Same here.
Even when MSFS closes normally, starting again the sim same.message appears .
Frustrating!!!

Agreed that the user-base should not have to forum surf to solve this problem.

Having xbox app is as intuitive as it can be. You buy on steam you must have steam, you buy on ms store you must have xbox app. Obvious.

Really? Before this latest update the XBox app was never required for any updates for this sim. Therefore, how is it obvious this is suddenly needed now for SU6?

Actually is more weird you can play it without xbox app since all the MS games require it. It’s beyond my understanding how people forgot to install xbox app. Hard to imagine launching games from a desktop shortcut like in 2000.

You’ve clearly got to be joking. All apps on Windows you launch either via a shortcut on your desktop or via the Start Menu. Same goes for Linux (gui) and Mac. No one needed the XBox app prior (for a year) until WU6 and it was not communicated to the community that it would be required going forward. How you think people should’ve somehow known to have the Xbox app installed is beyond my understanding. The sim wasn’t even available on XBox until just recently.

It was available on xbox app since day one. I’m talking about games not apps.
Its hard to imagine how anybody that uses a desktop PC on a daily basis for anything other than games could possibly think shortcuts are a thing of the past. Pcs are not games consoles.

I think this is where this difference of opinion on what is obvious and what is not is playing in here. I am not a gamer and never have been. MSFS 2020 is the first “game” I have had on a PC since 2005. I have never installed Xbox app on my PC as I have never had a need to. Didn’t even know of its existence until now. For past 1 year and 1 month approximately, all MSFS 2020 installations and updates have not required this Xbox app thing, that is until now with WU6. Moreover this change in requirement was not communicated with WU6. Those that are claiming that having Xbox app installed is obvious or are taking it for granted are clearly coming from a more gaming oriented background I suspect…

This worked for me. Just make sure to close all the applications.
Thank you so much for this solution, it was the really the only thing that managed to work. I installed the xbox app and then opened the microsoft app and it automatically just started updating on its own. I literally tried everything before this lol. So frustrating!!

I tried all the suggestions here, including installing the XBox app, and it still showed no update for MSFS. But one I restarted the PC (Make sure you choose restart and not shutdown since fastboot is probably enabled (default)), that fixed the issue for me. Went back into store after the restart and MSFS started updating.

All the previous methods did not work for me, until I connected to the US network proxy through the router’s V2ray network, and then the store update appeared.
Same issue here now the second time.
No pending updates can be found neither in Windows Update or in MS Store, both are telling I am up to date, but MSFS is insisting on an existing mandatory update and not willing to start cause of this.
I solved it both times by uninstalling it then again install it from Microsoft Store.
After this I had to wait until it had again downloaded the whole one hundred something GB, which took ages and is ridicolous. Nothing I prefer to do every second time when I want to play the simulator.

The proposed solution worked. It required the XBOX app installed and running, for Microsoft Store to see the new mandatory update.
Before resetting windows game services dl-bar went left-right like K.I.T.T.-car’s red front lights, and after the reset i get only this. So there is no way to install this hotfix anymore. And yes xbox app is installed.
Just uninstalled the game, and it won’t install again. Showing “error” on the download bar. Well, it was fun as long it lasted, i guess.
Just made an account here to say thank you, it worked. I can play one of my favourite games again!
