Fussing about MSFS-2024?

Ref:

Greetings!

Reading these forums it appears that opinions about 2024 are divided into two broad categories:

  1. It walks on water, talks to the angels and sits at The Right Hand Of God.  (And is a Golden Thing Of Beauty.)

  2. It’s a piece of unmitigated GAGH!, and “the refund version,” (i.e. Not buying it), is the best version.

What gives?

I understand that it’s new, rushed to market, and has its share of bugs that should have never seen the light of day.  IMHO, this is true for 90% of the software I’ve been involved in, or that I’ve seen in the wild - both FOSS and commercial payware, so it’s not entirely unexpected.

So, what’s the real deal here?  Are people overreacting?  Is it totally borked beyond all recognition?

You are asking on the Internet if people overreact on the Internet? You should see Reddit, lol. They are planning a march to the office of Asobo I think.

Yeah the over reactions are plentiful… I feel sorry for their spouses, partners , or who ever… I just mute all the threads like that so I don’t have to continually see them.

Well just read the threads with the actual issues and there are plenty to get a feel of how bad or good it is. It is very subjective on how you fly i guess but ive just read windsocks are reversed and ATC assigns runways with tail winds, for a gamer prob not an issue for a serious simmer these are breaking and excatly the same as 2020 so its your decision really

Actually I was asking on the MSFS forums where I believed the signal to noise ratio would be higher.

My marketing opinion:

MS should have been open about it being only partially implemented at purchase time and that they were, in essence, asking for people to pay money to be guinea pigs.

IMHO, the correct marketing decision would have been to release ONE version - the super-duper premium tier version with all the goodies (the $200 version), for the price of the el-cheapo standard version as an inducement to install, test, and report bugs.  At least until it is substantially complete then release everything at the original price points.

I’d say don’t focus too much on people raging online. Most of the times that’s called the “loud minority”. People who are dissatisfied with something get more vocal than people who are fine or satisfied which also is a common problem on product reviews done by random persons.

To me MSFS24 has some flaws and bugs but due to the sheer size and complexity of the whole project I don’t consider that something devastating. The iniBuilds Airbus aircraft alone to me are worth the price tag of the whole simulator. For the remaining bugs and flaws I still see 4 or more years of active development on the horizon (not like with the original FSX release which will forever have that memory leak as it was just roughly patched two times).

Having purchased the game yesterday on Steam, I have conducted two flights in a default Cessna 172. I had held off from buying it because of all the issues people were having even installing the game.

I am pleased to say I have had no real issues so far with the game. Good frame rates and beautiful graphics, though I will admit that I have only been flying from/to a very quiet airfield (CJD3 - Birch Hills, SAS). I want to get all my settings right and get used to the new and improved flight physics before I move onto bigger aircraft and busier airports.

My only gripe at the moment is that I was not able to copy over my yoke and keyboard settings from FS20. So now I am spending hours setting/testing over and over. I’ll get there one day.

I thought I`d try the crop sprayer this morning. Engine starts but wont keep running and i have a {careful here} vertically challenged hermunculus sat on my lap in the cockpit in 2d and vr. Oh well never mind.

deserved tho. even as a big defender of MS/Asobo, this sim is a horrible experience in many ways and i prefer MSFS right now.

Neglecting and denying the obvious and many many issues, doesnt bring us anywhere.

the old “it works for me, so if it doesn’t work for anyone else I don’t respect them” strategy.

It can be used the opposite way too. “It doesn’t work for me, so if it works for anyone else I don’t respect them.”

You do have a way with words @Jimrh1993. I had a good chuckle reading that.

It just needs time in the oven is all. I can see the potential underneath, and I’m having great fun so far as long as I pick my airports carefully based on performance. See FPS performance - VRAM bug?

Yes, some threads can get a bit rowdy, some rightly so, but I believe at the end of the day, we all just want a good working sim that we can spend our time in, doing whatever it is we do.

Will it get there? I have to hope and believe it will.

It appears that. . . .
A. Are people overreacting?
B. Is it borked beyond all recognition?
C. All of the above.

. . . “C” is the correct answer as I see it.

I’m tempted to get it, but I hesitate to plank down my hard-earned cash for a “little grey Volkswagen with three flat tires”.[1]

I’m thinking of spending the $$$ on a better set of controls first.

==================== Footnotes ====================

  1. This is a quote from an anecdote I read years ago that is both hysterically funny and would likely get me banned if I repeated it here.

I don’t think this is true, certainly not seen any evidence of it myself. Some people are just relatively happy with it despite the many flaws.

People who have problems type, and people who have no problems fly.

The problem with these “Its working for me” posts is - they blame very often the users for the issues they have.

“Its working for me, I think the peering of your ISP is the problem” is a classic these days.
“I think its your low spec PC, I have a 4090 and everything is working wonderfully”

Probably this help to understand the difference.

PS: Why are people in the Forums instead of flying if everything is working wonderfully? Just enjoy others are suffering? I would invest my time in flying if my sim would work properly. Nothing to care about right?

The motivation for the people with problems is very clear. They want to be heard so that their problems can be solved.

What is the motivation going in Forums and telling people that for yourself everything is working fine? Please let me know your motivation.

It’s a buggy mess and currently way short of delivering what was promised; visuals in 2D and VR are not as crisp via the servers as MS 2020. Performance in VR is woeful.

On the plus side, the screenshots here and especially on Reddit are hilarious, as was the look on Jorg’s face in the recent mea culpa video when all his marketing gaslighting was shown up for what it was.

Give it time, when the streaming improves and the worst of the bugs are fixed it will be much better. I truly want it to be a success, as it is capable of so much.

After all, its Limitless! lol

Well. . . .  I’ve always enjoyed writing and I can “wax eloquent” at times - which usually gets me in trouble with the moderators!

As a former software QA analyst, (before I retired), these data-points are incredibly valuable.  The fact that SOME people appear to be having less of an issue than others implies that there are factors outside the game that influence playability.

What’s missing is a detailed description of what people are doing, the equipment they’re using, their internet connection and provider, the location of their rig, etc.

Maybe we discover that everyone that uses Comcast has a lousy experience and those using SuperISP in the UK does wonderfully?

Maybe we should separate the “the game stinks because “X” feature is missing and the cat in the co-pilot’s seat is a Golden Retriever” from the “the game stinks because “X” fails miserably and I BSOD every time I sneeze” type problems.

This would allow people to correctly judge for themselves if the deficiencies are such that they’re OK with the game as-is, or if they should wait for later versions.

What say ye?

I’m loving 2024……..and probably had to wait 2 days for it to work “properly”, so by no means a huge deal in my mind. I do think more updates should have come out of MS/Asobo though and feel their silence fuelled the disappointment in many. Expectations were set high (by the devs).
