Is it me or there is a performance issue on the GPU side since the last update?

Hello folks,

I have noticed an issue which I am not sure what is it exactly, for example whenever I start a flight, the FPS looks to be good, however after sometime, especially upon landing on third party airports, the fps will be drastically go down and the VRAM will be filled up. However if you start at the same airport as new flight, FPS will be on check. Has anybody noticed such as issue?

I from time to time have a drastic fps drop (45 to 5) during a flight, that is corrected if I remove ATC from the tool bar list at the top of the page. FPS goes right back up, and after a couple minutes I can put it back in the toolbar and it keeps working fine. Some odd thing going on there of course. You might try removing ATC next time it happens and see what you get?

Third party airports filling up your VRAM seems like normal behaviour. Especially when you start at a less detailed airport and/or a less populated area. Try comparing your fps and VRAM usage in other dense areas like the California Bay Area around Los Angeles and see how it goes.

Yeah I thought so as well. But what is weird is, if I try to resize the MSFS window to have it smaller and then full screen again, it will recover the vram and hence, the fps will drastically improved which makes me wonder, is MSFS now having some issues with the vram management?

I don’t think is related to the ATC, I really think is an issue from the vram management

The question here becomes where you got those 3rd party airports from.

If you bought them from the MSFS Marketplace or from a reputable 3rd party dev (like Orbx), they shouldn’t cause much of an issue.

But if you’re downloading free scenery and airport packs from various sites, then that’s likely your problem. A very high number of those (not all, but a majority) are straight Google Maps rips. They contain hundreds of thousands of objects, entities, textures, etc that are not optimized at all and will cause all forms of performance issues. Sometimes they’ll even cause CTD.

These scenery packs are typically produced by 15 year old Timmy who has no technical knowledge but decided he wanted his hometown airport in game after watching a quick YouTube tutorial on how to import Google stuff into MSFS, then shared it via one of these add-on sites.

Lol I absolutely agree with you! These Google maps rip off seem to cause some issues anyways .
Actually these third party airports are respected. But I just remembered that, I might have some google maps scenery around airport that I downloaded from flightsim.to. Let me try to remove and test it again.

That could cause it.

Just to be clear, I’m not hating on 3rd party freeware stuff. There’s some good quality, hand-crafted stuff on flightsom.to and other sites. There’s one guy that’s done a bunch of work adding Toronto area landmarks that are hand-made and awesome. Some people that do rip Google stuff actually know how to properly optimize their stuff after ripping the data. But much of it is just kiddies that watched a video and decided they wanted to do their city so they could fly over their house and then posted it to these sites.

Tested. Indeed, removing the google maps scenery does help, however the the FPS drop issue still happens though. I think it seems to happen in Aerosoft EDDK scenery and I think I saw it as well sometimes with EDDT from Gaya sim

In fairness, those are pretty busy airports. It’s not unusual for serious frame rate drops. Try without the 3rd party airport scenery and you’ll likely see a huge drop as well. Maybe not as severe, but it will be a noticeable degradation in performance.

I see that all the time with KJFK and KLAX as well. I’m cruising around at 35-40 fps and once I get in range of those airports, I’m down to 20 fps. Sometimes less if it’s really busy and I have multiplayer enabled (which I don’t most of the time for that reason).

Yeah true, I’d say, let’s wait for tomorrow update and see if the CPU optimization help on this (not sure how it help on the GPU limited scenario) but let’s see. Thanks for the help anyway!

It won’t help with GPU limited folks unfortunately. Assuming they do have that in the update (they didn’t the last 2 updates and were supposed to) and assuming it works as intended, the only people who will benefit are people who have higher end GPUs (2070 and up) that are heavily underutilized due to main thread limiting.

So if they’re successful, I should see an uplift in overall performance, but I’ll see myself then GPU limited by my 2080 instead of being held back by my Ryzen 2700X.

I have RTX2080 with i9-9900k and most times I am CPU limited (running on 2k not 4k), only and only these times I land on selected third party airports where I became GPU limited.
But I am excited for tomorrow’s optimizations but let’s see if they do what promised

So assuming they do include it and it works, we should find ourselves both enjoying CPU performance increases then. Our CPUs are roughly the same performance level, with yours being a touch faster in single core performance.

I have experienced the same issue after latest update, however I managed to fix this performance drop by changing few settings in the Nvidia Control Panel.

Thanks for the tip. Actually I had this off already in regards to AA. Honestly at this point I have no idea what is the issue and it seems to me not so many folks have it though

Have you already tried this out 1.9.5 and .4 have the best image quality and AA, EVER!

thanks for the tip, I will give it a try! Perhaps it might help

So in order to replicate this issue, you may need to follow these steps:

  1. Start normally at any gate at EDDF, at this point the FPS will be pretty normal and good, no stutter or whatsoever.
  2. Use the teleport function in developer mode to go to another airport, enter let’s say EDDK, now you will teleported to EDDK, wait for while until new autogen has been loaded for EDDK.
  3. Now using the same teleport function, enter EDDF, now you will teleported back to EDDF, wait for while until EDDF autogen has been loaded.
  4. At this point the FPS should sink, the same phenomena is applicable to other airports but the severity differs. The same idea when you land at the airport coming from somewhere else which explains the fps drop after landing and taxi

Can someone please do me a favor and follow these steps to replicate the issue? If is replicable at your end as well, then clearly we should voting/sending Zendesks until this issue has been fixed! Actually this issue has started after the Japan update but it got worse after the latest update, not to mention the new stutters.

Some screenshots:
EDDF, upon spawning the airport, good performance:

EDDF, after replicating the issue by teleporting, low performance

Something is certainly wrong.Having only upgraded to the PM Deluxe version over a week I am disappointed. I am noticing a dip when I go to this terminal.
Optimization issue happening at the other airports like Paris.Has not been fixed yet!
