It seems the key word for Microsobo's FS24 release is "Underestimated."

  • They underestimated the number of people who wanted to download the new sim on November 19th.

  • They underestimated the number of bugs the ‘Unofficial Beta testers’ (i.e. people who bought the product) would quickly report.

  • They underestimated the problems that many people would have with the streaming model - so much so that they are starting to capitulate to the request for (at least some) permanently downloadable assets.

  • They underestimated the VRAM requirements.

  • They underestimated how vehemently many in the FS community would react to what seems like a rushed release of a partly sorted product.

I believe that most of the problems we are having will be fixed. But IMHO, the bottom line is that many of those problems should have been found and addressed in an extended Beta release, and fixed before a February 2025 release at the earliest.

Replace “underestimated” with “knew”

I’ve been a paid beta tester for many years, I started with the Intellivision.
Why doesn’t Asobo ask people like me to help during alpha or beta testing?
I would do it for free without any problem…

Not sure that’s a capitulation. It was supposed to be a feature but didn’t make it into the release.

Obviously we don’t know if it was pulled or just delayed, because they don’t tell us anything.

Edit: I got a message saying I had to edit this post to unhide it. What’s the point of automatically redacting choice language if it still apparently causes offence?

Fun word game, ok I will play along:

Complexity of Careers. Why not just leave it at flight lessons? Why introduce economy?

Digital Twin: Enough said?

Interdependencies of all manner. The silo/teams thing. Big miss there it would appear!

Knowledge about how aviation really works/fails in reality. They simply don’t know, do they?

User wrath vs corporate discomfort missing the launch date KPI. Sometimes it is better to fall on one’s sword and miss a milestone, even a real big one?

If you have deadlines to meet, theres just no time to fix the issues.
I still think Jorg is a great guy managing the franchise, with lots of passion and an open ear for the users. I still think the guys at Asobo do a great job, and the other teams they took on board for this development too, they are prolly the best you can have for each task, no doubt.

But i guess when theres a set timeline, by someone not involved with the development (Microsoft Corporates?), then you can only do so much…

The sim would have been better off to just release at a later date, or atleast with the focues on the sim/world as a baseline, and THEN focus on adding all the features, that are mostly half baked and just not finished because the time for developing and proper testing, was just too short…

Less is more, sometimes…

The underestimation of hubris is a worldwide phenomena in many spheres of human affairs today; leaders the world over are making big moves with many downstream consequences for those whom they lead. We are avid survivor viewers here, near the end of the game players want to make big moves to earn cred with the jury and their vote for a million bucks. Not all big moves go as planned. There are unintended consequences that cost them the big prize!

ok but… Freelook with mouse causes controls to freeze after SU5 - Bug Reporting Hub / Hardware & Peripherals - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

It has become part of the journey. 2020 still exists. Choose your path… :relieved:

I respect your right to have that opinion. But it seems akin to accepting that every commute on our modern highways will result in being involved in a myriad of minor accidents along the way, no matter how carefully we might drive. So we might as well stay home, or take the back roads to work.

It’s not a matter of acceptance, it just is. The awful launch will have had a financial hit and I couldn’t enjoy it for the first 3 days.

For the last week, it’s been hugely enjoyable, so I’ll choose that over walking away or sweating over the events of 10 days ago.

While I’d agree about the rest, what was wrong with RAM requirements? I have 32Gb and the sim together with everything else has never used more than 50%.

I probably should have restricted that comment to VRAM, since it’s become pretty apparent that many users with 8GB VRAM are suffering from DX12 forcing Windows to use Shared RAM.

In fact, I’m going to edit my original post. Thanks.

I’m always glad to hear that some are beginning to love the new sim.
I’m certainly not walking away from it. It seems like some are being forced into a step backward to FS20, though. It also seems that you acknowledge that.

And maybe you aren’t experiencing the myriad of reported bugs. That’s great too!

I would use a different word, but I would violate the Code of Conduct (again).

Totally. It was the worst* software launch I’ve seen in 35 years.

(* with the exception of ‘The Day Before’ because that was a scam and ‘Concord’ because its poor reception killed it totally).

The criticism is legitimate and people are valid for still feeling that.

But I’m moving on now with enjoying it, rightly or wrongly.

There is a broad spectrum of responses to the current (and past 10 days) user experiences.

This topic was merely an observation. We each have our own action plans - hopefully one that leads to enjoyment.

i think they were victims of their own success, plain and simple
and that’s as old as humanity itself
after 2020, they slept wearing the crown and hugging the world cup

they forgot that you always need to up your game in some way… always

Am I misremembering? Wasn’t the launch set back a couple times? Wasn’t it supposed to come out in July then September?

These deadlines were set by a corporation. It’s not as if the world was coming to an end if Microsoft didn’t release this simulator. It wasn’t as if people would die, or starve, or go homeless if Microsoft didn’t release this simulator. It wasn’t as if world leaders were going to slap sanctions on a country or countries if Microsoft didn’t release this simulator. The deadline could’ve been delayed until the product was better tested and polished for release.

And on the note of testing: One month to allow developers access to this complex software? One month? For the thousands of planes, airports, weather, vessels, etc? This was another corporate deadline that could’ve been moved because it’s not as if the world was coming to an end if Microsoft didn’t release this simulator. It wasn’t as if people would die…
