As everyone has commented and it looks like it’s unanimous this look over the ocean should stay in FS the way it is (especially with all the other work that needs to be done).
Found a better way to describe the look of this texture or whatever it is over the open ocean. When the sun is starting it’s evening sunset over the water this effect would look perfect in the North Pole or winter over the Great Lakes/Black Sea to name two. Any cold place in January not in warmer seas.
I have one more (Asobo stated they needed detail descriptions of what we are talking about):
Oil slick. Doing an evening flight into KPBI from TNCM I couldn’t help but think of a very bad Exon Valdez situation.
I think it’s difficult to imagine what you’re discussing about, without actual screenshots of what you’re seeing.
I was experiencing this oil slick thing you’re talking about BEFORE patch 5. It seems to have been reduced and/or removed with patch 5.
So you all aren’t seeing this obvious look over the ocean. Guess I’ll have to figure out how to take screenshots in the sim and figure out how to post them here. It’s very obvious and glaring…
I do find it interesting that a word or phrase can enter the collective consciousnesses
becoming thereafter the exemplum optimi of a whole class of things or events.
I think that it was the Exon Valdez that even managed to make an appearance in that
silly, Costner vehicle, Waterworld.
Addendum:
Forgive my aside.
windows key + G to bring up gamebar, you can easily take a capture from there.
Well I don’t know. Maybe I do see the same thing but I haven’t noticed. Maybe I’m not seeing the same thing as you at all. Maybe it’s because I’m flying at a different location than you.
I don’t know, because you haven’t shown me and all of us, what you’re actually seeing in the form of screenshot. That way we can compare with what we’re seeing to see if it matches what you’re seeing, and whether it’s a problem or not.
Don’t assume everyone is seeing the same thing as you do, since we all describe something differently, and other people may understand that message differently too. So I can’t be sure for certain on what you’re trying to describe based solely on a description rather than the actual image that you’re seeing.
You can use Windows Key + Print Screen button on your keyboard to take screenshots.
We talked about it in this thread: Cool Water Cracking
Its a thing, but I’d say that the occurrence of it is pretty complex IRL in a way that is hard to work well in a simulator of the entire plant. The ocean is pretty complex and that slick you see is pretty normal, just maybe not so noticeable in a lot of places especially far away from land.
Hmm… I might be seeing this as well, but I never really noticed it. I think it still looks acceptably normal.
If you look at some of these real life photos, the ‘oil slick’ illusion seems to be visible as well.
I love it. It is working. It is fairly authentic. maybe a little overdone, but I think it adds a lot to the ocean fidelity.
This looks like ■■■■ and I disagree with what your saying here. If this was moving in the sim you would be right but is a static bitmap that actually ruins the look of the water. Try doing an approach into TNCM around 1pm in the afternoon and tell me this looks realistic…
Its very much a real thing and intentional on Asobo’s part. Near shore areas have natural and artificial slicks of various degrees that are perhaps a little less less noticeable in real life and less intense the further away from shorelines and marine traffic.
It looks pretty good near the coast, but in the deep ocean it still appears but is less common unless there are plankton blooms or natural hydrocarbon seeps (these are not “spills”) as are common in places that have large seafloor hydrocarbon reserves.
Simulating it in MSFS is kind of hard to do right since you would basically have to do some kind of density layering with some kind of data set to determine exactly where it is likely to see it more prominently. I think it looks pretty good, its just a little too strong of an effect in places you wouldnt see it.
What do you disagree with?
Sorry I replied on your post. I disagree that it looks good commenting on what Opus7773889 said. You are correct in the real world this is there but not everywhere to this degree. Also it’s overly done in FS compared to the real world. In the real world this effect is not static, it moves. Although I understand what Asobo was trying to do but it’s way overdone in the sim.
Sorry but that’s how water looks IRL from a height?? Water IRL isn’t a flat uniform blue blanket. I find these abnormalcies very realistic.
Just read this, I get your point but I wouldn’t remove it tbh
in summary, it needs slight adjustment… not removal.
