FS keeps crashing and shutting down PC

Time and time and time again, ever since I purchased FS it has ALWAYS been unstable. I can fly for about 20 to 30 minutes. It is very smooth while flying. Discovery flights, ect. But I can never complete a flight before it crashes, and recently it completely shuts the PC down? In the past, I have spent a massive amount of time sorting out the CTDs and Shutdowns. I am NEVER going to be able to fix this. Whether Community folder is empty, whether I lower or change the settings, disable BitDefender, ect, it makes no difference. ALL the latest FS, Nvidia, Windows, ect, updates. The hardware is a 11th Gen Intel i9-11900K, super water cooled, a RTX3090 GPU, 32GB Ram, 2TB Gen4 SSD, 1000w PSU. Super Fast Broadband. All other Apps and graphics intensive games, including Aerofly FS2 and VR run well, NEVER crash. And forget the VR in FS, barely runs for 2 minutes before crashing. I am NOT spending any more time sorting this problem out with FS. I still like flying FS monitor mode, and the superb scenery, but I accept that it will crash the PC probably before landing. That is the UNSTABLE FS for me.

A PC shuts down to protect itself and usually indicates a driver or hardware fault. First action is to check all temperatures are within limits, your cooling is topped up and all fans are working properly.
MSFS performance is still in development so basically it has no upper limits, those other games do.

All fans are working as they should including when under load, and the Asus cooling check app shows the CPU and GPU are NOT overheating. A system check shows NO conflicting or dodgy drivers, and are all updated.

Then I suspect your PSU. But before you run off to replace it you may want to examine your Windows logs leading up to the system crash. Another possible is bad or overly clocked ram.

This ^^

I have experimented and came to the conclusion that slightly under-clocking my RAM fixed potential CTDs to the extent I don’t have any.

IMO that generally means cheap no-name ram including forgeries so I hope you didn’t pay a lot.

I had the exact same problems, and I have the same processor and graphics card. I managed to get rid of it by updating the BIOS. It’s worth a try.

same problem that i have in last week… solve by change the 32GB of ram with a GOOD ram.

Corsair change for g.skill

Thanks. I have other graphics intensive games when the fans start to kick in, but they never shut the PC down. I have already done a Ram check with the Corsair Ram, which took several hours. No problem detected, and the bios shows they are running at normal speed, No overclocking on CPU or Ram.

They are good quality Corsair Ram. Lengthy ram test shows ok. And no overclocking.

Thanks. It is the latest Bios.

Thanks. Good quality Corsair Ram, done a lengthy ram test, no problem found. No OC on ram or cpu.

You’re welcome. But you must understand that you are currently the only one on here and for quite a while with this complaint so you can pretty much rule out MSFS2020 as the cause. It contributes for sure but the main problem lies with your PC. I still say you need to test your PSU for any spikes.

Good luck in your endevours.

Hello @ExceededBull193,

While crashes in MSFS can occur, they usually result in a CTD, not a PC shutdown. As others have noted above, if your entire PC is shutting down, it is likely your computer is experiencing a hardware issue of some kind and it is shutting down to protect itself. These can be difficult to troubleshoot, but some common items to check are your RAM (run MemTest86 overnight to check it), power supply (make sure yours is rated with enough wattage for your PC’s components, especially your GPU) and fans/cooling (buy a can of compressed air and blow out your fans to keep them clear of dust).

Good luck!

Thanks,
MSFS Team

Want to drop my 2 cents here.

Once I had massive issues with X-Plane where it would crash (blue screen) only when on X-Plane. I know it’s different sim but what I did was run the Intel processor diagnostic tool and found my CPU was at fault and failed the tests most of the time. Got it replaced (it was an i7 9th gen K) and its been perfect for years now.

BTW, Before I had tested with that tool I had noticed if I turned off turbo in the bios, it would never crash, which lead me to believe it was a faulty chip.

Since you say you never crash / shutdown while not in MSFS what Im about to say may not apply to you but I’ll give the anecdote anyway: One time on a friends PC where it would randomly shutdown we found it was a faulty power button on the case itself. We replaced the button and harness that goes to motherboard and fixed the issue. The funny part (you sometimes have to laugh at your misfortunes) is we figured that out only after replacing everything else on that PC. The point is that sometimes the culprits are less obvious.

Hope that helps. I know the frustration!

Follow this you have nothing to lose…

Thank You. FS is the only game/sim that shuts down my PC. All other game, sims and apps do not cause any problem. I find it hard to believe that the 1000w Corsair PSU, as it is new, and replaced 860w PSU that I wanted for my previous PC to sell. However, I will find some PSU testing app. Even the 860w PSU did not appear to cause any problem. As far as I know, setting the Bios to default resets the OC back to normal, or does it? Maybe someone can give me the Bios settings for the ROG Maximus XIII HERO motherboard so I can check the Intel i9-11900K cpu clock speed, and the Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3000MHz (clock speed) 2x16GB ram chips. I have already performed a hefty time consuming MEM check on the RAM, and NO problems found. Thanks for all advice and help.

Did you run all the above commands? And are you running and/or have installed any keyboard/audio app/s?

I say no more

Did you ever solve this? Since 11/12, I’ve been having horrendous crash/reboots, and I’ve tried a TON of different things. (A new PSU is on the way.) But, still curious, as hard crash reboots only occur with FS for me too.
