?
