Grumman Albatross HU-16/G111 Thread

You and me both. I think I’ll practically live in the thing.

To make myself feel better about the overall state of things, I’m thinking ahead, and I just might do a world tour in this. Once the simulator has been patched a few more times…

FS2024 has been incredibly stable for me even since launch. In the first week or so I had a number of CTDs, but only during load. The first couple patches seem to have fixed those but I did have one crash while changing aircraft in free flight. But as for flying and operating aircraft? Not a single problem for me on my hardware.

I’ve already made one 4-hour flight in FS2024 in the Albatross from Northern Sky’s Ketchikan (PAKT) to the sim’s native handcrafted KSEA. No problems at all. A round the world flight sounds like an amazingly fun thing to plan and fly. Of course, being a flying boat, I’d suggest a route that emphasizes coastlines and canals.

If you do get around to doing, please share you route and progress.

It’s more stable than it used to be, for sure. On a positive note, it’s been running smoothly as well. I set it to target 33% of my monitor’s refresh rate, or 55 FPS, and it seems that I can hit that target without a lot of trouble. I don’t really notice the dynamic quality setting reducing clarity either, so win-win for me.

I also haven’t done a proper flight yet, despite 27 hours of play time reported by Steam, so maybe I should do that at some point.

The bindings interface is the bane of my existence right now.

Ironically, while I’m having almost no issues in-sim with CTDs or other jankiness, I’m having repeated issues with closing a flight or the sim. It looks like, from mild experimentation, that if anything that uses SimConnect to inject things into the sim (for me, that’s ActiveSky and FSHud) is running when you close out, the system will just hang. It won’t crash - it will just… stop. Forever, or at least for tens of minutes (which is the maximum my patience allowed me to wait). But it also seems to hang at other times for no clear reason on exit. Not sure if anyone else has this issue…

That’s exactly why I haven’t bothered installing anything extra. I can’t be bothered experimenting with external software that isn’t compatible yet, and I don’t trust the sim enough to use compatible software yet.

I’ll just live with vanilla FS24 for the moment, and enjoy the Albatross. It’s a nice silver lining in all this mess.

Both ActiveSky and FSHud are compatible. But yeah, I see your viewpoint for sure. Sometimes the complex is the enemy of the usable, etc.

But much like LL Cool J can’t live without his radio, I can’t live without my realistic cloud and wind formations and proper ATC with traffic injection…

I’ve not been impressed personally by what I’ve seen of ActiveSky so I’ve never bothered. As for ATC and traffic, BATC is working well for me, so I’m set there. But I don’t use BATC during GA flying, which is most of my FS2024 time so far. Maybe that’s why I haven’t run into any of the long sim-closing times reported by others. My sim takes maybe 20 seconds to close after I click the confirmation dialog.

I had similar problem mixture or condition levers would go to 0 every so often. I looked at my keyboard settings and deleted all keyboard flight control inputs, haven’t re-encountered the problem yet.

I was hopeful the autopilot was going to get updated in the first update push. Looks like it wasn’t. Any updates?

The only update currently is “Keep waiting for MS to push the submitted fixes”, looks like.

I will note that it seems that the big patch that was pushed this week fixed a lot of the stuttering and frame rate issues I was having in the G1000 version.

An absolutely gorgeous little film was released a few days ago, following the actual G-111 the sim was based on (N51ZD) around Miami and the Bahamas.

Some of the aerial shots are pretty amazing. Music is quite fitting as well!

It’s an excerpt from a longer film: “Flying Boat”. It’s also the first time I’ve seen a night shot with all of the anchor lights actually working. Hmmm…

Enjoy!

I think what we really need is the Manx Air livery. Plane belongs to the (already very wealthy)guy behind the Meyers Manx reboot, has a great instagram of adventures in his Albatross.

Kinda wondered if it was the plane used to model but I guess not, he seems like someone who’s very cool with nerdy stuff like this. I mean the guy rebooted a classic beach buggy brand mostly just for funsies and flies around in an Albatross he flies himself instead of a biz jet.

Awesome, I understand the subtext of that statement!

In case anyone needed some more Albatross ■■■■(I probably wouldn’t recommend googling albatross ■■■■). More than a little jealous of that guys life, I want an Albatross and a beach buggy company… Because of his aviation obsession you can actually now get a Manx with a little 3 cylinder radial

Just did a lovely night flight from CYQQ to CYYJ in the G-111. Thanks so much!

@OldpondGL I thought I heard some big radials pass overhead… (YYJ is my home). Thanks, glad you’re enjoying it!

You’re in Victoria? Oh, wow, I am seriously jealous.

I was just flying the Albatross to the harbour!

That makes 3 of us in Victoria, my home as well.
