Well, I was going to post that my 4c with tobii experience and the latest drivers still weren’t working for MSFS (WStore version)…
I just removed FaceTrackNoIR, Open Track, AItracker (which has nothing to do with the tobii 4c but whatever), and what do you know: head and eye tracking in the hangar menu, just like that.
HUH.
Anyway, as everybody has said: need a few settings, at least to adjust head/eye relative sensitivity, max rotation angles… and definitely xyz tracking to reaaaaaally get into them gauges.
I had an initial problem getting the app to download when I first plugged the unit in while already running… but I rebooted my system with it plugged in and windows store automatically started the download. Then, no prob.
Just to put my 2 cents in since it appears threads moved since SU7
I have both TrackIR and Tobii - I’ve installed the latest update for the tobii drivers. I also have installed FaceTrackNoIr and the plugin for it for tobii.
I have been using Facetracknoir with the tobii plugin for MSFS2020 for a long while now (8+ months or so) This gives full 6 dof just like trackIR but I don’t have to have a hat on, or my headphones with the sender. so I like running with Facetracknoir.
Since SU7 and all this stuff installed at the same time, MSFS did not work natively with tobii it seemed. I did not want to uninstall anything or reconfigure since I’ve got other titles I still use facetracknoir and tobii with. To get MSFS2020 to recongize the tobii by its self I had to launch MSFS2020 with TrackIR again, turn it on, then off via the toggle from the camera options and presto - tobii picked up and started working.
I have found that I can still use trackIR (if software is on and I launch MSFS2020 with just this running. Or native Tobii if I just launch MSFS2020 and nothing else… OR use Facetracknoir with Tobii still, if I launch this and use it with MSFS2020. I DID NOT HAVE TO UNINSTALL ANYTHING! I’m sorry for those that have.
Now on to my feedback.
Tobii, MS and Asobo - you can do better. This is a poor implementation as it is right now. 3 dof only and no way to configure it for sensitivities… I’ll consider this a good start but its inferior to TrackIR or Facetracknoir right now.
Here is what we still need from Tobii;
Please work with Microsoft/Asobo and have them add a separate “Tobii” toggle like we have for TrackIR in the camera options in game.
We REALLY need the ability to customize sensitivities and curves.
we should be able to have the ability to use 6DOF
Right now 5$ software makes tobii work better than native support in MSFS2020 with your product.
aah thanks. TBH as this is all new to me I’m really happy how it works out of the box, so happy to wait for the inevitable ( ) enhancements from Asobo. Really feel i’m only missing the zoom in ability when I lean in.
So I’ve been running Tobii natively for the past few days and as a first pass, I’m actually quite satisfied. I think one of the biggest adjustments for anyone coming from Track IR is with the eye tracking. I’m starting to get used to this now and finding it quite natural with a couple of exceptions.
Approaching the threshold on landing and may glance off to the side looking at the airport or similar but when looking back straight ahead to land, the camera view is moving back to centre which is a little disorientating.
Glancing away from the monitor to a side tablet, controller or streamdeck and back causes the camera view to shift even though my head is still straight ahead.
For the above two cases, I would like the ability disable eye tracking or even better to toggle it independently from head tracking.
The missing x,y & z axis need to be added but even without them, I have now switched to Tobii permanently as head rotation is the main benefit to me. The ability to lift your head over the front of the aircraft when landing or leaning forward to see instruments closer but via head tracking is welcome so I look forward to that support coming in a future update but in the meantime I have plenty of work arounds for those scenarios.
With regards to Tobii via FaceTrackNoIR to get the full 6 dof, I tried that earlier in the year but ended up selling the Tobii and going back to Track IR as mentioned previously, it was either way too jittery or if you smoothed it out in the filter then it was far too laggy. This new native implementation is way better imho even with its current lack of full axis or customisation.
With regards to the zoom functionality, I have buttons mapped to toggle head tracking as well as Instrument view and next instrument. If I need to get up close to the instruments to make adjustments, I just toggle head tracking off to keep things steady (although not necessary), then switch to instrument view and cycle through to the instrument I want.
I also have a button mapped to reset cockpit view so I can tap that and be back in the normal cockpit view again. All works really well once you are familiar with the options. Perhaps not as natural as leaning in for a quick glance but great when you want to make adjustments.
very similar to my setup. I have a button on my Bravo yoke that zooms in and another to zoom out. So I click a button to disable tracking, zoom in and use hat switch to adjust as needed. Another button resets to cockpit centred, then I toggle tracking back on. Seems a lot, but easy once you’re use to it, so I’m really happy with the tracking setup I have (1 day owner!!).
So I was able to play a little bit with repositioning the Tobii bar forward with a temporary clamp as the image below hints at (I’ve not permanently attached anything yet):
I had to lie a bit in the configuration about the size and location when calibrating the monitor, but I just approximated it’s location based on visual alignment. Playing with this a bit more might yield better results. But for the moment, by moving it forward from the monitor to the top of my Logitech devices, it’s definitely picking up my head movement better, but also the eye tracking has improved… making it even more jittery than before. So a win, but a loss. If I could just disable eye tracking and leave head tracking on… I’m sure it would settle down and be more useful.
Might just have to wait for MSFS (or Tobii) to add config and sensitivity adjustments.
Ordered the Tobii 5 for Black Friday. Super easy set up, using the Tobii Experience to control it. The eye tracking in addition to the head tracking is a bit of a trip. Remembering to hold my head still and just glance at stuff it I need smaller motions takes conscious thought still. But it changes my flying for the better. I look forward to flying with it more.
Yep I still try it in airliners from time to time but it’s too sensitive with the eyetracking. It’s nearly impossible to turn knobs without zooming in. So yes it makes flying better but I really look forward to the setting options which are definitely needed.
