Grumman Albatross HU-16/G111 Thread

So many good liveries to look forward to when painters can finally dig through the files!

This aircraft (H-16 with the modern Garmin…G-111?) is BEYOND fantastic, especially in VR. However, my only issues is that the autopilot does not seem to work. It will not track heading, nav, VS, altitude, etc. as far as I can tell. Once that is fixed, I’m taking this thing on a months’ long trip around the world.

@TitanMiller2081 Thank you very much!

The G-111 autopilot issues (and several others) have all been fixed for the first update, which was submitted a week or so ago. As soon as that’s released it should be in good shape.

You can see the full list of fixes here: Grumman Albatross HU-16/G111 Thread - #78 by Ramasurinen

A second update is in the works.

Cheers!

I wanted to do a longer flight so decided to fly from Sasebo navy base in Japan down to Tsoying Naval Base in Taiwan for some reason. I flew along down the Ryukyu islands following VORs. Log book says I was flying for six and a half hours making this the longest flight I’ve ever done in a flight sim. :eyes:

Some pics of the flight

I filled up the fuel 100% and used up the float tanks and just over half the drop tanks. Flew just over 1,000 nautical miles. This thing has range. Now I’m thinking about taking this bird around the world. Never done that before, this plane seems like it’d be ideal for it: long range, ability to land and take off pretty much anywhere and it’s a joy to fly.

A few times during that flight I wished there was a second VOR indicator and a NAV2 radio. Actually an option to swap out that Garmin GNS for a plain radio stack would make this plane even more awesome, plus maybe an NDB/ADF and DME. Could swap out that Garmin backup digital attitude display for an extra gauge as well. And a pony or two in the back. That’d be my dream Albatross. No GPS at all and even more analogue goodness. But I’m still very happy with what we got already!

Some small bugs: the landing light tilt switches seem to be reversed. Pushing the switch down actually raises the light angle. Unless down means ‘retract’ or something I guess. This is on the HU-16 classic variant. Not actually tried out the G-111.
Also when you switch on the avionics from cold and dark the transponder is in the ALT state by defauit, probably should be in standby or even just off and you have to turn it on yourself.
And at some point I could no longer open or close the right engine cowl. Left worked fine. Was just flicking the switches with my mouse and not using any keyboard or controller commands.

I “upvote” this 100%.

I would also agree that having a no-GPS option would be fantastic for those seeking a more authentic experience, as if flying in the mid-20th century.

That’s wonderful that it’s going to be included in career mode. I didn’t think I would like career mode in 2024 but I am starting to enjoy it as it breaks the monotony of free-flight.

What’s funny to me… I made a pilgrimage to the Pima Air & Space Museum last April (strongly recommend!), and saw an Albatross there. I knew the Albatross was basically a bigger, longer-range Goose - a plane I enjoy flying in the sim - and thought to myself “gee, I wish we had one of these in the sim too”…

And then… BAM.

I want to add to the chorus, too: this is a REALLY REALLY well-crafted aircraft that’ s beyond enjoyable to fly. We now have the Albatross, the Goose, the Widgeon, and the freeware Duck (which I haven’t tried, but which looks pretty decent for freeware)… are we missing any other Grumman seaplanes?

We are missing the Mallard!

for some oddball reason I’d like to see and study a Turbine HU16 lol. Yep I’d love to see a Mallard. Grumman sure did a great job in aircraft production and great service to Amphib SAR/Anti Sub Operations. The only Nation currently I know with both active with Amphibs are Japan’s SDF.

I totally forgot about the Mallard! Yes, we need that too. And if you want to be a true completeist, the Tadpole, which was a one-off that Grumman didn’t pursue, but which was basically the prototype for the Colonial/Lake seaplanes.

A decent Catalina would be nice, too.

We have American, German, Italian, and French seaplanes but no British  Bring out the Shorts, Felixstowes, Supermarines, and Saunders-Roes!

I’m absolutely antsy waiting for MS to push the patch out for this thing.

Coming in the second update, by popular request…

It will be available as a preset, so either the glass bubble or radome versions can be used with any livery.

Cheers.

Did the first patch submitted not make it in today’s dev update? I didn’t see it in the release notes.

It doesn’t appear so, but I will inquire about it.

This is somewhat expected though. As I said before the testing team at MS has probably been extremely busy lately, dealing with much higher priority testing. A mostly working airplane will just have to wait a bit. Updates for first party planes all have to go through testing before release.

I’m sure it’ll come soon, now that the big first sim patch is out.

Cheers.

Hi everyone. Browsing through the patch notes I noticed this nice entry…

  • Fixed loading of DDS files used in legacy effects

Anyone who was experiencing missing wake / propeller wash effects etc during water landings (the little green wireframe squares), could you please let me know if you still see those problems with this new sim update?

If so can you please let me know whether you are running PC (MS Store or Steam) or Xbox X or S?

I have never been able to reproduce that bug unfortunately, either streaming or running locally, so any data would really help.

Thanks very much!
