Microprose B-17

Just me I think. I was heartbroken watching the latest video.

The addon looks visually fantastic, but apparently will sound like a single engine aircraft of the era. I’ll probably still buy it though.

It’s clearly stated as work in progress. I think they will tweak sound balancing before release. Seeing as they recorded from Sentimental Journey, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until they get to a release candidate.

Microprose is a gaming developer and has been making games for computers for about 30 years. They made quite a few flying sims. Just Google them. Here is the latest on their B17 for 2020 and 2024, but no mention, AFAIK, for Xbox. MicroProse showcases B-17 Flying Fortress in new MSFS preview video - MSFS Addons

My understanding is this is a whole new thing. Someone bought the name I think? Therefore completely unrelated to anything in the past.

It looks like it is the original company, as its logo appears on the screenshots. I own their Falcon flight simulator. An update on the MicroProse B-17G for Microsoft Flight Simulator - MSFS Addons

when a company is bought out, the buyer tries to acquire all the branding and badges as well as whatever other holdings and properties that company held. They do it for just the reason you have illustrated. They want the consumer familiar with the brand to be either unaware of the changes or to assume at least some of the original staff or talent is still involved in the work. It always works because most people don’t follow the business side of things - they just buy the products.

Not the original guys that did the viper etc games but still is shaping up well for the b17 atm they have no access to marketplace so no way to get it to Xbox they are trying there hardest to sort this asap so Xbox users can get it

From the original owners, Microprose has gone through a few owners and is now owned by an Australian simulation software entrepreneur called David Lagettie.

the proofing will be done when they have a flyable product. So far I like what I see and the engagement on this board and in their official media seems to be focused. As with ‘Rise of Flight’ and their release of the Fokker Dr1 model into FSX as a promotional move, this plan to place their B-17 into MS Flight sims is well considered. I don’t know if I want a full B-17 bombing simulator with manageable crew and scored mission objectives, but I do like the idea of seeing and test driving their model before deciding on whether to purchase their full product.

I hope it pans out for them and for us. So far the artwork looks pretty darn good to my eyes

I wonder if it could possibly being lined up to coincide with multicrew.
Now that would be cool

Preview coming by TwoToneMurphy tomorrow, and early access begins October 9th!

Sigh… early access after all this time hyping? No thanks, I’ll wait until full release.

For real. I am so tired of early access.

Same here. Long time ago I decided not to buy early access releases.

The last one I bought was MSFS 2024, but it was not labelled as such :grimacing:

I get it. You’re completely right FS24 was released in early access while marketed as a finished product. But unlike MS/Asobo, Microprose is being transparent here. They keep reminding us it’s not a finished product. They weren’t even planning to do early access, but seeing as this is their first FS24 product, they thought it would be prudent to do so to get direct feedback as they finish development. And if you’re not into that, that’s ok.

I’ll be honest, I’m not usually big into early access myself. I didn’t get Blackbird’s C-130 or A2A’s Aerostar, but those examples seem to be progressing well. Of course, Microprose is an unknown quantity in FS20/24 so it’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison. This is where personal preference comes into play for me. The B-17 is my favorite aircraft of all time. I only discovered A2A’s B-17 (the gold standard) months before FS2020 came out, and once I got a taste of FS2020 it was near impossible to go back. So I have been waiting 5 years for the B-17 to come to FS2020/24. The likelihood of seeing another B-17 come to market is low in the current environment, so I have a vested interest in seeing this succeed. And if I can be a part of it, however small, then it’s a no-brainer for me. I’m not trying to convince anyone, just sharing my passion for this bird.

I struggle to find the functional difference between ‘Early Access’ and ‘Release & Patch’

Pretty much all software will require some kind of additional development once it’s in the hands of users just due to the shear number of possible hardware configurations. It’s nearly impossible to test for all circumstances.

At least early access releases are being transparent about the process. Some developers take advantage of this and leave it in a perpetual state of disrepair, and some fully release products and never come back to fix anything.

It’s really about the integrity of the developer. I do like when a good dev releases in early access with a discount for the hassle.

Early Access often implies some or much functionality left to be implemented. Product is still in growth phase

Release & Patch would imply all functionals are there but not necessarily…erm..functional- unforeseen errors or conflicts that aren’t apparent until the product is in the hands of a wider audience/ wider variety of hardware configurations.

Patching is more (or should be) repair/sustainment as opposed to continuing development

It may be pedantic, but I see a difference between the two models, and to be fair I don’t mind Early Access, even with slow progression

yes but - we all expect that ‘release and patch’ is a given with every new product. Trying to create space between that and ‘early access’ is just superfluous, it’s marketing not strategy.

Many people like to test products they paid for. So many participants in every MSFS beta. And I’m sure there are enough to do early access testing for the B-17.

And I’m happy they do. Everyone else, including me, is not forced to buy the product until it’s out of early access.

TwoToneMurphy is giving this thing an early look at the B-17 right now on his channel. And from what I see, Micropose went nuts with the detailing. Looks GREAT.

They also explained to him what their plan was with the early access stuff. They plan on taking suggestions and improvements not only forward with the B-17, but other planes they are working on.
