As part of the solution set to the graphics glitch a while ago, Microsoft itself recommended we revert to a more stable version of the Nvidia graphics drivers. And that was a useful recommendation because Nvidia archives its drivers. Now that my experience of this 18 month old sim has become increasingly frustrating, perhaps there’s a lesson for MS here. (By frustrating I mean that before SU7, I could fire up the sim when I had 45mins to spare and have a reliably entertaining experience every time. Now, the odds of running into some sort of flight-killing glitch are about 75%.)
Now, considering that MS is selling us the thrilling idea of its committing a decade of development to this platform, we now also know that means what looks like a very frustrating decade of hit and miss updates. The sim breaks, addons break, etc etc etc. SO, why can’t MS archive each version so that if one is glitchy, we can revert to that last best? (Developers would have to agree to follow suit, and I’m sure they would because, like MS, they spend a lot of time telling us about how much they care about this hobby.)
Currently, the whole design philosophy of the sim clearly means that it sucks to be invested in it because its going to break every few months. For example, right now, there’s a whole host of really obvious bugs across the platform (planes, graphics, controllers, performance, etc etc) that were introduced by SU7, and which MS is showing no clear haste in addressing. Sure, all the marketing and dev videos are profoundly heartwarming, but recently, they are ringing a bit hollow. So, MS, if you’re not going to give us a chance to enjoy the sim YOU want, give us a choice to enjoy the sim WE have. Please archive each version.
I wonder if the new “public beta” format will essentially become this (except in the opposite order). It would make sense; instead of users updating and then rolling back when they see that the new version is bugged to hell and back, people would save time by letting the braver among us tell them how it is.
Once all the bugs have been worked out, then force everyone to update. That’d also make downloading on release days a heck of a lot easier.
Yes totally agree . Working in IT as i do the usual thing we do roll out bata testing to a few to see what issues there might be . Try to fix them before rolling out to all . But with MSFS they seem to force bata testing on all . Then while everyone is having issues try to fix the issues . Can you not get a group of beta testers to try the new UD first .
That’s just demonstrably not true. They have introduced beta testing since a few updates already, and specifically the last one was even an open one for everyone to take part and test the patch for SU7. They did fix things that were reported. Nobody reported the issues the OP is having, so how do you, as someone working in the IT, expect they should have fixed them?
In response to the OP your request more than likely won’t happen as it’s all cloud based and a “moving target” if you will.
What - simply - needs to happen is better Quality Control and a better Beta Period Structure, but this drum has been banged since the very beginning and it’s falling on deaf ears.
Well, as someone who actually was in the public beta, I can honestly say “a roll-back” never even crossed my mind. The vast majority did not “see” the new release to be “bugged to hell and back”, the last three weeks of the four week beta the discussion was only about weather, driven by few users, who are still actively advocating how the weather is “broken”.
Asobo should fix what they CAN …. and then stop !!!
The community can work around 99% of the things. HOW MANY UPDATES DID FSX GET ?
And i like the update thing introduced with FS2020 … but unfortunately Asobo have proven that they are incapable off handling issues in a fast and efficient matter.
Had more “fun” in FSX … and all the workarounds where made by the community !
This topic will get closed soon just as all the other postings about updates. It seems that the moderators do not want this discussed. Not sure why. I LOVE MS2020 but I don’t like what the updates do to my flying experiences. I just want to fly and not have to do “work arounds” and/or buy third party “fixes” because the last update made things that normally worked great no longer work. I would much prefer if the updates were only once a month BUT that they were completely checked out before they were released. Making us all BETA testers by releasing buggy updates is not, IMHO, a good way to keep going forward. FWIW
You are so very correct. Makes me think the “In House” testers are very few in numbers!
…
I retired from a Federal IT organization and If our testing before release of new software was as problematic as these releases, I would have been relieved of duty or so embarrassed that our teams may have been disbanded.
Because it will change nothing and as you say, people keep coming up with the same stuff (the same people? dunno, but maybe…).
It isn’t viable for this sim - live with it. You can always go and fly FSX if it’s so much more ‘fun’, as someone said above. If it’s more fun, why are they here whinging?
I’ll give you my take on this.
Prior to SU7, there were a series of updates to the World Updates that we have.
To me that suggests that to fix some issues, Asobo had to go back to the start and fix some basic things.
I think the reason for that is to set the sim up for SU8, which is supposed to fix a lot of outstanding issues.
Some of these issues probably couldn’t be corrected with a simple patch.
Fingers crossed.
