I’ve managed to hit more or less the sweet spot where I’m getting throttled by both CPU and GPU somewhat evenly, and getting a nice 30 most of the time (though still will funk with nvidia settings). Issue is, when looking at the framerate devtool it keeps screaming at me about being “over retail budget”:
What is that, exactly? I’m assuming it’s not good, but I’m not seeing an immediate performance hit when crossing these borders, so I’m stumped on which setting should I adjust. Texture res?
(this particular scenario had me in single-digits fps, but it’s above Manhattan - other areas did not have such a massive load, but a set like 19/5 GB is still above and had basically no repercussions)
I’ve “soft” tested the dynamic FPS and it works. What I mean by that is I adjusted my settings to mostly get about 30 fps, but would dip down into the 20s. With it on, it does good job of keeping a steady 30
What I haven’t done is go bonkers with the setting, resulting in 7 fps, and expecting it to get me to 30. So, I basically gave it a realistic target and it did a good job. I think that’s what it was designed to do, so that’s how I’m using it.
I’ve now gone one step further and combined it with a 30 fps cap; the sim is now impressively smooth (for me, YMMV).
To recap, it works if:
You tune your settings to give it a realistic target
It means it’s gone over the available VRAM and RAM limit. Once this happens, it starts to use virtual memory (not shown by dev mode fps counter), which is stored on your harddrive/SSD/NVME. The drive is much slower than VRAM so things can start to stutter, massive fps drops.
Interesting, thanks for the explanation. I suspect this explains some of the stuttering I’ve experienced. When it happens it’s abrupt and bad, then shortly after goes back to being smooth. Seems to happen a lot during takeoff, annoyingly.
Please… I have a ROG Zephyrus G14 2022, which plays nicely the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on high graphics, but it keeps crashing all the time… Can you help me find the best settings?
My laptop configuration:
ROG Zephyrus G14
-AMD Ryzen™ 9 6900HS Mobile Processor (8-core/16-thread, 16MB cache, up to 4.9 GHz max boost)
-AMD Radeon™ RX 6700S ROG Boost: up to 100W(SmartShift) with 8GB GDDR6
-40GB DDR5-4800 of RAM
this is good, just have to keep in mind that he’s gpu bottlenecked everywhere.
sometimes performance gets crippled due to cpu bottlenecks, and turning down certain settings will have no positive performance impact while the graphics become worse.
@TheOriginalBabu Huge thanks for all this work!
Out of curiosity are the recommended settings the ones you use yourself? I have almost identical specs as you and I struggle to reach 40fps in the Fenix at a 3rd party airport, is this what you’d expect to get?
