Been eternally frustrated by this new sim, because my performance is all over the map. It’s usually pretty good at game launch, then goes to the toilet. I’ve tried watching what I can, and popped up the Nvidia app tonight, noticed it tracked wattage. And voila! I saw something. When game loads, the gpu wattage for the opening video clips is parked at 300w. When game loads to world menu for free flight, 280ish. Load into an airport, 280ish, 40fps, then the voltage gradually sinks and settles to about 110-150w, and the frames tank with it. 3-7fps and never recover. Go back to world map, frames still low, voltage 110w. Only easy to kick it again is restart the sim and do it all over again. It’s really starting to irk me.
What is anything has for the voltage wonky? I’ve reinstating. (clean) the latest driver, reinstalled the sim, reinstalled the Nvidia app, which still says it is unable to optimize fs2024. I’m so for retreating to 2020, but ■■■■■■ Jim! I paid a lot of money for this!
Ultra songs as suggested by sim, 4k. Issue persists at high and medium, even at 1440.
Power (Watt) consumption go’s up when the graphics card has a lot to do.
On a stationair picture the wattage is low, when flying or taxi in a dynamic scenery the wattage is high. That is the normal response of the power consumption of a video card.
When there is something in the software or hardware that blocks the supply of data to the card or when the card gets overheated then the wattage go’s down.
It can be the network bandwidth, the CPU, 3d party software or the Sim itself that lowering the supply of data to the graphics card.
Not sure why NVIDIA app is unable to optimize MSFS-2024. Are you using the latest version of the NVIDA app? The previous version didn’t work with MSFS-2024 for many users. In other words do not reinstall the app if it is a previous version. Delete the the previous version, then download the current version and then install.
Voltage stays consistent as well, 1.075v. But there is correlation between fps and voltage, that much is clear, and I did move camera to exterior and interior as well as around trying to check exactly that, made no difference. It’s as if once the sim parks it in a low power state , it can’t recover it.
If the voltage to the GPU is varying, you have a serious problem with your hardware.
When you see wattage (Volts x Amps = Watts) changing, you’re seeing the amperage change as the card uses more or less power, which, as explained above, is directly related to the amount of data being processed.
The lowered GPU power draw you’re seeing is the result of your FPS being lowered by some other issue.
Fs2024 is only place I see this behavior. (fps cratering), I plan on launching fs2020 player today to verify watts on it. But, with respect to voltage, no, not varying, pretty solid at 1.075.
Possibly, although it doesn’t tally much with what task manager shows from my experience. It could be the sim misreporting VRAM usage. I upgraded to a 7900xt, then saw system memory shoot through the roof, so now I’m on 64gig. It’s just voodoo at this point, only the devs can solve.
Yeah, can’t get a hold of a 4090 at any reasonable price anyhow, 5090 looks too be priced well or if the realm of reality, and my finances are tight now anyhow, so 5080 is also just not in the cards when it eventually is made available. So 4080 and I are just going to have to get along for a while anyhow, I was more hoping it was a some sort of setting I had overlooked. I have system using high performance (turbo) power profile. So don’t think that is it. I keep hearing that having the Nvidia app optimize the game can reset things, but it’s just refusing to do so. Again, more and more frustrated and disillusioned. And if it is the sims fault then maybe this will assist in raising awareness.
I have a 3090 Ti 24GB, which is roughly equivalent to a 4070 Super.
I believe I found that the nVidia App was resetting my in-sim graphics options. Some of them were being reset every time I restarted the sim. Uninstalling the nVidia App fixed that problem.
I am not having the VRAM issue others are, and my FPS is very stable (around 50 FPS at a gate, and 70 FPS at altitude, with a mix of Ultra / High settings, TLOD=175, OLOD=145, and DLSS Quality.) I could use DLSS DLAA, but the slight uptick in visual quality isn’t worth the performance hit. DLSS Quality upscales 2K to 4K quite nicely, IMHO.
Activate Developer Mode, enter a flight, enable Debug → Display FPS, check what’s limiting your performance; ideally this should keep flickering between different names - if it’s stuck on one, you have your culprit
The intro video and menu for some reason are sucking up power like crazy (unlimited FPS? certainly they don’t adhere to any limit I set), it’s a bug but who knows when/if it’ll be fixed
I’ve also had some silly hiccups in FS24, but from your captures I can’t see any reason other than the driver screwing up. Though at least in my case the VRAM bug was being visible in the devtool, if it can be hidden then who knows
No worries, thanks though. Yeah, so wattage seems to be related to vram usage. Ugggh… And just saw from the rtx5 leaks there’s no added fan to 5080, yet the 5090 goes to 32gb. I don’t get it…
