I work on the Delaware River and have for nearly 30 years. I’ve worked thousands of ships, so many that I’ve lost count. We handle approximately 1500 vessels per year at my facility. I’m just sitting here coming to the realization that with live shipping I could be flying in MSFS one day and watch a ship sail up the Delaware to my place, and I’ll end up working it. Then I can watch it sail away afterwards. Simply incredible. I just might find myself shedding a tear of joy. The planet is getting smaller everyday.
There is a YouTube creator named Chief Makoi who makes some awesome videos, he’s a Chief Engineer from the Philippine Islands. He recently joined a new vessel and he posted one photo of his vessel without posting the name. Crazy part, I instantly recognized the ship because I’d worked it 3 or 4 days before he posted the picture.
The ship has a basketball hoop setup on hatch 5’s cover with the words “Covid 21” on the backboard, and two Bacardi Rum emblems painted on the deck. I figure the crew must have had a hell of a New Years party in 21, probably while confined on the ship due to quarantine.
This is my pic of that ship, (we discharged 51,000 tons of salt)
I think your designs are fantastic. Would be great to eventually see some SE Asian fishing boats - soooo much coastline begging to be populated with fishing fleets!
However, they are better to place live than with fixed routes as they are small and requires a lot of routes and thereby performance drag if you want to have a realistic density - with the real time traffic we just load the ones around the plane.
This is looking really exciting - I already use AIGs aircraft traffic and GAIST - to have them combined will be fantastic.
So what’s next? Sure I’ve seen a mod that enhances the road traffic to include a better variety of vehicles. Then surely someone will “do” trains? Just needs a bit of modelling, sort out the tracks and import railway schedules! (“Just” he says, having no idea of how to programme these things in the first place!)
I’m in awe of you developer guys.
I loaded up X-Plane the other day for the first time in over a year and forgot how it had trains going about doing their train thing. It pleased me to see them and I hope they come to MSFS one day. I’d be happy with just having the railways themselves being more than just flat 2d aerial imagery you can barely make out, a basic physical railway object that stands out more so you can follow them for VFR flight would be awesome.
With regard to a payware global shipping addon (not named as I have no wish to derail the thread or for there to be a discussion on potentially ‘competing’ products) apparently wakes are affecting sim performance.
I wondered if that was also the case with this addon too.
Irrespective of this, I think it is a fantastic mod anyway especially as it is freeware
Apologies if this has already been discussed in this large thread
Everything you put in the sim affects performance… the question is how much… So, if you make longer wakes or more intense wakes - that is more visible - or increase the draw distance so they can be seen from further away or you just increase the density of the ship traffic so you have more wakes - and more models and polygons and textures - it will affect performance… All the wakes including the wakes introduced by Asobo with the Top Gun are done in the same way and do have an impact. As Kaiii mentioned above we have with the Real Time version stress tested the sim as we can with the Real Time traffic increase density a lot compared to what is possible with bgl based traffic and that can have an impact, but if you use the current Beta impact is neglible.
Personally I tried not to do the wakes too long and I also did them less intense in order not to run into trouble. Also the ship models in the Global AI Ship Traffic project are developed for simming - that is they are low polygon and also with smaller and less textures - yes, that decreases the visual beauty if you are very close, but it is beneficial in reducing the impact on performance.
We have for the next release for comparison around 1600 different ships including 725 unique ship models giving on average a bit more than two different liveries per model, we have 11.500 texture sheets giving an average of “just” 7.2 texture sheets per model - minimum would in MSFS be four as you need for every model as standard an albedo, a composite, a normal, and an emissive texture. And total installation size of 10.8 GB.
Romulo Almeida here is done with the standard number of texture sheets 4 and including two repaints total file size is 8.7MB.
In the screenshot further up in thread from the real time test she and a couple of similar models were used as stand in for all tankers in Singapore with hardly no impact on performance.
Thank you Henrik for the very comprehensive reply. Much appreciated
The amount of time you have devoted to this excellent mod (you are clearly a perfectionist) whilst steadfastly refusing to accept any recompense is very worthy and has earned my respect.
Please reserve a bit of free time for yourself though.
Yesterday I thought of it again as I tested @Kaiii3 injection software and realized that we are very, very close to having a truly global AI ship traffic with realistic models - while it was from the beginning something I wanted to do I never thought it would be possible. But now we are almost there - and reading @WaldoP3pper 's post above i was also about to shed a tear…
Especially as yesterday and today the tanker Angelica Schulte which was one of my first models and actually pictured in the French post mentioned above was visiting WaldoP3pper’s Delaware River…
There is a sense of adventure with shipping I think. I live not that far away from Avonmouth Docks in the UK and when you see an enormous car transporter ship arriving in the estuary, your mind cant help wondering where its come from, what the crew encountered on the journey and what sights they saw.
Seeing live ships in the sim arriving and leaving ports and docks is something I am very much looking forward too.
I dont live within sight of Avonmouth, I am further south with plenty of terrain between my town and it. I see these ships coming up the estuary on their way to Avonmouth. That puts me anywhere from North Cornwall towards Somerset and beyond in practice. But its an interesting place to pass on the M5.
